HEALTHBudget may announce steps to boost exports, revive SEZs

NEW DELHI, Feb 28:

Finance Minister ArunJaitley may announce in theBudget tomorrow certainsteps like extending the bene-fit of interest subsidy schemeto more sectors to boostexports, which have been inthe negative zone sinceDecember 2014.

It may also look into thedemands of SEZ players whohave sought reduction or evenremove the minimum alterna-tive tax (MAT).

Apex exporters body FIEOsaid that they expect severalsteps in the Budget for boost-ing exports.

“I expect that the FinanceMinister would extend the 3per cent interest subsidyscheme benefit to merchantexporters and steps to reducetransactions cost which is alsoimpacting exports,” Federationof Indian Export Organisations(FIEO) Director General AjaySahai said.

Exports dipped for the

14th month in a row, down13.6 per cent in January toUSD 21 billion due to fall inshipments of petroleum andengineering goods, althoughtrade deficit showed improve-ment.

The Commerce Ministryhas strongly pitched forremoval of MAT (18.5 percent) on SEZs as it hasimpacted the growth of thesezones.

During April-Septemberthis fiscal, exports from thesezones stood at Rs 2.21 lakhcrore as against Rs 4.63 lakhcrore in 2014-15.

Besides, it has suggestedthat the sunset clause shouldnot be invoked for SEZs as itwould have adverse bearingon exports from these zones.

The Central Board ofDirect Taxes (CBDT) had lastyear proposed removal offacilities and incentives toSEZs by March 31, 2017.These zones contribute about25 per cent in the country’stotal exports. (PTI)
