Proof of this is best demonstrated by our 45 years of successful built projects, which span whole-city masterplans to individual homes both in the UK and abroad. Our education design portfolio includes Secondary, Primary and University level learning spaces, including emerging models for all-through schools, free schools and child-centred learning environments.

Rosendale Primary SchoolWest Dulwich London

This project is a sensitive refurbishment of a typical Victorian London Board School. Like many schools of this era the classrooms suffer from poor layout, visual clutter and discomfort in hot and cold weather. Our proposal creates discretely designed additional storage and a focal childrens’ reading corner in each room. Solar shading is provided by a new external timber pergola and high performance roof lights increase each classroom’s natural daylight levels.

Shenley AcademyBirmingham

Shenley Academy and sixth form centre is a new-build school for 1,150 eleven to eighteen year olds. We have worked hard with client and contractor to turn the complex brief into a strong clear layout with classrooms clustered around six learning centres and a new theatre and sports hall flanking external courts to the south. These larger facilities have been carefully located to encourage out-of-hours use by the local community. The large scale windows give views over the landscaped grounds, allow natural light into the classrooms and work with the cladding panels and brickwork to form a striking building facade.

Torriano Junior SchoolCamden London

This elegant building houses the school’s vibrant range of musical and theatrical pursuits in a new first floor hall. The gatehouse’s distinctive roof is designed to reduce energy consumption by aiding natural ventilation and the hall space can be divided into two separate rooms if required. Robust and traditional external materials marry well with the surrounding context and the location of the building on the site’s boundary means it creates a real sense of arrival into the school.

We worked in close collaboration with the client and contractor in this BSF project to transform the existing school’s confusing layout and outdated facilities into a clear sequence of enjoyable and coherent new spaces. The design allies new facilities including a four court sports hall, reception area, enterprise café and conference suite with improvements to the retained school building to meet current standards. The school colours of green and gold are used as a palette for the cladding of the new entrance building and a number of new internal elements.

Millennium Primary SchoolGreenwich Peninsula London

Greenwich is a new-build two form primary school for 420 pupils which was conceived as one part of a mixed use scheme, the other being a new health centre. The interior of the school features a series of distinctive coloured ‘drums’ which contain light wells and group learning spaces adjacent to individual classrooms. The building looks over beautifully landscaped grounds and is designed be heated and cooled by passive means, cutting down on energy use.

Prefabricated Primary School Solutions

We are currently developing designs for a new type of primary school, one that aims to minimise costs while making elegant, flexible spaces for teaching. In collaboration with leading structural and environmental engineers we have developed a proposal that is compact, energy efficient, easily constructed and in line with stringent government cost targets. The prefabricated timber design features a main hall which can be used by the local community, shared teaching rooms and areas for sheltered external play.
