JJamaica’s shopping
can be as hot and
delightful as its
tropical sun. You
may be surprised
to learn that more
than 75 percent of
visitors go duty-free
shopping, purchas-
ing jewelry, perfume,
watches, crystal,
leather goods and
liquor as the most
popular items.

Why is it such a big industry
(US$120 million-a-year), you may won-
der? Start with significant savings.
You can literally shop till you drop (on
the nearest beach) because duty-free,
tax-free prices are 20 to 60 percent less
than U.S. prices. Then there’s service.
Knowledgeable and friendly Jamaican
jewelers make it easy to fit you to some-
thing comfortable — like a dazzling
diamond or designer watch, in no time.
“Once people discover what we
have to offer, they come back to us
again and again,” says Kumar Samtani,
president of the Duty Free Association
of Jamaica. “After all, this is a business
of trust, of merchants standing behind
their merchandise.”
Oh the joy of exploring Jamaica’s
fine shops! You can choose from more
product in one location than you may
see in a lifetime. With showcase after
showcase of designer jewelry and
watches, French perfumes and fine
crystal, it may be beyond your imagi-
nation, so where do you start? Start
with this publication, where you’ll find
accurate information, reliable mer-
chants and pages of interesting adver-
tisements. Visit the plazas and browse.
Make a plan and don’t be misdirected
by taxi or bus drivers.
And remember that shopping is
for all to enjoy. “One of the wonderful
things about Jamaica is couples can
relax. Everyone feels like a newly-
wed,” says Samtani. “They have time
together that they don’t have at home
— time to choose gifts for each other
and to make memories.”
Consider one of the fine duty-free
stores in Ocho Rios. A couple sips a lit-
tle cognac. The shop owner brings his
jeweler’s loupe and invites them to
take a closer look. The diamond is cut
so exquisitely, it has nearly twice as
many facets as any they have ever
seen. In another shop, the owner con-
siders introducing a new gemstone to
the Caribbean. This fiery opal is ablaze
with the oranges and yellows you
would see in a brilliant sunrise. In
Montego Bay, a honeymooner studies
a sporty bracelet of titanium and gold.
But a pair of filigreed earrings catches
her eye — earrings so highly styled
she would expect to see them in Vogue.
Her friend surveys the many perfumes
that line shelf after shelf, including the
favorite fragrances of her mom, her
kids, and her aunt. In Jamaica, they
sell for 20-30 percent less than in the
U.S. or Europe.
Follow the savvy shoppers to
the numerous stores in and around
Jamaica’s favorite tourist destinations.
(Editor’s note: We know these mer-
chants. They guarantee quality mer-
chandise and good service.)
If you’re dreaming of a watch that
sells for $6,200 in the U.S. — you will
find it in Jamaica for much less. “It
may be the savings on watches that
astounds my customers most,” con-
tinues the jeweler. “Movado time-
pieces are available here for 50
percent less than in the U.S.”
Heard about the watch Madonna
gave Oprah? The Philip Stein, credited
not only with keeping good time, but
also with shielding you from the elec-
tronic static of computers and cell
phones, is available here duty-free.
Jamaican jewelers do more than
help you keep time. They help you
get married. Each year thousands of
visitors get engaged here, More come
to marry. So what about the ring?
White and black diamonds, canary yel-
low diamonds, the pink and blue batu
sari diamonds made famous by John
Hardy’s Balinese collection: all are
available in glorious profusion here.
Hearts on Fire diamonds — a line cut
so that eight hearts are visible in the
stone — can be found here. So can
Gabrielle Diamonds, with their extra-
ordinary faceting by one of the world’s
most famous diamond cutting families,
the Tolkowskys. A ring costing $9,500
in the U.S. can be found at House of
Diamonds in Ocho Rios for about
US$5,000. Your savings could pay for

your entire honeymoon.
A couple ready for a classic three-
stone diamond anniversary ring will find
it here as well. Anniversary rings also come
set with opals or pink mother of pearl.
Bring on the pearls: white ones,
black ones and flesh tones. Maybe the
grays are the subtlest of all. Top-of-
the-line Mikimoto pearls come duty-
free. A strand that costs US$5,100 in
the U.S. and Europe can be found for
about US$3,500. Still haven’t found the
thing that strikes just the right note?
Who crafts these unique pieces?
The Italian geniuses of Carrera y
Carrera and the famous Harry Winston
are two. A Neiman Marcus favorite,
John Hardy, has his jewelry made in
Bali, where it takes an hour for an artist
to complete one inch of the signature
braid of precious metals. Judith Jack
is for those who love marcasite. The
work of Wendy Brigade is less well
known, since much of it goes to pri-
vate clients such as Kevin Costner and
Rene Russo. While watching a film
starring Ms. Russo, one Jamaican jew-
eler knew he had to find the creator
of a certain pearl necklace. “Wendy
Brigade doesn’t work with many retail-
ers. I am absolutely delighted to be able
to present her,” he says.
Shops have showcase after show-
case of glittering gold and silver
chains. And don’t forget handbags.
Chopard bags, with butterfly wings
embossed over pastel leathers, start at
US$800. In Europe or the U.S. they
would be 25 percent higher.
There are more fine things: Mont
Blanc pens, glassware, porcelain and
crystal. Several of the stores include
such goodies. Crystal is Bijoux territo-
ry. One duty-free jeweler explains, “In
the last few years crystal jewelry has
come into its own.” Lalique and
Baccarat bracelets, butterfly brooches
and red heart pendants are irresistible.
Something at Bijoux will surely make
you laugh or cry — a Lladró clown, a
school of Lalique angel fish in mad
pinks and teals, or that Daum glass
vase in greens and lavenders so subtle
that it must have been sketched by
the impressionist Claude Monet. Plus,
there are vases and wine glasses by
Baccarat, Swarovski and Waterford.
Fragrances are also popular. You’ll
find almost everything from Anne
Klein to Calvin Klein duty-free. Classics
such as Chanel #5 are here in abun-
dance. Perfumes, eaux de toilette, even
gift boxes are available duty-free in
Jamaica, discounted 30-40 percent.
How did this business begin?
A patriarch of the duty-free market
remembers a time when “there were
only 20 or 30 cars in Montego Bay. Our
business was almost exclusively sea-
sonal, serving the Rockefellers and
a very few others. As people fell in love
with Jamaica, and tourism grew, so
did our business.”
Give yourself time to enjoy
the shops and have a good look. Get
out of the hotel. No hotel can offer
the depth or breadth of products that
the duty-free shops can.
Montego Bay has two major duty-
free shopping areas. Downtown’s City
Centre is among the premier complexes.
In a one block area, recommended
merchants — Casa de Oro, The Presita
Shops, The Royal Shop, and Tropicana
— display an array of merchandise for
discriminating buyers. The trip is well
worth the few minutes it might take
from some hotels.
Half Moon Shopping Village is
Montego Bay’s most upscale, a short
drive from Half Moon Golf, Tennis
& Beach Club and other hotels in
the Rose Hall area. The architectural
design, with domed turrets, brick
walkways and luxurious landscaping,
stands against the backdrop of the blue
sea. At Half Moon you’ll find several
duty-free stores — Bijoux, Casa de Oro,

Tajmahal’s and Tropicana — as well
as linen shops, boutiques, even a store
devoted to Bob Marley. Half Moon
Shopping Village also has a pub to
rival any in Mother England.
Not far away in the tourist area is
Blue Diamond Shopping Centre home
to a movie theatre, supermarket and
Rainbow Souvenirs & Jewellers spe-
cializing in jewelry, liquor, cigars, cof-
fee and spices.
Even more shopping is available
at Swiss Stores on Gloucester Avenue
(the Hip Strip), which also has bou-
tiques and souvenir shops. Pick up last
minute gifts such as spices and coffee
at the airport. Things Jamaican offers
authentic gifts and crafts; take home
popular international and domestic
liquors (savings up to 50 percent) at
Jamaica Farewell. Bijoux Jewellers also
has a store at the airport.
Ocho Rios also provides several
important shopping areas. Soni’s Plaza,
on Main Street in the heart of town, is
especially bustling on cruise ship days.
Here you will find a number of the
prestigious recommended duty-free
shops such as Casa de Oro, Colors
Jewellers and House of Diamonds.
A little west on Main Street, in the
center of town, is Swiss Stores at Ocean
Village. Farther west on Main Street,
opposite Turtle Towers, is Tajmahal
Shopping Centre, with the domed roof
of its namesake. Its unique design will
attract your eye, as will its dozens of
shops, including the new Hard Rock
Café with retail store on the ground
level. Like Soni’s, Tajmahal is busy,
especially on days when cruise ships
are in port. Duty-free stores here
include Bijoux Jewellers, Colors
Jewellers, House of Diamonds, Jewels
& Time, The Royal Shop, Tajmahal’s
and Tropicana.
Adjacent to the cruise-ship pier is
the spacious Island Village, as much an

BEST AND BRIGHTEST...WHICH are the world’s most famousdiamonds? These glittering stonesare spectacular enough to make theirappearance regularly among top-tenlists of diamonds.
1. Koh-I-Noor (“Mountain OfLight”) a 105.6 carat diamond datingto 1304, this stone may have the mostancient history of all. The Koh-I-Nooris originally from India. Legend has itthe stone was part of the throne ofShah Jehan, before being presentedto Queen Victoria. It is currently partof the British Crown jewels.
2. The Great Star of Africa isthe largest of the stones cut from themother of all diamonds, the 3,106-carat Cullinan. It adorned the sceptreof King Edward VII and now rests inthe Tower of London along with therest of the British Crown Jewels.
3. The Centenary is the world’slargest flawless, colorless,modern-cut diamond.Master diamondcutter GabiTolkowsky andhis team spentnearly threeyears cuttingthe stone. In1999, the Cen-tenary was soldto an anonymousbuyer for a sum esti-mated at $90-$100 mil-lion. No one has seen thediamond since.
4. The Sancy, weighing in at 55carats, has a most illustrious history.Discovered in India, the stone hadmade its way to Constantinople by1570. It has been owned by England’sroyal Stuarts, France’s King Louis XIV,Russia’s Prince Demidoff, and in moremodern times, England’s Lady Astor,to name but a few. Today it is dis-played in Paris’ Louvre museum.
5. The Regent weighed in at 410carats in the rough. It was first pur-chased by British Prime MinisterWilliam Pitt. Before too long the gemwas in the hands of the French, orrather in the crown of their king. Afterthe French Revolution, Napoleon setthe stone into his sword. Today, thediamond rests at the Louvre museum.
6. A flattened, pear-shaped dia-mond weighing 70.20 carats is known
as The idol’s Eye. Legend has it thestone was actually set in the eye of anidol. Another tale tells of the Sheik ofKashmir using the gem to ransom abeloved princess. More recently thestone has been in the hands of DenverPost heiress May Bonfils Stanlon.
7. The mysterious Blue Hope(pictured), a 45.52-carat diamond, issaid to carry a curse. Once the dia-mond belonged to France’s King LouisXIV and was known as the “blue dia-mond of the crown.” The Hope dia-mond picked up its accursed reputa-tion after being stolen during theFrench Revolution. Henry Philip Hopebought the stone after it turned up inLondon in 1830. As the story goes, allwho have owned the diamond, fromthe Hope family on have suffered mis-fortune. Today, the stone is on perma-nent display at the Smithsonian Institu-
tion, in Washington, D.C.8. The Golden
Jubilee is a wonderof the modern dia-
mond world. Anintense yellow-brown 545.67-carat diamond(approximatelythe size of a
baseball), theGolden Jubilee
was presented toThailand’s King Bhumibol
Adulyadej in honor of his 50thyear on the throne. Currently, theGolden Jubilee diamond is mountedin the Thai Royal Sceptre.
9. The Taylor-Burton Diamondrecalls one of the great romances ofthe 20th Century between Richard Bur-ton and Elizabeth Taylor. Burton pre-sented the 69.42-carat pear-shapeddiamond to his beloved. After the Tay-lor-Burton split, Elizabeth Taylor soldthe diamond to raise money for a hos-pital in Botswana.
10. Rumored to have been stolenout of the eye of a god in an ancientHindu temple, the Orloff Diamondweighs 186.60 carats. The world’sfourth largest diamond was finallypresented to Russia’s Catherine theGreat.Today, the Orloff can be foundamong the treasures in the RussianDiamond Fund.— Courtesy of House of Diamonds

Do YouKnowYour
FourC’s?A diamond is a highly
refractive, colorless crystalline
allotrope of carbon used in its
purest form as gemstones. It is
earth’s hardest naturally occur-
ing substance.
Each diamond is graded
according to the four C’s
(carat, color, clarity and cut)
which influence the price. A
carat, equal to 200 milligrams,
describes the unit
of weight of the stone.
Diamonds come in a rainbow
of colors. Usually colored dia-
monds are rarer than white
diamonds, and some, like pink
diamonds are very expensive.
Clarity refers to inclusions,
flaws and identifying character-
istics such as crystals, clouds or
feathers.
Of course, the clearer the
stone, the higher the value.
Cut describes the angle, pro-
portion and shape of the dia-
mond. For example, there are
round and princess cuts (the
most popular cuts) as well as
marquis and oval. Ask ques-
tions then decide what factors
are most important to you.
Merchants can provide a loupe
to magnify the stone for
inspection. Remember, dia-
monds are a girl’s best friend.

Next time you are in
Jamaica and are buying gifts
you may want to take advan-
tage of duty-free savings on
liquors. U.S. citizens are
allowed one liter of liquor
duty-free when leaving
Jamaica and a second liter
can be brought into the U.S.
duty-free if locally produced
by a Caribbean Basin nation.
Other visitors should check
with Customs for more infor-
mation.
Some Jamaican liquor
such as Tia Maria can be pur-
chased at a saving of nearly
50 percent. This saving lets
you buy the liquor at a two
for one special or a “twofer”
as they say in Jamaica.
Popular brands of rum such
as Appleton can also be
bought at substantial savings
as well as other types of alco-
holic beverages like vodka
and wines. Prices vary island-
wide at many duty-free shops
so it pays to shop around.
