Active Workspace: A Window into Enterprise PLM: a CIMdata Commentary

The expansion of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software throughout the enterprise has
provided users in many non-engineering positions including business managers, marketing, sales, and
service support, with improved access to enterprise PLM data. However, as the reach of PLM enabling
solutions has grown, so also has the pressure to improve and simplify the user experience. The new class
of extended enterprise users expects effortless and intuitive interaction with PLM data and associated
functionality. Siemens PLM Software (Siemens) developed Active Workspace to provide a proficient,
consistent, and graphically rich user experience into the realm of PLM data and applications. CIMdata
long anticipated that the growth of PLM into the broader enterprise would require improvements in ease
of use and recognizes Siemens’ Active Workspace for its impact.

Active Workspace presents a user-interaction model that supports visual decision-making and
collaboration across the extended enterprise. Siemens emphasizes the fundamental concepts of Active
Workspace with the keywords: personalized, proactive, intuitive, and everywhere. Users can customize

their instance of the interface to best fit their specific needs. Users may also configure Active
Workspace for a specific industry, group, or role, guaranteeing they see only relevant tasks and data.
Active Workspace is a component of the Siemens Teamcenter portfolio and runs in a range of browsers
on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. The only requirement is that the browser
must support HTML51 and the latest Cascading Style Sheets language, CSS3.
2 The layout follows
Microsoft’s Metro look and feel with screen tiles that allow the user to open their inbox, their home
folder, and any saved searches. Tiles can be pinned to the home page (gateway), sized, and positioned as
the user wishes.
In the main work area of Active Workspace, users can select and access product requirements, create
and view product designs, explore product structures, and participate in and execute workflow
assignments. CIMdata welcomes Active Workspace’s ability to collect all the important data and task
action controls in one unified, consistent, user-managed environment. Active Workspace users will
benefit from being able to quickly find and execute their daily work responsibilities.
Searching the PLM Repository
Active Workspace includes a textual search capability that allows users to locate the PLM data they
need. Using a familiar Search bar in the upper-right of the Active Workspace window, users can enter
their search text. The traditional wildcard asterisk (*) and logic operators of AND, OR, and NOT are
supported.

Active Workspace presents search results in an intelligent, easily readable layout showing potential
filters including object type, owner, and release status that can be applied to further narrow the search. A
bar chart illustrates the count of results by a specified filter that provides the user insights into the results
distribution within the PLM repository or relevant PLM data in external and third-party repositories.
Users may drill down to narrow the search by double clicking on the bar chart. For example, when

double clicking on the Part bar in Figure 2, Active Workspace will display the next level chart based on
the Owners of the data. As the search progresses, Active Workspace displays “breadcrumbs” reflecting
the sequence of filters that have been applied keeping users informed of the narrowing search criteria (as
seen in Figure 3). CIMdata believes this style of graphical results presentation will be readily accepted
across the enterprise as more non-engineering organizations interact with PLM data.
In an industry leading move, Siemens integrates the technology of 3D geometric shape search in Active
Workspace. Often a simple search based on text attributes cannot clearly identify and locate the desired
component model. Part shape becomes the defining factor. Using a shape search capability, product
engineers benefit when looking for a previously designed component model to use in their current
design. Active Workspace geometric search provides sliding bar controls to filter the search criteria by
shape similarity and by size. In the extended enterprise, procurement, field service, and other business
related organizations benefit from these expanded options as they search for a part that may not be exact,
but is similar to a target reference model.
A keyword search alone could not have brought together the collection of parts shown in Figure 3—a
shape search is required to accomplish this. Their geometric similarity could be of great interest to
procurement, maintenance or on the production line.

CIMdata has previously projected that the technologies of text and geometric shape search would merge.
Within Active Workspace Siemens is leading the efforts to combine these two search capabilities to the
benefit of their users.
As PLM functionality spreads throughout the extended enterprise, CIMdata advises that companies pay

Riverside Adds New Dimension to Portfolio

The Riverside Company has acquired Fisher/Unitech (Fisher), a value-added reseller of 3D solid
modeling design software, 3D printing hardware and related products and services. Based in Troy,
Michigan, the company has 13 locations with full classroom facilities supporting sales across 16 states.
The company’s products, training, and consulting services are employed by customers to create new
products that change the world.
Founded in 1993, Fisher operates largely in the Midwest and New England. Fisher is the world’s largest
distributor of Stratasys 3D printers and the third-largest distributor of SolidWorks software in the U.S.
“3D solid modeling and additive manufacturing are increasingly being employed for a wide array of
product design, prototype development and manufacturing applications,” said Riverside Partner Steve
Dyke. “Fisher/Unitech is a trusted resource for a broad array of customers in numerous industries.”
Fisher/Unitech has more than 8,000 customers, including some of the most prominent manufacurers in
aerospace, consumer goods, automobiles, and defense.
Fisher/Unitech CEO Charlie Hess and Vice President of Technology Greg Fisher founded the company
and will remain in their positions along with the rest of the management team.

Riverside’s growth plans for Fisher/Unitech include investing in the company’s sales, marketing and

Anark® Announces Strategic Reseller Agreement with PLM Group

Anark Corporation today announced it has signed a Strategic Reseller Agreement with PLM Group,
SolidWorks' largest reseller in the Nordic region.
The paradigm shift away from traditional 2-dimensional engineering drawings to communicate design
intent, and the move toward paperless processes in manufacturing through the use of Model-Based
Definition (MBD) and Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) best practices, enables substantial cost-savings
and new efficiencies within design and manufacturing operations.
Leveraging Anark's well-known 3D MBE successes within the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as
many of the world's most innovative Enterprises (like General Electric, Lockheed Martin, Ericsson

ANSYS and NCSA Achieve Supercomputing Milestone

ANSYS and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) announced today that they
have scaled ANSYS® Fluent
® to 36,000 compute cores – an industry first that could lead to greater
efficiencies and increased innovation throughout manufacturers' product development processes.
As companies increasingly seek to minimize time, quality and cost pressures by using engineering
simulation, they have been constrained by compute power. High-performance computing (HPC) has
become a core strategic technology enabling enhanced insight into product performance and improving
the productivity by considering more design variants.
The combination of the Blue Waters supercomputer and the Cray Inc. engineering team, the NCSA
Private Sector Program technical team, and recent enhancements to the Fluent code enables
organizations to study the most complex and realistic simulation cases. Blue Waters uses hundreds of
thousands of computational cores to achieve peak performance of more than 13 quadrillion calculations
per second. That advanced compute power is helpful for applications like Fluent software, an industry-
leading computational fluid dynamics solution used by organizations around the world.
"We're connecting all the dots," said Ahmed Taha, the NCSA senior computational resource coordinator
who led this extreme benchmarking project. "NCSA is unique in connecting the industrial users, the
hardware and software vendors, and the domain expertise of our staff. In addition, this level of
scalability for a commercial fluid dynamics solver is unprecedented on our system, especially
considering the complexity of the model physics with transient, turbulent flow, chemical species
transport and multiple non-reacting flows."
"Compute power has increased a thousand-fold over the last decade – enabling engineers to solve
problems that were once unsolvable," said Wim Slagter, ANSYS HPC product manager. "While most
organizations don't have access to 36,000 cores today, it won't be long before these extreme core counts
are commonplace. And even today's users who are running at much lower core counts will see direct
benefits through considerably greater efficiencies. The results will be more amazing products delivered
to customers much faster than ever."
ANSYS and NCSA plan to continue exploring the limits of scale-out computing, including testing and
improving the scaling of ANSYS fluid dynamics models involving even more complex physics. Other
collaborative efforts include running Fluent on NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs), as well as
testing the supercomputing limits for applications such as turbomachinery using ANSYS CFX®.

Autodesk, Inc. As an Advisor Partner, Applied Software has shown that it has made significant
investment in its PLM 360 business, provides the highest level of industry acumen, and has solution
knowledge to sell and support the Autodesk PLM 360 Cloud Service Solutions.

CCUBE Chooses the Solair ‘White Label PLM’ Laying the Foundations for Future Use of its IoT

Just a few months ago Solair announced the launch of its White Label PLM, the cloud-based PLM for
indirect sale to software houses and VARs that they can rebrand and sell as an innovative and scalable
PLM solution to their own customer base. The news was widely reported on a global level and a few
days ago an agreement was reached with the Japanese multi-CAD VAR CCUBE who has chosen the
White Label PLM to expand its products to offer its customers the most innovative and technologically
advanced PLM on the market.
CCUBE is a VAR that offers engineering services and CAD/CAM solutions to manufacturing
companies. It did not have a PLM solution in its portfolio and the agreement with Solair was met with
instant interest for two reasons: the White Label PLM is a ready to use solution that can be resold with
the CCUBE brand and developed and customised to meet specific customer needs (thus avoiding long
development times and the use of specialised resources that are necessary to create a PLM), and
secondly because it is a cloud-based solution.
In particular CCUBE saw that the agreement with Solair will enable them to develop their business in
the field of the IoT. The Japanese VAR will start supplying a PLM solution to manage information and
data produced during product development. The company is also planning to manage these products

Nemetschek Allplan Awards Student Grant to New Talents for Second Time

Nemetschek Allplan places great importance on promoting new talents. With its international education
platform Allplan Campus, the company establishes a link to research and teaching in schools and
universities, from which both sides benefit. The student grant – awarded this year for the second time –
further aims to support vocational college graduates who are embarking on a diploma or bachelor in
architecture or engineering at a German university. Highly motivated and willing to learn, as well as
socially and socio-politically committed were other desired traits.
The recipient of this year's grant is Kristina Tranakin. She has completed an apprenticeship to become a
construction draftswoman and is now in her second semester of a degree in civil engineering at THM
University of Applied Sciences in Gießen. The grant is worth 300 euros a month and will be awarded for

one calendar year.
Karin Schmidt, head of the Education Team at Nemetschek Allplan explains: "The response to the
announcement of the second Nemetschek Allplan grant again exceeded our expectations. We were

commitment in their free time." To recognize these accomplishments, Nemetschek Allplan is this year,
for the first time, also giving a lump sum of 300 euros to each of the candidates in places two through
four.

TCS’s goIT Student Technology Awareness Program Strengthens STEM Skills for 2,000 Teens in
Toronto

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) celebrated its first Canadian goIT Student Technology Awareness
Program at Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute today. TCS worked with the Toronto District School Board to
implement the innovative program in ten Toronto schools this fall.
“TCS believes strongly in impact through empowerment,” said Akhilesh Tripathi, Head, TCS Canada.
“Not only will these young people have more career choices, Canada’s ICT industry will also benefit
from having a local skilled labour force.”
goIT is an in-class, hands-on curriculum for grade eight and nine students to learn about computer
programming, coding and robotics, and gain an understanding of possible careers in science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Nearly 2,000 Toronto students will have
participated in TCS’ inaugural Canadian program by the end of November.
“goIT programs are helping students see the connections between their studies, the world beyond high
school and their future careers,” said Liz Sandals, Minister of Education. “Working with partners like
Tata Consultancy Services we are ensuring that learning is even more compelling, and allowing our
students to become the innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders of tomorrow. Through programs like goIT,
we’re helping more students gain the skills, knowledge and confidence for future careers in Computer
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.”
In 2009, TCS launched the goIT program in the US to address the problem of decreasing university
enrolment in STEM related careers. It has since expanded to ten US cities and so far engaged more than
7,500 middle and high school students. TCS Canada applied goIT best practices and worked with
Canada’s Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) to develop a further
customized program addressing the needs of Canadian students. For the program in the Toronto District
Schools, students code using the latest icon-based programming languages, including Lego Mindstorms
at the eighth grade level and Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) App Inventor at the ninth
grade level. In the process, goIT participants acquire critical thinking and problem solving skills, while

involved in this competition for eight years.
This year, participants are invited to draw a place or monument in 3D that best represents their country,
using CAD or image editing software.

than 1 MB in size. All the entries will be published on www.traceparts.com, and the best design will be
revealed on December 24, 2014.

The University of Tokyo Researchers Advance Development of Total Artificial Heart with PTC Creo®

PTC® today announced that researchers at the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Medicine,
pioneers in the development of artificial hearts, are using PTC Creo® design software for the
development of a Total Artificial Heart. The renowned institution has been involved in artificial heart
research since 1959, and has been performing successful experimentation with animals since 1970. The
advanced 3D modelling capabilities provided by PTC Creo are a key component in the research team’s
goal to develop a fully implantable Total Artificial Heart by 2016.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that heart failure affects more than 20 million people
worldwide with an additional two million new cases diagnosed annually. Approximately 5,000 heart
transplants are performed worldwide each year. The average wait time for a heart transplant in Japan is
reported to be 981 days. The increase in heart disease as well as the critical shortage of donor hearts is a

driving force behind artificial heart research, as the development of an implantable artificial heart that
completely replaces an existing human heart would be a medical breakthrough.
There are two types of artificial heart: the Total Artificial Heart that completely replaces a human heart
and the Ventricular Assist Device that is implanted in the human body and complements the pumping
capability of an existing heart. The University’s artificial heart development team is working on
comprehensive research and development activities focusing on Total Artificial Hearts, and is using
PTC Creo to develop a Total Artificial Heart with hydrodynamic levitating impeller, lubricated by the
blood in the pump (hydrodynamic bearing), promising remarkable improvement in durability. In 2008, a
goat with an implanted Total Artificial Heart survived 153 days, setting the survival record in Japan. The
team also succeeded in keeping a goat alive for 532 days with a pneumatically-driven Total Artificial
Heart that consists of a blood circulation pump and a power unit outside the body, which is still the
longest worldwide survival record for Total Artificial Heart animals.
The University of Tokyo began using Pro/ENGINEER® design software, the predecessor of PTC Creo,
to create 3D models in its artificial heart design process in 2003 and upgraded to PTC Creo in 2012. The
research team believed that a next-generation Total Artificial Heart would require a non-contact rotary
pump and deployed the PTC CAD solution to share visual information in an effort to maximize device
performance, enhance efficiency and durability, and design a pump that improves blood flow. PTC Creo
3D modelling capability also plays a critical role in component machining and in numerical fluid
dynamics simulation. In October 2014, the team dramatically enhanced the stability of hydrodynamic
bearing in their artificial heart model using PTC Creo, and successfully addressed some of the hemolytic
and thrombotic issues they were facing. PTC Creo also supports daily collaboration across the team by
enabling them to create and share easy-to-understand graphical materials with cross-sections of a 3D
model and animations.

team in engineering an artificial heart,” said Takashi Isoyama, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of
Biomedical Engineering, the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine and a member of the

designs and studies in addition to component machining, and enables our team to make significant

Agilent Technologies Reports Fourth-Quarter 2014 Results

Agilent Technologies Inc. reported orders of $1.91 billion, up 4 percent over one year ago, for the fourth
fiscal quarter ended Oct. 31, 2014, and revenues of $1.81 billion, up 5 percent compared with one year

ago. Fourth-quarter GAAP net income was $16 million, or $0.05 per share. Last year's fourth-quarter
GAAP net income was $211 million, or $0.63 per share.
These results include Keysight Technologies, formerly Agilent's electronic measurement business.
Agilent completed the spinoff of Keysight on Nov. 1 by distributing Keysight common stock to Agilent
shareholders. Keysight financial results will be reported by Keysight as a separate, publicly traded
company.
During the fourth quarter, Agilent had pre-separation costs of $70 million, intangible amortization of
$47 million, a net loss on extinguishment of debt of $68 million, mostly non-cash charges of $68 million
related to exiting the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance business, and a tax expense of $13 million.
Excluding these items and $15 million of other net costs, Agilent reported fourth-quarter adjusted net
income of $297 million, or $0.88 per share(1)
.
Agilent's Life Sciences, Diagnostics and Applied Chemical Markets (LDA) revenues were $1.04 billion,
up 3 percent over last year, reflecting growth across all key end markets. Orders of $1.15 billion were up
5 percent compared with last year. LDA operating margin was 20.4 percent.
"Our LDA business finished the year strong, with record revenues and orders," said Agilent CEO Bill
Sullivan. "During the quarter, while generating these record numbers, we completed the company
separation flawlessly, without business disruption to either company."
"We are excited about Agilent's future as a company focused one hundred percent on the life sciences,
diagnostics and applied markets, with innovative new product rollouts planned for this year and market
trends looking positive," he added.
In FY15, Agilent plans to return approximately $500 million in capital to shareholders, including
approximately $135 million in dividends and approximately $365 million in stock buybacks. The
repurchases will occur from time to time, in the open market, with consideration given to Agilent's stock
price.
Agilent's first-quarter 2015 revenues are expected to be in the range of $1.02 billion to $1.04 billion.
First-quarter non-GAAP earnings are expected to be in the range of $0.39 to $0.43 per share(2)
.
For the full fiscal year 2015, Agilent expects revenue of $4.12 billion to $4.18 billion and non-GAAP
earnings of $1.68 to $1.78 per share(2)

Autodesk Reports Strong Third Quarter Results

Autodesk, Inc. reported financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2015.

Total billings increased 25 percent, compared to the third quarter last year.
Revenue was $618 million, an increase of 11 percent, compared to the third quarter last year as

reported, and increased 12 percent on a constant currency basis. Revenue contribution from the
recent acquisition of Delcam was approximately $14 million.
Total maintenance, desktop (rental), and cloud subscriptions increased by approximately 121,000
from the second quarter of fiscal 2015, including approximately 25,000 subscriptions related to
Delcam. This is the first quarter that Delcam subscriptions have been included in the subscription
count.
GAAP operating margin was 2 percent, compared to 12 percent in the third quarter last year.
Non-GAAP operating margin was 13 percent, compared to 22 percent in the third quarter last
year. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP results is provided in the accompanying tables.
GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.05, compared to $0.25 in the third quarter last year.
Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.25, compared to $0.41 in the third quarter last
year.
Deferred revenue was a record $1 billion, an increase of 31 percent, compared to the third
quarter last year.
Cash flow from operating activities was $136 million, an increase of 50 percent, compared to the
third quarter last year.
"Strong billings and revenue growth was driven by strength in several areas including suites, our
Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) and Manufacturing business segments, large deal
activity, and double-digit growth in all three of our major geographies on a constant currency basis,"
said Carl Bass, Autodesk president and CEO. "We continue to make meaningful progress in our
transition to a more recurring, subscription-based business, adding approximately 121,000 subscriptions
and more flexible enterprise license agreements. As a result, deferred revenue increased significantly to
a record $1 billion. These strong results have led us to raise our outlook for billings and revenue for
fiscal 2015 for the third time this year."

Mentor Graphics Reports Fiscal Third Quarter Results

Mentor Graphics Corporation announced financial results for the company’s fiscal third quarter ended
October 31, 2014. The company reported revenues of $292.7 million, non-GAAP earnings per share of
$0.34, and GAAP earnings per share of $0.18.
“We had revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share that were both records for a third quarter,” said
Walden C. Rhines, chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics. “Strength in automotive products and
services continued in the quarter and expanded into the broader transportation market, as aerospace and
commercial vehicles also transition from mechanical to electronic systems. We are pleased with our
momentum heading into the fourth quarter, with continued strength in transportation, high demand for
design-to-silicon products and a growing pipeline of emulation customers.”

During the quarter Mentor Graphics announced its newest offering and key building block in the
Xpedition® platform, the Xpedition Systems Designer product for multi-board systems connectivity.
The company also announced an integration with Lumerical’s INTERCONNECT to enable new silicon
photonics design methodologies that leverage the Mentor Graphics® Pyxis™ and Calibre® platforms.
TSMC certified the Mentor® Analog FastSPICE (AFS™) Platform for 16nm FinFET processes during
the quarter. Mentor also announced that the Olympus-SoC™ digital design system, the Analog
FastSPICE Platform and the Calibre® signoff solution now meet TSMC’s 10nm FinFET process
requirements for early customers’ test chip and IP design starts.
“Mentor had another successful quarter which again demonstrated strong leverage. A 6% revenue upside
to guidance drove an over 60% increase in non-GAAP earnings per share,” said Gregory K. Hinckley,

APEI Builds the First Multiphysics Simulation App with the Application Builder

Last month marked the release of the Application Builder, now available with COMSOL
Multiphysics® software version 5.0. The Application Builder, which allows COMSOL
® software users
to build an intuitive interface to run any COMSOL model, has been very well received by the
engineering community. COMSOL Multiphysics users are already building applications and exploring
the benefits of sharing their models with colleagues and customers worldwide.
Application Builder Set to Expand Access to Simulation
One such company is Arkansas Power Electronics Intl. (APEI), a manufacturer of high power density
and high performance power electronics products. APEI has found that the Application Builder can
provide enormous benefits throughout the organization.
“I’m building applications to help us expedite our design processes,” says Brice McPherson, a Senior
Staff Engineer at APEI. “Our engineers often spend time running analyses for the sales or manufacturing
departments to find model results based on diverse conditions and requirements. The Application
Builder will be hugely important for accelerating our work in this respect; any colleague outside of the
engineering team will now be able to confidently run these studies by themselves, with no learning
curve.”
The first application built by APEI looks at fusing current and ampacity of wire bonds – very small
wires used to interconnect semiconductor devices with their packages. “Designing a new wire bonding
scheme for a power semiconductor usually requires a simulation specialist, who needs to spend time

setting up the model and analyzing the temperature increase under a variety of conditions,” says
McPherson. “We decided to use this common design request to take a first look at the Application
Builder and to aid our colleagues working in manufacturing.”
“The Application Builder let us build a powerful, yet easy-to-use application,” says McPherson. “When
dealing with power, we have to be mindful of how much current we can safely transfer through the
wires. This is heavily dependent on the geometry of the wire and the loop. One function of the app we
created (see above figure, left) uses a parametric sweep to show how the number of wires affects the
peak wire temperature at a set current. Previously, we had to look these values up using tables that we
generated from many sweeps in COMSOL Multiphysics,” McPherson continues. “Now we can have a
clean, simple application to get that data without requiring an engineer, and the results are more accurate
than what we would have achieved using the tables, since the information provided in the app is
generated on a case-by-case basis.”
The team at APEI envision using the Application Builder for countless other projects in the months to
come, including applications to automate and streamline the calculation of wire bond inductance,
package thermal performance, inductor and transformer design, and layout analysis, just to name a few.
“The Application Builder surpassed my expectations,” McPherson concludes. “It’s very easy to use –
our first application was running smoothly in minutes. The Form Editor is powerful and accessible, as it
uses the same structure, format, and interaction as the COMSOL environment. If you can build a
COMSOL model, it takes little effort to build an application, and the benefits will be felt by many APEI
employees.”

ASCENTEC Adopts NCSIMUL Machine from SPRING Technologies for its new 5-axis Horizontal
Machining Center

Ascentec Engineering was established in 2001 by a team of process and manufacturing engineers with a
solid background in electronics manufacturing processes.
The founders brought with them experience in designing innovative and productivity-enhancing tools
and fixtures that held up to the technology changes within the industry and gained an enviable reputation
as an EMS industry leader for tooling solutions.
In 2007, Ascentec began a Precision Machining division focused on providing quick-turn prototype and
short-run production contract machining, along with integrated assembly services.

It’s an unhappy day indeed when a CNC machine crashes and it may take days, perhaps weeks, for the
damage to be assessed and repaired. During that time, the shop staff not only loses the machine’s
productive capacity but worries that it may not be possible to restore the machine to its previous ability
to hold tight tolerances. It is bad enough when a vertical 3-axis CNC mill crashes, but when it happens
to a 5-axis system that costs many times more, the downside is more serious.
With this in mind, Ascentec Engineering began researching the market for advanced machine simulation
software when it anticipated the installation of its first 5-axis horizontal machining center in 2011.
After narrowing the field to two simulation packages, the company selected NCSIMUL Machine from

SPRING Technologies Inc. based on the software’s capabilities, ease of use and integration with its
Mastercam CAD/CAM software from CNC Software Inc., Tolland, CT., noted David Gilliat, director of

BENEFITS
Ascentec’s 4- and 5-axis manufacturing systems have grown to five machines. The equipment is used
extensively for production and prototyping projects in support of the company’s aerospace and
semiconductor-manufacturing customer base. During this time, there has not been a single crash.
After two days of training, the company’s four multiple-access programmers had a solid working
knowledge of the software and its primary features.
NCSIMUL Machine is accessible to a programmer via a button in the Mastercam programming
environment. Ascentec personnel still use the CAM software’s simulation features when programming,
but they push the button and run it through NCSIMUL Machine before they post the code to a multiaxis
machine.
NCSIMUL Machine analyses the machine-specific G-code and how the machine will perform based on
actual machine and controller characteristics. This analysis, which takes about 15 minutes, results in:
Detection of coding errors
Analysis of machine performance
Verification of the simulated part’s geometry
Automatic flagging of unacceptable conditions
During the past several years, Ascentec’s machining department has experienced substantial sales
growth, nearly doubling each year for the past three years—much of it is attributable to the company’s
expanding 4- and 5-axis machining capabilities. Simulation software has positively influenced this
expansion. In addition, customer service has improved.

Laboratoire Vibrations Acoustique of INSA-Lyon Relies on Actran to Develop Acoustic Methods

MSC Software Corporation today announced that Laboratoire Vibrations Acoustique (LVA) of INSA-
Lyon, one of the top universities of Science and Technology in Europe, has selected MSC
Software's Actran acoustic analysis software to develop innovative acoustic methods at the laboratory.
The Laboratoire Vibrations Acoustique (LVA) was created in the 1970's to build bridges between
research domains such as structural dynamics and acoustics. Today, LVA applies computational
modeling and simulation to several research topics to develop innovative methods that are first applied
to academic problems, and then on realistic systems in order to demonstrate their applicability within
industrial processes.
Acoustic source identification and inverse methods are typical domains where new simulation processes
benefit the methods development initiatives at LVA. In acoustics, inverse methods cover a wide field of
applications, which all rely on the same concept: identifying the inputs of a linear system by observing
the outputs. However, the term of identification methods encompasses goals as different as source
localization in wide acoustic spaces, source field reconstruction on academic or complex geometries,
noise source identification in enclosed sound fields, and source separation or source ranking. A unique
method to treat all of these applications does not exist but several specialized methods have been
developed over the decades. LVA develops new methods to reconstruct velocity field of a complex
structure by measuring noise emitted by the source. For example, an oil pan radiates noise because of its
vibration. By measuring the radiated noise on a virtual box surrounding the oil pan, the method
developed at LVA allows the reconstruction of the velocity and pressure fields with higher accuracy.
"Actran has played an important role during our methods development process," said Nicolas Totaro,
Assistant Professor at LVA of INSA-Lyon. "First, Actran provides input data representing the system,
which is needed to apply the method: the modal bases of the virtual cavity in terms of both acoustic
pressure and particle velocity. These data are crucial and make the application of the method possible.
Second, Actran can be used for numerical experiments that are useful to define limits and capabilities of
the developed method. The present method is intrinsically experimental, but Actran will replace, in a
first validation step, time consuming experiments even if measurements in real conditions are always
necessary. All the conclusions made by means of Actran have been confirmed by measurements."

Usability of the process execution and process design workspaces has been improved with the

compilation of the solver main files. A CAE simulation model can be used as a template for the creation
of other CAE simulation models.
In an analogous manner, a Simulation Model in SPDRM is a data item that contains one or more
components and can have a reference to another Simulation Model, that was used as a source for its
creation.
In this version, a systematic attempt is made for the eloquent communication of all meta-data of the data
items to the users. The Data Manager acquires a new, tabbed interface, where all information related to
the data item of interest is displayed in an organized manner: History graph for components and
simulation models, dependencies, tree-structure and updates are only some of the new data views,
offered in the Data Manager.
Resources Management
This version introduces role-based access control: A user who is assigned more than one roles in the
system, granting different access rights each, can specify according to which role he desires to acquire
permissions during log-in. This way, a user can be both an “administrator” and an “analyst”, without the
need to operate with full permissions all the time.
To facilitate the administrative tasks, the definition of registered applications has been enhanced in order
to account for default options, environmental variables and wrapper programs that might be needed
every time an application is launched. In the same philosophy comes the new, parametric definition of
mime-types based on registered applications, which drastically reduces the maintenance effort.
Scripting
Two new modules have been introduced, for the management of users (um module) and scripts (script
module).
Miscellaneous
From this version onwards, the SPDRM Application Server is also available for Microsoft Windows.
Additionally, Red Hat Enterprise Linux has been added in the list of supported platforms, for both the
Application Server and the Client.
For the installation of the SPDRM Data Server, Oracle Database has been added in the list of supported
and certified databases.
Usability enhancements include a new, efficient and user-friendly file manager with history, auto-
completion and embedded filtering capabilities. Additionally, SPDRM client GUI settings are
automatically saved, allowing the direct continuation of work from where the user left it before log-out.

BricsCAD V15 for OS X unifies the intelligence of 3D direct modeling with advanced 2D design,
turning the Mac into a powerful CAD platform with function familiar to users from native .dwg
applications. The new software offers cross-platform licensing, a familiar user interface, 3D direct and
parametric modeling – all on native .dwg files.
Cross Platform License
As of BricsCAD V15, license keys are cross-platform. This means uses can choose to run BricsCAD on
a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer. Cross platform keys also allow users to try BricsCAD on Mac
extensively with their Windows key. BricsCAD offers an almost identical feature set on all three
platforms.
Familiar User Interface
The BricsCAD interface immediately looks familiar to new users. It offers many of the powerful
features they already know inside of a clean and consistent user experience. Thanks to the unique
context-sensitive Quad cursor, designers are able to create technical drawings, 3D models, and layouts

CCE Updates EnSuite with New Tools for Viewing and Measurement

CCE announced a new release of EnSuite, which includes support for the latest CAD formats and new
features for CAD viewing and quality control applications.

EnSuite has expanded support for viewing and translating parts and assemblies, and for the latest
versions of many major CAD formats, including Creo 3.0, Solid Edge ST7, and Autodesk Inventor
2015. EnSuite already supports the latest versions of other CAD systems, including CATIA V5-6R2014,
CATIA V6-R2013X, NX 9, and JT 9.5, among others. Support for SolidWorks 2015 will be available
very soon!
EnSuite now also includes key enhancements for the embedded CAD viewers, which provide users with
greater flexibility and control over their design data. Some of these updates include:
Spin Tool: A new tool was added to the viewer toolbar to allow users to rotate 3D CAD models
in the directions normal to the screen, in all applicable standard views. By default, the model
rotates around the model center, but users are given additional control to specify the "spin
center" as a point around which the spin tool would rotate the model. This is especially useful
while navigating around an assembly or multi-body model, where users might want to isolate
and rotate around a particular part or face.
Save Custom Views: Users now have the ability to change the orientation of the model, either by
choosing any of the standard views or by rotating and panning the model and saving the custom
view for future reference. This is an extremely useful functionality that provides users with
greater flexibility to save user-defined view definitions for future use in engineering
documentations.
In addition to these new features and updates, a new productivity tool, "Measure Area/Perimeter," has
also been introduced in EnSuite. This productivity tool computes the surface area and perimeter of a
selected face and is particularly useful in quality control processes, where users are often tasked with
comparing two versions of the same model. Besides comparing the physical properties of the entire
model, users can now pick specific faces (external or internal) in EnSuite, and compare the area and
perimeter with the source file.

The new connector is the latest addition to the long list of products that integrate CoSign digital

Mechatronic configuration is one of the core topics within the spectrum of services of EPLAN
Engineering Center. The product is being renamed at the start of SPS IPC Drives to EPLAN
Engineering Configuration, or “EEC” for short – the same abbreviation as before. Configuration as a
core functionality will now be reflected in the product name. For many years, EPLAN has been offering
integrated mechatronic configuration solutions through EEC that can be used to configure components,
machines and even complex installation projects. The decision to rename the EEC product was driven
by the benefits it offers customers:
EPLAN represents “efficient engineering” – standardisation and modularisation via
configuration are a decisive step in this direction.
The consistency of the configuration across all engineering disciplines, including mechanics,
electrics and software, makes forward-looking mechatronic configuration possible.
Along with the name change, the EEC version number will be synchronised with that of the EPLAN
Platform. The coming release will premiere at SPS IPC Drives and be released as Version 2.4. Users
who want to use EEC to generate schematics and 3D assembly layouts through the platform systems will
benefit from the uniform versions. Assignment to the platform’s systems – specifically EPLAN Electric
P8 and EPLAN Pro Panel – has been simplified accordingly.
The new version of the configuration solution naturally builds on proven technology. User benefits
include the ability to continue using models from previous versions of EEC. Also being launched with
EEC Version 2.4 is a series of new functionalities that will save companies time: along with consistently
optimised SAP integration, the new version of EEC also has a standard job server that allows customer-
specific IT workflows around EEC to be efficiently integrated into existing IT landscapes. And EEC
One – the introductory system for standardisation and automation based on Excel technology – is also
being renamed as part of this harmonisation process. But automation in engineering is still paramount.

New GRANTA MI Software uses EMIT Consortium ‘Schema’ Insights to Improve Restricted
Substance Risk Reduction for Aerospace

The Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium today announced technology
upgrades that are being delivered in a new version of the GRANTA MI:Restricted Substances software
from Granta Design. This collates input from Consortium member organizations on how to refine the
underlying data structures (known as the ‘schema’) of the system. The resulting new template
database can be applied by any users of the software to improve existing implementations or quickly
create new ones.
The EMIT Consortium is pioneering an effective approach to managing restricted substances risk—a
problem which, left unmanaged, can result in multi-million dollar implications including:
product redesigns due to material obsolescence, diversion of resources to meet reporting obligations,
and even costly legal liabilities for non-compliance. Members include Airbus Defense & Space, Airbus
Helicopters, Boeing, Honeywell Aerospace, NASA, Rolls-Royce, and United Technologies Corporation.
Granta provides the GRANTA MI software system used by members.
Through its twice-yearly meetings (most recently, hosted by Honeywell Aerospace in September) the
Consortium has discussed and proposed a solution in which aerospace companies can manage their
relevant in-house data (for example, on materials, substances, specifications, and coatings), and may link
it to the best available reference information on restricted substances and the legislation, regulations, and
standards that impact them. Designers and product stewards can run queries that quickly provide insight
into the risks associated with materials, designs, or products. But the complexity, dynamic nature, and
inter-relationships of the data involved makes building and maintaining the right data structures a major
challenge. This challenge can only be overcome with a deep insight into the practical application of the
system. This insight is precisely what the Consortium enables.

module is reduced cost of ownership using a single data visualization product compared to managing

Theorem’s JT add-on module for CATIA V5 to Creo View adapter, provides a fast and effective method
of translating CATIA V5 assemblies, parts and drawings into the PTC Creo View and Siemens JT
Teamcenter Visualization formats whist maintaining full application functionality. As a result, important
and productive features such as sectioning, clash detection and BREP geometry verification are all
supported.
The adapter also incorporates Theorem’s '2 in 1' CATIA V5 capability. This enables CATIA V5
assembly (.CATProduct) files containing components in both native CATIA V5 and CATIA V4 formats
(.CATPart & .model) files to be processed together. The software automatically identifies the data type
of the required parts and applies the correct translation process without any input from the operator
again saving time and the possibility of user error.
Theorem's CATIA V5 to Creo View Adapter will operate completely independently of the PTC
Windchill PDM system and although availability of Windchill is not a pre-requisite, users can gain
additional benefits by configuring the translator as a 'Windchill Worker', bringing the creation and
distribution of visualization files totally under the control of the data management system.

Trelis 15.1 Software Release Announced
