LinkedIn Etiquette

Provide truthful information: many universities, employers and potential employers check LinkedIn for references.

Tollboothing: This refers to people who charge for allowing people to have access to your network. This is not the intent of LinkedIn.

Fishing for fake recommendations: If you are asked for a recommendation from someone that you don’t know well my response is “I’ sorry, I haven’t used your service directly, or, we haven’t worked together directly. Could you provide me with your service and I’ll try it and then provide you with a recommendation?”

Light-linking: Refers to people who don’t know you well that invite you to connect. If you’re not comfortable don’t respond to the email. If you check “don’t know this person” and they receive five of those responses they could get kicked out of LinkedIn.

Email in the field name: This is a common offense and it is against the User Agreement.
