D Bm Uilleann piper Seamus Ennis was of the opinion this tune was the very
best of Irish reels. He was once asked what tune might appropriately
follow it in a medley, and after thinking a bit he remarked,
"You cant play anything after the Bucks!"

During the Battle of Aughrim, a force of Jacobite cavalry under Henry
Luttrell was held in reserve to cover the Irish flank. However, rather
than counterattacking, their commander ordered them to withdraw,
following a route now known locally as "Luttrell's pass".
Henry Luttrell was alleged to have been in the pay of the British
Williamites and was assassinated in Dublin after the war.

"O I forbid you, maidens a', That wear gowd on your hair,
To come or gae by Carterhaugh, For young Tam Lin is there."
Tam Lin is the Scottish borderland ballad of a young man, captured for
years by the Queen of the Faeries, until he met a young maiden, Janet,
who was able to break the Queen's spell and win Tam Lin from her.

Variations
Francis O'Neill (1848-1936) was an Irish-born American (who became
Chief of Chicago Police), flute player, and collector of Irish
traditional music. This was a tune he collected from fiddler Edward
Cronin, who named it after the Chief. Two of his compilations included
"O'Neill's Music of Ireland" (1903), containing 1,850 pieces of music,
and "The Dance Music of Ireland" (1907), sometimes called
"O'Neill's 1001," because of the number of tunes included.
