Collaborative Learning
What is Collaborative Learning?
Collaborative learning is a method of teaching and learning in which students team together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a project.

Collaborative Learning
It's advantages/benefits
Celebration of diversity
Acknowledgment of individual differences
Interpersonal development
Actively involving students in learning
More opportunities for personal feedback
Collaborative Learning Strategies THINK-PAIR-SHARE
(1) The instructor poses a question, and gives students about a minute to think through an appropriate response. (2) Students then turn to a partner and share their responses. (3) Student responses can be shared within a larger group or with an entire class during a follow-up discussion. All students have an opportunity to learn by reflection and by verbalization.
Collaborative Learning
The objectives and goals using CL
develop and share a common goal
contribute your understanding of the problem
respond to, and work to understand, others' questions, insights and solutions. Each member empowers the other to speak and contribute, and to consider their contributions
You are dependent on and accountable for others, and they depend on and accountable for you
Cooperative Learning
Definition of Cooperative Learning
Cooperative Learning is related to Collaborative Learning.
Method of instructions that students work together in groups to solve a specific kind of activity.
Cooperative Learning
Characteristics of Cooperative Learning
Groups work face to face and learn to work as team.
Students can share strengths and also develop their weaker skills.
Interpersonal skills are developed.
Students learn to deal with conflicts.
Cooperative Learning
Conditions for CL work
Students need to feel safe and also challenged.
Groups need to be small enough that everyone can contribute.
Task must be clearly defined.
Active Learning
Passive Learning - Reading Absorbing the information read
Memorizing elements of the text
Not critically responding to the text
Active Learning
Passive Learning - Listening Listening is more active then reading,
but it can also be done passively
A passive listener does not take notes or tries to stabilish relations between what he's listening and what he knows
Active Learning
Passive Learning – Looking/Seeing
Looking at paintings, maps and graphs can be a very effective way of learning. However, if one does not try to go beyond the information in the picture and try to comprehend the context of its creation, the relations it stabilishes, etc., he would probably forget what he learned very quickly.
Active Learning
Passive Learning – Seeing and Hearing
In addition to PowerPoint lectures, multimedia and movies have the advantage of illustrating reading and lecture content in new (engaging) formats.
Field trips allow people to understand the subject of their studies by seeing it in it's original place.
Concept
Active learning refers to techniques where students do more than simply listen to a lecture.
Active Learning
Class discussion
Discussion requires the learners to think critically on the subject matter and use logic to evaluate their and others' positions.
Think-pair-share activity
Learners take a minute to ponder the previous lesson, later to discuss it with one or more of their peers, finally to share it with the class as part of a formal discussion.
Active Learning
Learning cell
A learning cell is a process of learning where two students alternate asking and answering questions on commonly read materials.
Short written exercise
This is a good way to review materials and provide feedback.
Active Learning
Collaborative learning group
It is a successful way to learn different material for different classes.
Student debate
These debates not only give the student a chance to participate in a fun activity but it also lets them gain some experience with giving a verbal presentation.
Reaction to a video
The video helps the student to understand what they are learning at the time in an alternative presentation mode.
Class game
Different games such as jeopardy and crossword puzzles always seem to get the students minds going.
