Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 4th African Conference on Emergency Medicine (AfCEM).
AfCEM has become a premier international conference among emergency care providers. The theme of AfCEM 2018 is Breaking Barriers in Emergency Medicine Education with an emphasis on increasing emergency medicine
coverage across Africa. AfCEM 2018 will provide every attendee great opportunities to share knowledge, experiences and enrich professional networks.
In line with our theme, we are excited to continue the growing discussion of FAME: freely accessible medical education1. The focus is on what is needed in Africa and other resource-constrained settings, to deliver high-quality and up-to- date education in emergency care. It is not just about social media or technology. It is about breaking barriers in education: making education available, appropriate and affordable for Africa.
Rwanda is one of the most rapidly developing countries in Africa with a unique natural beauty, culture and tradition. Great weather mixed with friendly faces and a warm welcome awaits you in the land of a thousand hills. Welcome to AfCEM 2018 and we hope you enjoy your time in Kigali, Rwanda!
Best regards,Gabin MbanjumucyoChair, AfCEM 2018President of Rwanda Emergency Care Association (RECA)
WELCOME TO AfCEM 2018
Dear AFEM members and Supporters,
2018 holds great promise and excitement as we look ahead to the African Conference on Emergency Medicine (AfCEM2018) in November. Together with our partner and friend, RECA, we are working towards the best AfCEM ever in beautiful Kigali, Rwanda.
Our previous conferences in Ghana, Ethiopia and Egypt have demonstrated that we can host world-class
educational events on the continent. I would like to thank our speakers, attendees and sponsors who have attended and supported us in the past, for helping us grow AfCEM into what it is today. Each conference is the opportunity to bring together African EM and Global Health experts, deliver quality African appropriate EM education and the opportunity to engage with some of the most inspiring and thoughtful EM practitioners in the world.
We hope that you will be part of this African conversation in Kigali from 5-9 November 2018.

Kigali offers a wide range of cuisines to entice any appetite. Whether it is a seekh kabob or vegetables with ugali, Kigali is sure to offer a tasty meal. Listed are a sample of restaurants throughout the city (more can be found online). Vegetarian options are available at nearly all restaurants. Most taxis know where restaurants are located in the city. Rarely are reservations needed but you may want to call in advance to ensure a table. Bon appetit!

Tourism is a main attraction to Rwanda. With a diverse landscape ranging from the grasslands of Akagera National Park to the rainforests in Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda is sure to appeal to nearly every tourist. Kigali itself is nestled between several surrounding hills making any drive through the city - night or day - picturesque. One can horseback ride on the ridge of Mount Kigali or simpy pass time away in one of the museum’s, all the while enjoying and embracing the Land of A Thousand Hills.

Along with safaris in Akagera National Park, Rwanda offers trekking in two rainforest-laden parks: Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park. Various species of primates inhabit both parks. Gorillas and golden monkeys can be found in Volcanoes while chimpanzees and colobus monkeys dwell in Nyungwe. In addition to primates, the foilage is quite unique and the views stunning. The following websites provide more information about hiring guides and arranging trips.
