CREATING GOOGLE ALERTS TO KEEP INFORMED ON SPECIFIC TOPICS

In any Google product, select More > Even more at the top and get here :

Step 1 - easy search query – Use :

Quotes symbol around words to get these words exactly in that order, excluding synonyms and variations
The – sign to exclude certain words : eg Eiffel –Tower will exclude results about Eiffel
that mention the famed Tower (note there is no space after the – sign)
site: with site name (eg site:twitter.com) to include or exclude results from specific sites
Use basic boolean search such as AND, OR and ()
Step 2 : results type : select where/which kind of data you want

Step 3 : How often : as it happens, once a day, once a week

Final step : how many and delivery

I recommend choosing “only the best results” as it reduces the number of results to something manageable.
As far as where you can receive the results of the alerts, decide based on what suits you best : either in your Reader, or in your email.
Click Create Alert and you’re done
