The soap opera ofan amazing childDear Fia,You are just days away
from turning six. How didthat happen? I really didn’tbelieve people when they saidthat time would go so quickly, but everyone who warned mewas right. It makes me bothhappy and sad that you aregrowing up so quickly.Happy because I love the girlyou are and love seeing theperson you are becoming. Ihave such little patience; Ireally want to see the futurenow. On the other hand, itmakes me sad because 6seems so old. You have longpassed infancy, gown out oftoddler and preschoolerstages. Every trace of babyhas been washed awayreplaced with your big kidfreckled face.
The big thing this past yearwas you started kindergarten. You transitioned so effortless-ly from a small intimateschool of 6 to a classroomwith 20 plus other children. You easily found your wayand have made so many nicefriends, some of whom I think
will be by your side for manymany years. You are anexcellent student and love tobe the teacher’s helper. Youalso love school so much andoften declare you are sad onthe weekend because youcan’t go. To fill the void, weplay school at home, a lot.In fact you love to play.
When I ask you what youwant to do, you say play. Toyou play means countlesshours full of stories, ideas andimaginary worlds. Yourimagination is endless and sopure. You love to be thewriter and director of our playtimes. I am given a part inyour soap opera, lines to sayand if I misspeak, you remindme of how the script is writtenin your head. You are always

E-books soar in popularity
NEWS
One in fiveAmerican adults read an electronic book in the lastyear, as gift-giving sped the shift away from the printed page, aPew Research Center survey showed on Wednesday. In a sweeping survey of e-books' impact on reading habits, the
Pew report said that four times more U.S. readers, or 15 percent, were reading e-books on a typical day now compared with lessthan two years ago.But when it comes to reading in bed, the verdict is split. Forty-
five percent of those surveyed preferred e-books and 43 percentgave the nod to old-fashioned print.Lee Rainie, the head of the Pew Internet Project, which con-
ducted the survey, said the results underscored huge cultural andpublishing changes as people do more of their book readingonline."People's relationship to books is a central part of culture. So
when that relationship is in transition like it is now, it's an inter-esting thing to mark," he said.

City Councilman FrankHotchkiss pulls supportfor mayor’s proposalsWhen Santa Barbara
Mayor Helene Schneiderannounced her controversialballot proposals in February, she found an unlikely ally inCity Councilman FrankHotchkiss.Hotchkiss, a conservative,
applauded Schneider’s pro-posals and called them“smart” and “courageous.”The liberal mayor touted
Hotchkiss’s praise, citing it asan example of her crossover, conservative support. But that’s all changed.Hotchkiss on Wednesday
told The Daily Sound that hestill applauds Schneider’sefforts, but that he opposesher ballot initiatives.Schneider has proposed ahalf-cent sales tax and a newfee for downtown businessesthat serve alcohol after 11p.m. She also wants to makepolice officers and firefight-ers pay the same amount intotheir public employee pen-sions as the city’s generalemployees.“I don’t think now that a
general tax is the right way toaccrue the money needed toget these things done – partic-ularly a tax with no end insight,” said Councilman
Hotchkiss. “Ingovernment ,once a tax is inplace, it almostnever goesaway. It wouldbe better tocontinue totighten our cityg o v e r nme n tbelt rather thanenact such a tax.”Hotchkiss said most people
who he talks to agree withhim.“As for the matter of
increased retirement contribu-tions, we can enact thisthrough our contract negotia-tions with the unions. And the“club tax” seems ill-con-ceived, as it could uninten-tionally include hotels andrestaurants downtown whichare not the cause of the prob-lem.”Hotchkiss said he no
longer backs the proposals.“After giving them careful
consideration, personally Iwon’t vote for them,”Hotchkiss said.Schneider declined to com-
ment specifically about losingHotchkiss’ support.“I’ve been focusing on
gathering signatures and havefound that Santa Barbara vot-ers are overwhelmingly sup-
portive of placingthese items on theNovember ballot,”Schneider said.Schneider is
currently gather-ing signatures toplace her propos-als on the ballot. She needs 9,000signatures from
Santa Barbara voters to quali-fy them for the Novemberballot. She is paying her sig-nature gathers, but has notdisclosed where the money iscoming from to pay the signa-ture gatherers. The mayor stunned the
political establishment whenshe announced her plan to“Invest in Santa Barbara” inFebruary. Her proposal to force
police officers and firefight-ers to pay 100 percent of theiremployee contributions totheir public employee retire-ment plans goes hand-in-handwith proposal to a half-centincrease in the sales tax. Bothmust pass for either to go intoeffect. She also wants to increase
fees for downtown businessesthat serve alcohol past 11 p.m.because she says they create astrain on public safetyresources.
She recently dropped afourth advisory measure thatshe proposed for the ballotwhich would have allowedsome of the sales tax moneyto go to the Santa BarbaraUnified School District.School officials, however, opposed the timing of hermeasure because they wereconcerned that it would con-flict with two June parcel taxproposals on the ballot.Schneider announced her
proposals with no supportersin attendance. At a recentpublic forum, she also spokealone.Police and fire unions,
SEIU, city, county and manyeducation officials have allbeen taken aback by the pro-posals. Schneider said shespoke to a few key peopleabout the proposals beforegoing forward, but declinedto state whom.Schneider’s uphill battle is
new territory for the mayor, who has lived in SantaBarbara for more than 15years.The mayor is normally
careful, cautious and guarded. In eight years she has rarelyblundered, and she developeda reputation as coalition-builder who valued publicopinion over personal agenda.

Whitney Houston drowned in a hot bathtub in a Beverly Hillshotel room with cocaine in her system and white powder near-by, a final coroner's report revealed on Wednesday.Detectives found white powdery substances, a rolled-up
piece of paper, a small spoon and a mirror in the bathroomshortly after Houston's naked body was found face down in thebathtub on February 11, the 40-page Los Angeles County coro-ner's report said.Houston, 48, had a history of drug addiction. An autopsy in
March determined she died of accidental drowning due to theeffects of cocaine and heart disease.Wednesday's report revealed that Houston had a perforated
nose, indicating substance abuse, filled with a bloody discharge.Detectives said she was found in about 12 inches of extreme-
ly hot water, which was determined to be 93 Fahrenheit (34Celsius) some six hours after her death.

promote themselves for jobopportunities,” Pickeringsaid. The Breakers spent their
inaugural year in theInternational BasketballLeague but opted tochangeover to the West CoastPro Basketball League.TheWCBL is aimed at giv-
ing midsized communitiesaccess to professional basket-ball, matching teams fromaround California. The firstyear saw the team go unde-feated and have gone on towin the championship 3 timeswith a 66-17 record overall. The team has assisted over
100 players with NBA tryoutsor getting jobs overseas,“We’ve not drawn big
names that bring out morefans, but we still play an
exciting style of basketball,”Pickering said.Though rosters can vary as
players secure other jobs,Pickering is looking forwardto a good season. Some of thehighlights include the addi-tion of former Gaucho centerGreg Somoygi.“I really see Greg being a
player that goes far beyondwhat he was able to contributeto the Gauchos,” Pickeringsaid. At a press conference yes-
terday, the 7 foot, 3 inchSomoygi said he’s lookingforward to taking his playingto the next level.“I think the Breakers will
be a great opportunity to getsome advanced playing andshowcase my ability,”Somoygi said at a press con-ference yesterday.Other Breakers stalwarts
are returning this year such aTim Taylor, who leads leaguein free throws, and formerL.A. Clipper player KeithCloss. Pickering said thismakes for a team that playsvery offensively.“We have a style where we
play together and we playhard, and it generates a lot ofoffense,” Pickering said. The home venue this year
will be San Marcos High
School. Pickering said it’s agood choice for the team, with a basketball-friendlygym and seating that keepsfans close to the action. The Breakers will continue
their role in the communitywith basketball trainingcamps, and having playerscome to schools to talk to stu-dents. Pickering said it’simportant that players havemore than just talent and driveon the court, they also need tohave it in the community.“Certainly they’ve got to
have basketball skill,”Pickering said. “But they alsohave to have a high quality ofcharacter and really motivat-ed.”Somoygi said he’s looking
forward to being a part of thatas well when he joins theBreakers.“It’s great to go there and
show them that we care andwhat they can do with theirlives if they work hard and dothe right thing,” Somoygisaid.FYI: The Breakers’ first
game is this Saturday, April 7at 7:05 p.m. in San MarcosHigh School. For more infor-mation go online towww.santabarbarabasketball.com or call 969-7542.

(Reuters) - Yahoo Inc willlay off 2,000 people, or 14percent of its workforce, in itsdeepest round of job cuts inyears as new Chief ExecutiveScott Thompson tries tojumpstart growth with a lean-er, more agile company whilesaving hundreds of millionsof dollars.Wall Street's reaction was
lukewarm, after two previousYahoo CEOs failed to find ananswer to rivals like Web-search leader Google and theFacebook social-networkingsite.Sunnyvale, California-
based Yahoo, which ended2011 with some 14,000employees, said it would save$375 million annually fromthe cuts and incur a pre-taxcash charge in the secondquarter of $125 million to$145 million. The company declined to
comment on severancedetails. Some analysts were skepti-
cal about the widely expected
layoffs, which weren't accom-panied by details of Yahoo'sbroader plan to revamp itsbusiness."You can't cut your way to
revenue growth," said ColinGillis of BGC Partners."What people want to see out
of Yahoo is ... a plan and pro-vision for revenue growth."Third Point, an activist
hedge fund that is waging aproxy fight to install a slate ofhandpicked directors onYahoo's board, described thelayoffs as "necessary." But
the hedge fund, Yahoo'slargest shareholder with a 5.8percent stake, said in a state-ment that it was "disappointedthat this round of cutsoccurred before CEO ScottThompson has articulated hisplan for the company."

PARENTING
the teacher and I am the student. I’ve alsoplayed the cat, the dog that fetches and the lit-tle sister you will never have. The part of thehorse is thankfully always saved for your papa. You are sensitive and very empathetic. You
care deeply about other people and things. You don’t want to hurt anyone or anything andyou want everything to be fair and just. WhenI asked you earlier this year what diversitymeant your answer was astounding:“Diversity is good because it means everybodyis different and a special way to be your own.”Really? At 5? You amaze me.You are an observer of life. Sometimes you
are happier just watching rather than doing. Isometime worry you aren’t having fun becauseyou just want to watch, but when I ask later, you always say you had a good time.I love that I still get the random, I love you.
We can be walking down the street and out ofyour mouth comes, I love you Mama. I meltevery time. You’ve taught me to wipe the kiss-es you give me off and put them in my heart. Iknow my heart will always have more roomfor your kisses and I hope you never stop stor-ing my kisses in your heart.Your eating habits are my biggest daily
struggle with you. The list of acceptable foodsis pretty short and I often think where I wentwrong as a mom that you don’t like anythingunless it’s white and sweet. You don’t eat meatbecause it’s not nice to hurt animals. So basi-cally you are a vegetarian who doesn’t eat veg-gies. I worry about your diet, but I have to
keep reminding myself you have more energythan I can handle most days, you are growing, seem healthy and you are happy.I remember a day while walking home from
school when I looked over and said to you,“Fia, you’re a good kid.”You returned the compliment by saying
“you’re a good mama.”“I try,” I said back.“No, Mama, you don’t try, your just are.”Well Fia, you don’t try to be a good kid, you
just are.Thank you for being you. You bring me so
much happiness.I love you more than you’ll ever know.MamaSusan Torrey writes a weekly parenting
