How are we Satisfied?

We need some background

We have a problem: sin

• Sin is disobeying God– It is rebellion against His nature– It is rooted in Independence

• Evil is a perversion of Good– God IS Light; Eternal; Before

• C. S. Lewis: – “We are too easily Satisfied”– With a counterfeit

HOW?HOW?

1 John 2:15-17

15     Do not love 15     Do not love the world the world nor the things in the world. nor the things in the world. If If anyone loves the world, the anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in love of the Father is not in him. him.           16     For all that is in the 16     For all that is in the world, world, the lust of the flesh the lust of the flesh and and the lust of the eyes the lust of the eyes and and the boastful pride of life, the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is is not from the Father, but is from the world. from the world.           17     17     The world is passing The world is passing away, and away, and also also its lusts; but its lusts; but the one who the one who does the will of does the will of God lives forever. THE WEIGHT OF GLORY

SO . . .HOW DO WE FIND SATISFACTION?

Go Back to Paul’s Words Again

• 2 Cor. 12:9-10• 9 And He has said to me, “My grace My grace is

sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ power of Christ may dwell in me.

• 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s for Christ’s sakesake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Go Back to Paul’s Words Again• 1 Tim 6:3-12• 3 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those

of our Lord Jesus ChristLord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, • 4 he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest

in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions,

• 5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

• 6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.

• 7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.

• 8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. • 9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish

and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. • 10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it

have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. • 11 But But flee from these thingsflee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness,

godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. • 12 Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were

called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Go Back to Paul’s Words Again• Philippians 4:10• 10 But I rejoiced in the Lord in the Lord greatly, that now at

last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity.

• 11 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.

• 12 I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

• 13 I can do all things through Him through Him who strengthens me.

Go Back to Paul’s Words Again

• Philippians 1:21

•21 For to me, to live to live is Christ is Christ and to die is gain.

Go Back to Paul’s Words Again• Col. 1: 1-8a• 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christwith Christ, keep seeking

the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. • 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are

on earth. • 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in Godyour life is hidden with Christ in God. • 4 When Christ, Christ, who is our lifewho is our life, is revealed, then you also will

be revealed with Him in glory. • 5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as

dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

• 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,

• 7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.

• 8 But now you also, put them all aside

GOD IS GOD IS THE SOURCE THE SUBSTANCE

THE SATISFACTION

“Were we able to [get] from any man a complete answer to the question, ‘What comes into your mind when you think about God?’, we might predict with certainty the spiritual future of that man”

Jeremiah 923 Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.

Hosea 66 For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings

John 173 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Jesus also said . . .

• 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

• 20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

• 21 for where your treasure iswhere your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” [Matt. 6:19-21]

WHERE’S YOUR TREASURE?

Three Thoughts

• What if I don’t treasure God?– You might not know Him• The GOSPEL• The sting of sin (Romans 7; Isaiah 6)• The Grace of God in the Death of Christ

– You might be sick

• I do treasure Him, but I am not sure what to do with that.– This is your Life – Don’t Waste it
