“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”

#CrazyOKC

Why is innovation crazy?

You bring change.

People resist change.

∴ , People will resist you.

#CrazyOKC

Today’s Goal:

Inspire some crazy.

My Crazy Story (so far)

#CrazyOKC

A Few Vignettes

1.Opportunity Missed

2.The Value of Thinking Big

3.Creating Your Path

#CrazyOKC

#1: Opportunity Missed

• Graduated Penn in 2005 and took an

entry level role at BCG; money was

tight.

• Problem: I needed an easy way to

track and manage my finances.

• Solution: Excel.

#CrazyOKC

#CrazyOKC

#CrazyOKC

One day, I showed my friend...

• She asked for a copy of the

spreadsheet

• I begrudgingly copied it, deleted my

data and shared it with her.

• Then, another colleague asked. And

another. I ignored them. I was busy.

#CrazyOKC

#CrazyOKC

#CrazyOKC

Why Didn’t I Build It?

1. Focus: Working 70 hours / week as a management consultant

2. Fear: Of criticism, ridicule, obligation

3. I Didn’t LISTEN: The market was telling me there was a need.

#CrazyOKC

Why do you WORK ?

Loveor

Money

#CrazyOKC

“The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.

And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.

Don't settle. ”

Stanford Commencement Speech

#CrazyOKC

The Cost of Not Doing What You Love

#CrazyOKC

#2: The Value of Thinking Big

#CrazyOKC

The Challenge

• Problem: I want live video everywhere.

• Attempt 1: Put cameras everywhere.

Cost = $1 Trillion +.

• Attempt 2: Moving cameras in mobile

command centers. Too slow / unscalable.

• Attempt 3: Moving camera cars.

#CrazyOKC

#CrazyOKC

The Challenge, Part II

• Problem: Cost

• Solution 1: Technological Innovation

• Solution 2: Kill 3 birds with one stone

(and many smaller incremental

solutions along the way)

Lessons Learned

1. Innovation can happen in big companies

2. Great leaders define problems and

challenge you to generate solutions

3. Seek adjacent problems to expand impact

4. You can make a big impact quickly

#CrazyOKC

Creating Your Path

• Problem: I wanted to work more on

core product development and grow

into a GM. Google required a CS

degree to be a product manager,

didn’t have GMs.

#CrazyOKC

The Spark

#CrazyOKC

Keys to Creating Your Path

1. Pick your boss wisely

2. Seek unique opportunities

3. Know your goals and the company’s.

Put the company’s first.

4. Work hard.

#CrazyOKC

A Note on Working Hard

9 to 5 is dead. Think in expert cycles.

The Impact of 10,000 Hours(Experience)

• Consider Mike and Sheryl–Mike works 40 hour weeks (2k hrs/year)– Sheryl works 60 hour weeks (3k hrs/yr)
