Where is Singapore?

Why would the European Nation want to colonize Singapore?

• Trade with China was expanding.

• They  believed they needed to “refit, revitalize and protect their merchant fleet”

• Needed to prevent any advances made by the Dutch in the East Indies.

When & Who?

• Singapore was colonized in 1819

by the British.

• A man named Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (Lieutenant Governor of Java) was the man who initiated the colonization.

Effects of colonization

Singapore became one of the British Straits Settlements

The British Port in Singapore became important as a centre for the Indian China Trade

What is a Straits Settlement?

• The territories controlled by the British

Benefits for the People of Singapore

• The trading port (founded during the colonization) is still used today , serving world markets and major multinational corporations

• Better railroads

• Brings in a more diverse culture

Drawbacks for the People of Singapore

• Heavy taxes for the people to the colonizer •Natives become the lower class because the British were now the upper class.

Benefits for Stamford Raffles

• Became famous

• Later known as the “Father of Singapore”

• Became successful in the expansion of the British empire

• Able to control a major trading post
