Tribal Entrepreneurship to Ensure Sustainable Livelihood

Tribal Photo Exhibition & Art Festival Through

Balmudra Development and Research Center, Pune

• We have set up numerous objectives for the overall development of STs, one of the prime objective is to provide sustainable livelihood along with awareness for proper supply chain to ensure appropriate market for their products.

• Tribal people face several problems regarding marketing handicrafts and artifacts. They gets very little price of their products as major part of money is taken by middleman.

Tribal India : A Photographic Journey The Exhibition was not about displaying photographs but also introducing the lifestyle & livelihood of the tribal communities in India.

Methodology - 1

AS a part of celebration of the WORLD TRIBAL DAY on AUG 9 , A unique Photography Exhibition was organized for the first time in PUNE by our Ngo in 2014 - for 5 days.

More than 400 frames of 60 Indian tribes were displayed.

We have invited two Warli artist from Vikramgadh village Dahanu Taluka, Maharashtra to show the live demo and to sell their articles directly to the visitors.

We also conducted the paid workshops for art lovers.

During these 5 days the two artists earned Rs 24,800 through selling & Rs 9,000 through two days workshops .

products. • Curiosity of general public to know the lifestyle,

culture of Indian tribes. • Visitors demands photo books on tribal life.• Demand was also for product catalogue &

contact no. of artists. • Generation of donation for tribal livelihood.

Recommendations of methodology -1

• If Government/corporate will promote such exhibitions, tribal culture will be conserved.

• Considering the value chain of products, value addition is necessary for competitive market.

• youth of tribal community should be provided with proper vocational training & marketing skill to generate the local employment. It will stop migration and it help to preserve the tribal culture.

• Tribal Art & dance festival should be arranged with photo exhibition.

Recommendations of methodology -1

• To encash the domestic as well as inter national market and online market portal such exhibitions should be arranged in all metro cities and outside India.

• Documentary films can be made on tribal culture & lifestyle. It will help in preserving a record of tribal culture and history in the face of modernization and integration.

Methodology – 2. Toolkits for Sustainable Livelihood

* Our NGO has distributed toolkits & carpenter kits to Thakar & Katkari community of Nagewadi village near Karjat, Maharashtra for sustainable livelihood. It diminishes their labor and increases the income. * The daily wage labour charges were increased by Rs 30 per day and the carpenters got Rs 100 per day more because of the tool kits .

Recommendations – Such activities can be done with the help of CSR funds .

Conclusion • It is seen that Government, NGO and core marketing teams

combined together can play significant role in tribal entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihood.

• Each sector can used its core strength such as a) Government has resources and infrastructureb) NGO/societies like us can build capacity, spread awareness

and provide training to community. c) Core marketing team can provide marketing solutions. d) PM Modi approved stand up & Start up India scheme to

entrepreneurs amongs sc/st and women. To make Job creators rather than job seekers , we all needs to work together to achieve it.
