In 2004, ILFORD Imaging is celebrating 125 yearsof photographic manufacturing.

From humble beginnings, when Alfred Hugh Harmanbegan making Gelatine Dry Plates in the basementof his house in Cranbrook Road, Ilford, Essex,to today’s global manufacture of the world’s leadinginkjet technology, imagery and photography havealways been at the heart of the matter.

Photography is apparent wherever we look.It is almost impossible to get through the daywithout some contact with a photographic image.The photo can be used to record everything froma personal record of our past to becomingan Icon of an era.

It is hard to imagine a world without images,but even harder to believe that 125 years ago,in the formative years of photography, the electriclight had not been invented.

This made these early days of Photography,quite literally, the dark ages, with photographersrelying on gaslight and natural sunlight to exposeand process their images. It would be several yearsbefore electricity was available to even a minorityof the world’s population.

As we look around our world today, there areso many familiar, everyday items that we take forgranted that simply would not have existed in 1879;the automobile, telephone and even the humble

zipper were not to be imaginable for many yearsto come.

Just as photography has become part of oureveryday lives, so many other items that we nowtake for granted have come into existence in thepast century and a quarter.

This calendar takes a look at some of thesetechnological underdogs and at many of the eventsthat have shaped the past 125 years, all of whichhave been captured photographically and are partof a heritage that ILFORD Imaging is proud to bea major part of.
