Junior tennisplayers fromas far awayasNorwayand Japanhave traveled toAnguilla for theAnguillaCup,takingplaceonislandthisweek.70players,accompaniedbyparents,coachesandtournament officials, are here on island for this ITF sanctioned tournament, an inspiringtestimonytotheisland’sremarkablerecoveryfromtheimpactofHurricaneIrmalastFall.“The valueof this tournamentweek goesbeyond thenewvisitors it brings toour island, thepromotionalexposureforourdestination,andthepleasureweallshareinenjoyingworld-classtennis,” said the Hon. Cardigan Connor, Parliamentary Secretary. “It also benefits our localathletesandsportscommunities,asourlocalyoungsterswillcompeteagainstaninternationalfield, gaining invaluable experience and confidence in their game. The event represents thelargestgroupmovement to the islandsince Irma,and it is invaluable insignaling to theworldthatAnguillaisbackinbusiness,andreadytowelcomeourguests.”The Anguilla Cup got off to an exciting start on Sunday with a thrilling pro exhibitionmatchfeaturingformerGrandSlamWinnerXavierMalisseandUniversityofMiamiall-starJesseFlores.Qualifyingmatcheswill runfromMonday,January15thoughWednesday,January17,startingat8:30AM.TheQuarterfinalsarescheduledforThursday,January18;theSemi-finalsonFriday,January19.
