FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
This is the last newsletter for the year and therefore contains information that I am sure you are all looking forward to seeing. I am very aware that many people have been talking about what the school structure might be like next year. There have been rumours and speculation about this, but interestingly this has only been “finalized” in the last couple of days. Please note that even though this information is “finalized”, it is still a draft and, given what has happened over the last few weeks, could very likely change over the holidays. If this happens I would keep you informed. There have been a number of “interesting” factors that has meant the plans have been shifting, sometimes on a daily basis! While this can be frustrating, I am confident we have, in the end, a great teaching team who will cater for the needs of the children, whatever class they are in. This process is not easy as we can’t please everyone, we are limited with our resources, we have large numbers in certain year groups and we need to think of the big picture. My aim, as a leader of the school, is to “do the right thing” (even when it’s hard), whereas a manager would rather “do things right.” Staffing – Each year the Ministry uses a formula and provides us with beginning of the year staffing (teaching) based on the number of children we have at our school. This is reviewed with roll returns twice a year. For the beginning of 2017 we have the following staffing: Room 1 – Year 0/1 Kennys Pester Room 2 – Year 3/4 Ros Stringfellow Room 3 – Year 1/2 Kathryn Winson / Carolyn Smith Room 5 – Year 4/5 Linda Falconer/ Hannah Scott Room 4 – Year 5/6 Eddie Foskett Library / Room 6 – Year 7 AnnMaree Schuyt / Robert Schuyt Room 6 / Library – Year 8 Miriam Bell / Robert Schuyt Classes – At the same time we are looking at our staffing, we also think about classes and how children will fit into this model. This is always an interesting process. With our allocated staffing, we could not retain 6 classes and have 37 in the Year 7/8 class (with no flexibility for new children in this area). So, the decision was made to split the Year 7 and 8’s into two smaller classes, but work together collaboratively – aligning the classroom programme as much as possible. We will be exploring and implementing teaching programmes, as we have done this year, which will ensure children’s needs are met. If there are any questions, please come and talk to me first.
Today we also celebrate our children’s progress and achievement by sending home the end of year reports and portfolios. Please take your time to read it, discuss it with your children and if you wish, staff are available to discuss these with you further. Whilst the reports reflect individual progress and achievement, part of my job is to look at the big picture – school wide needs. On Wednesday I reported to the BOT on student achievement over the year. I have mentioned some results in earlier newsletters and while there are small pockets of children and of the curriculum I think we need to work on, overall the results are very good. We do have a very high percentage of children achieving at or above their expected levels. Writing: Cust School End of Year: At / Above Standard 88% National Data At / Above 71% Maths: Cust School End of Year: At / Above Standard 83% National Data At / Above 75% Reading:
Cust School End of Year: At / Above Standard 87%
National Data At / Above 78% Included in this newsletter is the timetable for the End of Year Assembly/Prize Giving. There is an expectation that children (and families) attend this. For new families to Cust School each year we hold our annual End of Year Assembly at Cust School in the last week of term. We hold it at school, as the Year 8’s, who are a special part of this assembly, want to celebrate their time here – for some 8 years! The assembly includes speeches and presentations. It is a neat way to finish the year and is quite relaxed. Everyone is welcome to come – as mentioned above there is an expectation that children (and families) attend. Children need to be in school uniform. And to end a Christmas Joke: Q: What do you call an elf who sings? A: A wrapper! Merry Christmas, happy New Year and have a very safe and enjoyable holiday. Robert Schuyt THANK YOU AND MERRY CHRISTMAS The teaching and support staff would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy, safe new year. Thank you all for the support you have given us throughout the year.
SCHOOL CLOSES Tuesday, 20 December at 12.30pm. Bus children will leave at this time as well.

stage during the year and purchase other items you may need.
Cust School benefits from each sale by earning itself a 10% rebate, which will go directly to the school. This is a great
opportunity to get your school stationery ordered before Christmas and be able to pick a date that it is delivered to your door!

REPORT FROM THE BOT CHAIR
“Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa”
We all benefit when we work together
This week, the Cust School Board of Trustees held our December meeting – the final meeting of the year. We started the meeting with a discussion of how best to report back to the community the results of the survey which contributed to our new and exciting Strategic Plan for Cust School. As I have previously mentioned, the BOT members have spent several hours analyzing, discussing and collating the results of the community survey and we have worked hard to integrate to common themes and trends into our new Strategic Plan. We are proud of the plan and think it spells out an exciting vision for Cust School in the years to come and want to share this with the school community. At our Final Prize Giving Assembly, I will be sharing the three strategic goals that came out of the survey. As well, early in 2017 we will be holding an open / public meeting to formally share this vision for the school and answer any questions that may arise. Stay tuned...... We then heard a final report back from Robert regarding the academic progress of our students, the areas where we have progressed and the areas that will continue to be developed and strengthened in 2017 and beyond. Needless to say, we continue to excel with our results and the effort and attention that the staff put into supporting and knowing each individual learner is quite impressive. We formally endorsed the staffing plan for 2017. This will be released soon and the BOT is confident that the plan that has been put in place is the very best option available and is designed entirely based on the needs of the students. There are a couple of projects that will be taking place (we hope) over the summer; the beginning of the playground upgrade and the modernization of Block 1. The PTA has begun the process of upgrading the playground and have ordered the first new piece of equipment: a swing set. Many thanks to the PTA for the considerable time, effort and commitment that they have shown in fundraising, planning and supporting our students and school – they are an excellent example of the best that communities have to offer. As well, we have received final MOE approval for the go-ahead to modernize Block 1. This will see a ‘break-out’ space added to the back of Block 1. This addition will provide more and alternative learning spaces while still retaining the traditional character of our single-cell classrooms. Rest assured: we are NOT taking out any walls!!!!! If you, like I, were fortunate enough to attend assembly on Wednesday morning this week, you would have seen our amazing new Kapahaka outfits on display when the students shared with us their Haka and Waiata. Tino Pai tamariki. I wish everyone a safe, happy and relaxing holiday season; may it be filled with memorable family times, adventures and a bit of swimming and sun. Thank you to the teachers, staff, children, parents, caregivers and families of Cust school, all of your contributions and efforts contribute to this wonderful school at the heart of the community. Tim Heidmann BOT Chair
HEADLICE Please take the opportunity over the holidays to check and treat your child(ren) if necessary as head lice is back at school. Thank you. LOST PROPERTY Please check the red lost property box on the verandah by the staffroom as there is a lot of clothing that has been left around. It will be disposed of before the new school year starts back.
