Business Connectivity Services (BCS)
• SharePoint 2007 brought us BDC (Business Data Connectivity)
• Designed as an integration feature to surface data from line-of-business systems
• Intended to require minimal coding effort• Intended to require minimal coding effort• Tools to create metadata model were slow in
coming and process was painful
BCS (cont…)
• SharePoint 2010 introduces Business Connectivity Sources (BCS)
• Builds on concepts introduced in SharePoint 2007
• Allows for connectivity to a larger set of • Allows for connectivity to a larger set of content sources
• Provides opportunity for interactive connectivity to data vs. read-only
BCS Architecture Overview

5
Components of BCS
• BDC Metadata
• BDC Server Runtime
• Security• Solution Packaging
• Out of Box UI
• BDC Client Runtime
• Design Tools
Setting up BCS with SQL source
1. Ensure appropriate rights and services in SharePoint
2. Create underlying stored procedure in SQL to serve data
3. Create external content type to represent data4. Verify the external content type5. Verify the data connection6. Use a Business Data List web part to show the
external data in SharePoint
Considerations for BCS
• Can require some level of development effort• Depending on type of data served, can create
a code base to be maintained• Workflows cannot be configured on external
listslists• Cannot export to Excel from external lists• Datasheet view not supported in external lists

Collaboration and Social Networking
SharePoint 2010 builds upon the social tools initially introduced in 2007– Expanded My Sites leveraged as hub– Increased social interactions through status updates,
social linkingg– Crowdsourcing through links and tags
Collaboration and Social Networking
Foster controlled internal social networking:Granular security and disclosure
Collaboration and Social Networking
Allow users to find intrinsic knowledge in the firm

7
My Sites
Improved Profile:Central point of reference for all things about you
My Sites
• Internal Social Networking– Colleagues/Org Chart– Status– Likes/Tags
• Personal internal online storage• Personal, internal online storage– Documents, Photos, Tasks, etc.– Collaboration Sites
Considerations with My Sites
• User Support– Who is going to assist users?
• Configure storage quotas– Default 100MB
A hit t• Architecture– Use dedicated content databases

8
Considerations with My Sites (cont’d)
• Maintenance and Backup• Governance
– How are you going to monitor and control content and usage?
• Recommend locking down My Site to pushed datag y p• Limit features available and customizability by users• Promote social interaction
Workflow
Three types of workflow– SharePoint out-of-the-box – Simple, two to three
state workflows– SharePoint Designer – Built from predetermined
workflow activities in SharePoint designer. – Fully Custom – Compiled .Net code leveraging
Windows Workflow Foundation
What type of workflow?
Workflow Usage Potential Scenario
Native SharePoint Common business Document approval, vacation requests• Bill creates document and Hank
needs to approve the document before it’s available in SharePointSharePoint
SharePoint Designer More complex than simple approvals but need to be built by non-developer staff
Logic based approvals • If field A contains 1, then Bob
approves, otherwise, Janet approves
Custom Coded Need to integrate with otherline of business applications
Matter IntakeCheck Requisition

Workflow Architecture
SharePoint 2010 leverages Windows Workflow Foundation– Windows Workflow Foundation leveraged through
SharePoint Workflow Services– Scheduler can monitor lists, triggering workflows , gg g
based on field values
Windows Workflow Foundation
Enterprise Search
• Two primary options available: SharePoint Server Search and FAST Search for SharePoint
• SharePoint Server Search available with SharePoint Server CALs, FAST requires additional CALsadditional CALs
• Decision must be made about what investment will be made in search and importance of search within firm

10
Why Search for Collaboration?
• Easy and comprehensive access to expertise information
• No need to search or know all silos of information across firm
• Unified search experience for users• Unified search experience for users
SharePoint Server Search• Best bets• Federated search• Metadata-driven refinement• People and expertise search
SharePoint Enterprise w/ FAST
• Advanced content processing• Advanced sorting• Contextual search• Deep refinement
Standard vs. FAST
• People and expertise search • Query suggestions• Relevancy tuning• Search scopes
• Deep refinement• Extreme scale search• Thumbnails and previews• Tunable relevance with
multiple rank profiles
FAST Components

SharePoint/FAST Architecture
Scaling With FAST
Considerations for FAST
• If you have an existing search product, switching to FAST will not be a magic bullet
• Hardware requirements• Skill level and abilities of administrators
E f ll d h Sh P • Experience not fully integrated with SharePoint 2010
• Relatively low licensing costs make it an attractive option
