Teaching about Islam

• Holding onto the Attitudes required of us in RE: Self-acceptance, Respect for all, Appreciation and wonder, Open-mindedness

• Note down three things you would expect to find in RE work on Islam.

• What does deeper imply? Probing in to beliefs, asking why rather than accumulating more and more at tourist / media level …..

Going deeper ……

Take a key belief or concept and unpack it.

• ENGAGE - Make links with the children’s experience…. It’s a bit like ….

• ENQUIRE - Introduce a mystery / picture / story etc to generate questions

• EXPLORE - Track the concept in Muslim text, practice and daily life.

• EVALUATE / EXPRESS - Check your understanding and share your learning.

• An encounter in EYFS - primacy of God’s name / Allah

• A possible KS1 unit - peace / obedience

• 4 required units in KS2 using Learning Themes:

Religion and the Individual – Submission

Beliefs and Questions - Tawheed /one-ness

• What aspects of ‘submission’ to God do you find difficult? How hard is submission during Ramadan?

• Can you give us an example of how you have felt part of the worldwide body (ummah) of Muslims?

• What would you say to teachers / pupils about Islam in relation to events which show Muslims in a poor light?

What next?• EYFS – Muslim section in first of EYFS units on CD1.

• KS1 Muslim unit to be written in July

• KS2 Muslim units ready for trialling for people who have attended an introductory course . You can still attend a course this summer / autumn. Book with jacqui.studd@cofesuffolk.org
