Introduction
Street markets are a representation of a country in terms of merchandise sold. In street markets the food available is a representation of what the majority of Malaysian community eat.
This booklet aims to explore the different markets in Kuala Lumpur.
The concepts that will be investigated in this booklet are the contrasts in the different foods served in different streets in Kuala Lumpur. It is important to note in order to make a market function it need people. But without the attractions of the market there will be no market.
In addition , it is evident that the street markets are in a linear formation. So as to give people the leeway to vie and purchase from several stalls.

Petaling Street
Petaling Street (China town) is a
street market that sells a variety of
goods ranging from foods to accessories. It is in the heart of
Kuala Lumpur
Petaling Street is 2 minutes away from the Pasar Seni LRT
station and a 5 minutes from the
train station.

There all kinds of people found at
Petaling street. Many tourists from a range of countries are seen
enjoying the amenities available.
Although it is naturally expected
that the store owners are predominately Chinese, this is not the case in Petaling Street. Here, store
owners can be Malay, Tamil or Indian as well.
Goods sold in Petaling street
include clothing, accessories suitcases and foods to name a
few

The street has fruit
carts located at the end of every street.
There are abundant local fruits
available but some fruits
are imported
Both western and eastern deserts are served to
cater for the diverse range of
ethnicities that visit Petaling street.

Walnuts are freshly roasted where the mouth watering smell wafts the street

In China Town one of
the food items
available are chicken, duck and Chinese
sausages.
The duck is usually
suspended from a hook. The chicken de-boned and hung.

There are a variety of
different food ranging from
porridge, meats to
buns available.

Little India
Little India is an area in brickfield. It has its name due to the fact
that it is primarily where many Indian
people live such that it is known as little
India
Little India is a 3 minute walk away
from the Masjid Jamek stop on the
LRT

In little India a variety of good are available. There are predominately Indian goods such as Indian clothing i.e
Sari’s, Indian accessories and Indian dishes.
In Little India there are a variety of food
stalls not only serving Indian food but also serving Malaysian
cuisine.
The people around the area are of Malay
and Indian backgrounds.
A variety of different curries are served on
the street.

The food is mostly of south Indian origins but you can still find influences from Malaysia,
Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
Deep into the heart of brickfield, snacks are
also sold on the street. One of these items is
known as Chukri (Gujaratee term)
In addition to snacks being sold, milkshake lassi is sold as well.

Central Market
Central market is located in Pasar Seni. It is a 2 minute walk from the Pasar Seni LRT and a 3 minute walk from the Kuala
Lumpur KTM.
The central market is next to the Kasturi walk and is a street away from Petaling
street

The Central Market has different lanes that sell items from different locations Each lane has different items which are sold that represent the culture of its location.

The central market is arranged in a linear formation. On the sides a variety
of foods are sold. Some of which a sweets others need to be fried and
prepared at home.

In the Central Market there are several different cuisines available ranging from Thai food to Indonesian food.
On the right is a prawn tom yam served with rice.

Kasturi Walk
Kasturi Walk is located in Pasar Seni. It is a 2 minute walk from the Pasar Seni LRT and a 3 minute walk from the Kuala
Lumpur KTM
Kasturi walk sells a variety of goods such as clothing, jewelry,
crafts and food.

Fresh snacks are made on demand in the stall in the Kasturi Walk.
In addition to snacks, beverages with sagu (jelly) are added to give more
flavor and texture.
