SCHOLARLY INTERESTS
1) Sustainability theory - development of theory that 1) elucidates patterns of economic incentives that undermine sustainability by privileging market over non-market goods and services creating selection pressures leading to the commoditization of virtually everything and 2) explores ways to promote economic behavior that fosters reciprocal relations between economic and ecological systems based on the principles of scientific Ecology and traditional environmental knowledge.
2) Qualitative Social Science - application of qualitative social science in the tradition of Symbolic Interactionism and participant observation to characterize
3
and analyze the social construction of meaning by participants within institutions engaged in making and contesting environmental decisions, particularly in science-based collaborative decision processes.
3) Great Lakes Studies –concentration on the Laurentian Great Lakes, with emphasis on the social construction of science and the institutions responsible for sustainable management of Great Lakes resources and the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes basin ecosystem, including the ancestral homeland of the Onondaga Nation.
