What is Community Risk Reduction?

Community Risk Reduction is the identification and prioritization of risks followed by the integrated application of resources to

improve public safety and reduce increasing call volume. (Strategic Fire, 2016)

Home Fire Safety Visits allow for direct transmission of home fire & life safety information to residents.

In a 45 minute visit, current fire safety conditions are evaluated and discussed, including:

• Smoke and CO alarms: location, age, and condition

• Heat sources: fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters

• Common fire hazards throughout the home

• Fire escape: 2 exits from every bedroom & meeting place

• Special considerations for smokers, older adults, people who are deaf/hard of hearing

If needed, fire personnel will install free smoke alarms or replace alarm batteries.

The goal of Home Fire Safety Visits is to empower the resident with the knowledge needed to make their residence safer.

Spokane County’s rate of death from unintentional falls is nearly THREE TIMES the national rate!

Intervention: Remembering WhenA fire and fall prevention program for older adults

• Population: 65 and older, lives independently• Referral: Community referral or self identify fire and/or fall risk• Message: 8 skills on falls prevention & 8 skills about fire safety • Format: Group Presentation
