From Walt Disney’s 1954 film adaptation of Jules Vernes’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea to Jaws to The Titanic, the ocean has captured the imagination of generations through film. A human fascination as old as Homer’s The Odyssey, film taps into our visual nature transporting us to an oceanic world as strange to us as it is familiar. Dr. Michael Gillespie will discuss the impact of film on our cultural perceptions of the ocean. Through tales of journeys, natural disasters, and exploration, film holds a mirror to our own anxieties over identity, uncertainty in the face of nature’s mysteries, and hopes for the future.
