Principals Message
Welcome to Week 8, can you believe that there are only 3 ½ weeks left in the school year! There was an interesting report released last week that is worth sharing with you. It was released by the Office of NSW Advocate for Children and Young People and it contradicts some of the views portrayed in the media about children and young people. Too often today, children and young people are portrayed negatively in the media, but some of the findings offer great encouragement. Over 4,000 children and young people in NSW between the ages of 4 and 24 provided feedback through a survey organised by the Minister’s office. Some of the findings included:
Children and young people identified the top 5 qualities of a good society as: respect, equality, safety, a supportive environment and having a voice
Their greatest hopes were: making the world a better place, being better educated and achieving their goals and dreams
Polling also brought to light that more than one third (33%) of children and young people cite their parents or guardians as their heroes. Interestingly only one in ten stated that celebrities were their heroes.
And at least 3 out of 5 children and young people have participated in volunteering in the last 12 months saying that their wish to do good and give back to the community as their reason for doing so.
I might be wrong, but I think if we were to survey the students of Cardiff South, we would see similar results. Our future is in good hands if this is how children and young people are thinking – don’t you agree? Last week we conducted the elections for our 2016 School Captains. I’d like to once again congratulate all of the nominees on the way they conducted themselves throughout the process, for delivering wonderful speeches last Thursday and supporting each other throughout. One or two speeches even brought tears to the teachers’ eyes. As a result of the voting, I am very pleased to announce that Cardiff South’s 2016 School Captains will be: Grace Luck, Gisele Alley, Cory Vizintin and Edward McLeish (known as Eddie). Finally, both our Junior and Senior Choirs performed yesterday at Amaroo aged care facility and Charlestown Square. I was privileged to be able to attend and enjoy their performances. Once again they displayed a high level of respect for members of our community and great pride in our school. Most impressive of all was that although the performance ‘conditions’ at Charlestown Square left a lot to be desired, they still sung with enthusiasm and joy – a real credit to each of them. Congratulations to all of the students involved, and thank you Mrs Leggett, Miss Murray and Miss Drummond for giving our students such worthwhile and exciting opportunities to perform. Have a great week. David Holland

K-2 Swimming Rescheduled
In case you missed the message on the Skoolbag app. Last week’s K-2 swimming session was cancelled due to
the extreme heat. Although swimming is usually a cool activity, the indoor centre at Elermore Vale can be quite
stifling in the heat and student and staff safety was paramount. This lesson will now be made up on Friday 11th
December in Week 10.
Financial Roll Over Schools’ financial roll over is the 30th November. To help this process proceed smoothly, we are asking that all
payments be finalised by November 27. Some of the outstanding amounts might be for bookpacks, either this
year and/or previous years, preschool fees or the upcoming events such at Party Day. Payments can be made
over the phone using your credit card or by by coming into the office with cash or eftpos. Thank you for your
cooperation.

Uniform Shop – Sale
The uniform shop currently has a limited supply of sports house shirts which are ‘factory seconds’ that will be
offered on sale for $5 each each Wednesday until sold. Unfortunately, because they are factory seconds, they
are only available for Myall, Trawalla and Wallaroi – there were no factory seconds received for Arunta. These
will be available on a first in, best dressed basis. Once they’re sold that’s it. The uniform shop is open every
Wednesday morning between 8:30-9:30am.
Public ICE Forum
We have been informed that Newcastle’s ‘Community Drug Action Team’ is hosting a public forum on the drug
‘ICE” between 6:30-8:00pm on the 24th November at Newcastle City Hall. The action team is seeking input from
the community on how they can address this problem in our city. If you are interested in attending, please rsvp
to Tony Brown at cdatnewcastle@gmail.com by the 18th November.

On Monday the 23rd of November, the Junior and Senior Choir performed at Amaroo Aged Care Facility and
Charlestown Square Shopping Centre. The Junior Choir performed 4 songs which were All I Want for Christmas
Is My 2 Front Teeth, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Jingle Bells. The
Senior Choir performed 5 songs and they were Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas with a little bit of our
pizazz, Jingle Bell Rock, Winter Wonderland mixed with Here Comes Santa Claus, God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman
and Feliz Navidad. The first venue the Choirs performed at was Amaroo. After singing, the Choirs got the chance
to talk to all of the elderly people, they were very nice. After performing at Amaroo we travelled by a bendy bus
to Charlestown Square. We performed out the front of Myer, even though we had a few hiccups with the sound
we had fun and hope to do it again next year.
Yesterday, the Senior and Junior Choir went to Amaroo Aged Care Facility and Charlestown Square. When we
were at Amaroo there was a lady named Edith; she was singing and dancing along with us. At Charlestown
Square we sang to our parents and other people. It was the best day.
Thank you to Miss Murray, Miss Drummond, Mrs Nash and Mrs Leggett for taking us.

“It is a great pleasure to announce our new student leaders for 2016. Our Captains are Harry Keating and
Ashleigh Lewis. This year for the first time in Cardiff High School history we have increased the number of vice‐
captains from two to four to acknowledge the ever increasing number of senior students completing their HSC
and the quality of students who apply for these sought after leadership positions. Our vice‐captains for 2016
are Wade Lambert, Jake Wills, Rachel Knight and Billi Prince. Congratulations to these students and I look
forward to working with them closely over the next 12 months.” Gareth Erskine, Principal - CHS
Our Canteen Online ‘Lunch on Us’ competition There are several ‘Lunch on Us’ vouchers that have not yet been redeemed. If you have been a successful ‘Lunch
on Us’ winner and have not yet ordered your ‘free lunch’ from the canteen, please do so soon; all vouchers will
expire at the end of this term.
Cardiff South Pubic School Giant Christmas Hamper Raffle 2015 The Cardiff South Public School P&C Committee are organising a mega Christmas raffle with a minimum of 13 prizes to win. To help us make this a huge success we need your kind, wonderful Christmas hamper donations to fill the containers in your child’s classroom. Some ideas of donations are: Christmas food, Christmas decorations, small toys and novelty items. We would love it if each class container could be filled before Wednesday 9th December so that it is ready for the raffle on Thursday 10th December, which is going to be drawn in the Hall at 2pm.
