NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
In orchestral music, there are many editorial markings that are open for interpretation. In an effort to maintain consistency and clarity you may find some of these markings in this piece. In general, markings for fingerings, bowing patterns, and other items will only be marked with their initial appearance. For a more detailed explanation of our editorial markings, please download the free PDF at www.alfred.com/stringeditorial.

PROGRAM NOTESThis is an effective and fun to play concert/contest piece that was inspired when the composer read several tales written by Edgar Allan Poe. In particular, the stories “The Raven”, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” were the inspiration for this dark and mysterious piece. One can hear the word “nevermore” spoken by the raven represented by the knocking on top of the instrument at the beginning of the piece.
Poe was an American writer, editor, and literary critic who lived in the first half of the 19th century and is best known for his poetry and short stories. He was one of the first writers in the United States to create short stories and also contributed to the emerging genre of science fiction. He briefly attended the University of Virginia, near where the composer lives, but left the school after just one year due to a lack of money.
NOTES TO THE CONDUCTORThis piece should always have a forward momentum, and the tempo should not be allowed to drag. The sound of the students rapping on the hollow, wooden surface of their instruments should be distinctive and easily heard by the listener. A predominant marcato style is desirable though most of the piece except for measures 80 through 90 where a contrasting legato style is desirable.
