FACULTÉ DES LETTRES ELCF
Knowledge is constructed by means of language
better understanding of the role of plurilingualism in knowledge construction in higher education (Gajo et al. 2013, Steffen 2013b, Gajo&Steffen 2014)
• actual bi-plurilingual discourse practices in instructional interaction in institutional settings
• social representations in relation to plurilingualism, language practices and policies
– preschool and primary bilingual education (Gajo & Steffen forthcoming,
Gajo, Grobet & Steffen forthcoming)
– secondary bilingual education (Steffen 2013a, Serra & Steffen 2010)
FACULTÉ DES LETTRES ELCF
European research Project Dylan (Language dynamics and management of diversity) (Berthoud et al. 2013)
Data from Swiss Universities in German, French, Italian, German-French bilingual areas
1. Policies and official documents on plurilingualism and organisation of languages at the Universities
2. Semi-structured interviews about plurilingualism and bi-plurilingual education
3. Bi-plurilingual discourse practices in class
Data
Theoretical background • Conversation analysis • Discourse analysis • Studies on L2 acquisition • Studies on bi-plurilingualism

Policies and representations
Choice of instructional Language/s • 2 Swiss languages: 1 local + 1 non local national languages (German,
French, Italian) • or 1 local national language + 1 international language (English)
Different sociolinguistic & institutional contexts • bilingual , majority, minority L areas Language policies • bilingual and minority L areas tend to have
explicit L policies & bilingual programs • with international standing don’t Similar issues • Local, national and international students,
different linguistic backgrounds • meet national and international job market
requirements • promote international research, student
mobility • & its local and national integration
Similar arguments • equal opportunity to
access courses, scientific content
• Mutual understanding Major arguments for
English • Internationalisation of
research • Academic ranking

-> two-way immersion in 2 local, national Ls
-> linguistically heterogeneous & ± bilingual students, passive competence in L2 (cf. Steffen & Pantet 2011)
provide students from both linguistic communities (+other national & international students) equal opportunity to access academic knowledge ("accès égalitaire”) each in his L1 or dominant L
“Ich versuche einfach beiden Sprachgruppen gerecht zu werden, dass sich keine benachteiligt fuhlt, und dass ich wirklich gleich oft Deutsch wie Französisch spreche (ENSmaths 186).”
Policies and representations HESB-TI
FACULTÉ DES LETTRES ELCF
Policies and representations influence choice of type of bilingual program
But also teachers’ posture towards language alternation and teaching mode (didactics of plurilingualism, language learning)
Unilingual mode
Languages are used “separately” (different moments, different disciplines…)
L2 is used as it were an L1 (endolingual) or an L2 (exolingual)
Bilingual mode
Languages are used in “copresence”
L2 is used in alternation and/or in contrast with L1 Steffen 2013a, Gajo & Steffen forthcoming
Unilingual vs bilingual teaching mode
FACULTÉ DES LETTRES ELCF
Bi-plurilingual discourse practices in class Diversity of practices
• Socio-institutional constraints, policies • Teachers’ representations, posture, teaching strategies • Academic disciplines, fields (law, mathematics, physics,
materials and automotive engineering, economics, management)
• Teaching formats (lecture, seminar, practical class, group work)
building knowledge in a bi-plurilingual mode enhances subject learning by using L as a tool to mediate content in a less familiar L2

• marked • organisation of activities • L1-L2 in juxtaposition
• within an activity • fluid, unmarked • complementarity of L1-L2
resources • continuity of subject
knowledge in L1 and L2
• stressing, reformulation of key-concepts • bilingual conceptualisation
FACULTÉ DES LETTRES ELCF
Lessons in a bi-plurilingual mode: mobilise available bi-plurilingual resources to build up subject
knowledge take advantage of co-presence of different languages:
• to process, negociate linguistic resources for subject knowledge, not only for communication (L as a tool for mediation)
• to work on subject knowledge in differentiated manner, with more communicative and learning tools
require setting up bi-plurilingual resources at several levels: • institutional project (macro-alternation): co-presence of Ls
(≠separation), plurilingualism as a medium of instruction, relationship between L(s) and content subject(s)
• classroom interaction: micro-alternation potentially leading to explicit work on problematic linguistic resources or problematisation of subject knowledge
• instructional activities: meso-alternation integrates to subject knowledge building (double mediation or differentiated content processing)
