Arts District Chorale Announces Its 2010-2011 Season

Beyond Here Lie Dragons: Maps and Territories

The 2010-2011 Arts District Chorale Season, Beyond Here Lie Dragons: Maps and Territories, explores the profound relevance of creativity and risk-taking to the modern world, through an examination of very old and very new music that breaks through established conventions; through music that depicts the challenges and rewards of the pursuit of peace on earth; through works of art emerging from an intellectual crucible of creative geniuses; and by revealing the cataclysmic encounters of ancient and modern cultures in the Americas. Incorporat-ing architecture, dance, drama, story-telling and a profound sense of place, the four subscription events of the Arts District Chorale's 2010-11 Season again promise Extraordinary Music in Unexpected Ways.

Collaborating partners for this year’s season include Beacham Dance Theater, Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas, organist Christopher Berry, Imperial Brass, and Theatre Three. Each event draws on multiple arts disciplines in addition to great choral music and invites attendees to become participants in the experience as it un-folds. Subscription tickets are available online at www.artsdistrictchorale.org. For further information, contact the Arts District Chorale at 214.942.5085 or info@artsdistrictchorale.org. The Official Host of the Arts District Chorale is The Fairmont Dallas.

The Arts District Chorale is supported in part by deeply appreciated grants from the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, TACA, and the Dallas Arts District Fund of Communities Foundation of Texas.

Arts District Chorale 2010-2011 Season

Beyond Here Lie Dragons: Maps and Territories Event I: A Place of Edges Grand Lobby, Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas Arts District Sunday, October 3, 2010, 7:30 pm with Beacham Dance Theater The Arts District Chorale offers a bold and astonishing celebration of two tumultuous eras, exploring the glittering hu-manistic spirit of the Renaissance, contrasted with the soaring techno-bravery of the 20th Century. Repertoire includes a cappella music by Renaissance masters Ockeghem, Josquin Des Prez, Palestrina, and Allegri, alongside a cappella works by contemporary composers John Tavener, Arvo Part and Eric Whitacre. Led by Constantina Tsolainou, Principal Guest Conductor, along with members of Beacham Dance Theater. Event II: A Bright and Peaceable Kingdom Cathedral Guadalupe, Dallas Arts District Thursday & Friday, December 16 & 17, 2010, 7:30 p.m. with Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas The glorious acoustics and unique Victorian Gothic architecture of Cathedral Guadalupe combine to create a stunning Christmas atmosphere. Once again, ADC will make this event uniquely ours - i.e. the drama of a Boar's Head Festival meets the elegance of a King's College Lessons and Carols. Repertoire includes Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mys-terium", Benjamin Britten's "A Hymn to the Virgin" and Cesar Cui's "Magnificat". Led by Michie Akin, Artistic Director, along with the Children's Chorus of Greater Dallas, the Imperial Brass Quintet, and Christopher Berry, organist. Event III: The Fiercest Borderline Nancy B. Hamon Recital Hall, Winspear Opera House, Dallas Arts District Sunday, March 20, 2011, 2:30 & 7:30 pm with Theatre Three Encounter untrammeled creative spirits, as the Arts District Chorale and Theatre Three usher in works by the most un-compromising advocates of the innovative and untried. Here are the burning masterworks of passionate artists deter-mined to make something new and to make it grand, whatever the cost. Stand at the very edge of 18th-century Enlight-enment and feel the winds of change sweep through the harrowing words and brilliant music of Romantics like Tolstoy, George Sand, Chopin and Liszt. Held at the Nancy B. Hamon Recital Hall, this is a performance filled to the brim with magnificent art, music and the essence of ardent curiosity. Led by Michie Akin, Artistic Director. Event IV: Broken Boundaries and Ancient Lands Grand Hall, Texas Discovery Gardens, State Fair Park Sunday, May 15, 2011, 2:30 pm and Chautauqua Auditorium, Getzendaner Park, Waxahachie Sunday, May 22, 2011, 3:00 pm Those who came to the New World faced a land outside their history. The glimpse of a dark and strange Unknown al-ways stirs the deepest fears. Only the bravest will step across supposedly safe and self-imposed boundaries. In this breathtaking presentation, the Arts District Chorale explores the visionary beauty of our earliest explorations. Perfectly staged at the Texas Discovery Gardens, a venue that showcases our native landscape, and again at the venerable Waxahachie Chautauqua Auditorium, the Arts District Chorale offers a masterful interpretation and portrayal of wider, wilder lands through the songs, stories, and drumbeats—the unfamiliar and largely unknown ancient Americas. Led by Michie Akin, Artistic Director.

THE 2010-2011 ROBERT T. ANDERSON RECITAL SERIES

Celebrating the legacy of Dr. Robert T. Anderson (1934-2009) - master teacher, brilliant performer, champion of the “king of instruments” and its vast repertoire — this series brings the very finest na-

tional and international artists to Dallas to perform on the city’s many noted pipe organs.

All recitals start at 7:30 p.m. – doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets: $10 & $5 (seniors/students with ID)

With her idiomatic style and her solid technique, Isabelle Demers is an artist outside the norms, or dare I say, beyond any competition.”

— Les Amis de l’orgue, Quebec City Monday, January 24, 2011 BÁLINT KAROSI The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration Richards, Fowkes & Co, Opus 17 (2010), 3 manuals, 47 stops/68 ranks 14115 Hillcrest Road at Spring Valley Road • Dallas, Texas 75254 “With his customary flair and ease, Bálint Karosi launched Johann Sebastian Bach’s festive Prelude and Fugue in C on its propulsive way through an intertwined pedal and manual fabric that drew overt sighs of pleasure from the listeners.”

— The Boston Musical Intelligencer Monday, March 14, 2011 ROBERT PARKINS University Park United Methodist Church Alfred Kern (1978), 3 manuals, 46 stops/69 ranks 4024 Caruth Boulevard at Preston Road • Dallas, Texas 75225 “… Robert Parkins collars loftiest homage for his distinct rhythmic motion and contour …. New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving

Opens 2010-2011 Series

Celebrating Mexico’s 200th Anniversary of Independence

The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving opens its concert season October 2 and 3 with a double-barreled celebration of Mexico’s independence. The or-chestra’s celebration includes new music by a contemporary Mexican com-poser.

The first concert--“Celebrating Mexico!”--will be Saturday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. at Dallas’ Latino Cultural Cen-

ter, 2600 Live Oak Street. Sunday, Oct. 3, at 3:30 p.m., the orchestra opens its “Sundays at the Symphony” con-cert series at the Irving Arts Center with “Latino Connections III.” That performance continues the orchestra’s tradition of presenting one concert each year of orchestral music from Latin countries.

For these performances, Dr. Sergio Espinosa, the orchestra’s conductor, has chosen music entirely by

Mexican composers. The works include music from Revueltas’ film score for “Redes” (Nets) , Moncayo’s “Huapango” based on the dancing rhythms of Veracruz, “Invocation” by contemporary Mexican composer Charly Daniels, and Chavez’s “Sinfonia India.”

Born in Mexico City in 1985, Daniels studied musical composition at the CIEM (Center Musical Studies and

Research). Since 2005, there has been a premiere of at least one of his compositions each year. He has worked with some of the city’s most prestigious contemporary music ensembles, such as the Mex-

ico City Woodwind Quintet, Signos Ensemble, Ensamble Tres, Cuarteto Extremo, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City.

Daniels has also worked as a popular music percussionist, most notably in the world-fusion group

“Kromata,” playing congas, darbouka and bodhrán, and also in the Son Jarocho group “Son La Fábula,” playing mainly cajón, and releasing the first album of the band “Tal y Como Son.”

Dr. Espinosa serves on the faculty of The University of Texas at Arlington and is senior music examiner

for the International Baccalaureate Organization in Wales, UK. Born in Mexico, he studied there, in Switzerland and in New York.

He holds a doctorate in orchestral conducting from the University of Iowa, and wrote his doctoral disserta-

tion on Revueltas’ music for “Redes.” As a violinist Dr. Espinosa has performed in Spain, France and the United States.

The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving is a community orchestra, made up of trained musicians who

choose to continue to play while they serve in other professions: teaching, accounting, computer programming, film-making and others. Since 1988, the orchestra has served audiences from Irving and throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

The October 2 concert is presented in partnership with the Latino Cultural Center, City of Dallas Office of

Cultural Affairs and the Mexican Consulate, with support from companies including Interceramic USA, Bandito’s Cantina, Pender’s Music, D’Hierro and La Calle Doce Restaurants, as part of the area’s bicentennial celebrations.

Tickets October 2 are $10 ($5 for DISD and DCCCD students). For the October 3 concert at the Irving

Arts Center, general admission tickets range from $8 to $15. For tickets to either event, call 972-252-ARTS (2787) or order online at www.IrvingArtsCenter.com. For more information, visit the orchestra’s Web site at www.npoirving.com.

What is Cooperative Arts News?

The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list members with news of member organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest. The Rules: 1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who

would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager.

2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list.

If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely manner. As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area! Regards, David Witherspoon List Manager d-witherspoon@ti.com
