Resource Catalog
November 2014

Welcome to the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health
and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE) Resource Catalog. Here you will find
a central list of resources produced by DCoE and its three centers —
Deployment Health Clinical Center (DHCC), Defense and Veterans Brain
Injury Center (DVBIC) and National Center for Telehealth and Technology
(T2) — each of which contributes unique insights, standards, clinical tools
and research products to the fields of psychological health and traumatic
brain injury (TBI).
This collection of helpful resources is designed for use by health care
providers, service members, veterans and military families. The catalog
includes information about organizational programs, websites, educational
materials, product fact sheets, clinical practice recommendations, posters,
mobile applications and more.
We believe the contents of this catalog impact the medical treatment, care
and advocacy of our wounded warriors and their families. We encourage
you to explore the broad range of resources we have available and, of
course, share with all who may find them useful.
WELCOME

Just not feeling like yourself? Easily irritated or on edge? Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, sad or depressed?A concussion may result in changes to your behavior, personality or the way you feel (mood). These changes also could be a result of your other symptoms including pain, poor sleep and fatigue.
What can I do? • Keep an eye on your mood. If you are having negative thoughts and emotions,
identify the triggers and avoid them if possible. Use a journal or the Mood Tracker app (on the back of this page) to help you.
• Take a deep breath. Breathing exercises have been found to decrease the body’s reaction to stress. Try the Breathe2Relax app (on the back of this page) to learn deep breathing techniques that can help you manage your response to stress.
• Take care of yourself. Eat regular healthy meals, and make sure you get at least seven to eight hours of sleep. You may become irritable if you are tired or hungry.
• Think positive! Remember that over time your injuries and symptoms will continue to improve.
• Take a break. If you are in a situation that upsets you, walk away and take a few minutes to calm down. Try to approach the situation with a clearer mind.
• Use positive stress management. Make time to do something you enjoy, especially when you feel angry, frustrated or upset. Listen to some of your favorite music, visit with a friend, exercise or work on a hobby.
• Think before you act. Try to teach yourself to stop and think before you say or do something that might be inappropriate.
• Don’t rush. Give yourself plenty of time to complete tasks. Try doing one thing at a time to prevent frustration and feeling overwhelmed.
• Ask for help. A friend or trusted co-worker could help you prioritize tasks and manage your workload.
• Take your time. Try to pace yourself as you work toward your goals for recovery.
PATIENTS
Changes in Behavior, Personality or Mood Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI)
Did you know?Mood and behavior changes may appear after an mTBI. You or your loved one may not understand why this is happening or know what to do. Trying these tips may improve these feelings.
U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Lisa Tourtelot
Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center
Having trouble concentrating? Easily irritated or on edge?
Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, sad or depressed?
Understand that it is OK to have these feelings. There are things you can do to help manage these feelings. Take deep breaths, and know that the feeling will pass. Do not focus on your worries or troubles. Do something you enjoy.
This is normal and very common after a concussion/mild traumatic brain injury. Fortunately, these feelings get better with time.
Replace the negative thoughts or actions with positive ones. If you are in a situation that is upsetting you, get out of it. Go for a walk. Take a few minutes without disruption to settle yourself.
Do not call yourself bad names or put yourself down. You are not your concussion/mild traumatic brain injury. Life will get better. Stay positive.
Talk to someone you love or trust about these feelings. Many people have felt the same way you have at some point in time. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. Your health care provider can also help, so be sure to share your feelings with him or her.
If you have thoughts or feelings of hurting yourself or others, seek emergency care. You can contact the VA Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). This number is established for both Veterans and Active Duty personnel.
Symptoms associated with TBI are similar to psychological stress. If these mood changes are causing problems at work or home, seek help.
