With a show of hands …– How many of you know someone that has been
hurt in an accident ?– How many of you have had some type of
accident in your life ?
How many of you woke up that day thinkingyou were going to have an accident ?

A Different Way of Thinking ?
• Safety and Risk go hand in hand.
• The higher the Risk, the more chance of an accident.
• Following Safe practices is all about minimizing Risk.
• OSHA rules and regulations, standard procedures, good housekeeping … all are about minimizing Risk.

A Different Way of Thinking ?
• What level of Risk are you willing to live with?• How many of you have played Russian Roulette?
• Of course not, you know a level of Risk you are not willing to accept.
• But what about 10 revolvers with one bullet … 100 … how about 1000 ??
• Safety is no different. Every time you do something that is unsafe, you are playing with a certain number of revolvers.

• We laugh … but people do these things.• The hazards are so blatantly obvious,
none of us would …• But what about the hazards that are
around us every day …• What about those hazards that are
present and we may just not realize, or understand …

Sobering Statistics
• More than 110,000 grads and postdocs work in academic labs in the US.
• Chemical Safety Board has collected information on about 120 accidents in labs across the US since 2001.
• 2008 – Death in a lab at UCLA … burns caused by chemical fire.
• 2011 – Death in a Yale machine shop … asphyxiation … hair caught in lathe.
• 2010 – Serious injury in a Texas Tech lab … chemical detonation.

Death at UCLA …
• Investigator: "And when Sheri arrived, do you know if she received any general lab safety training from the university?" Harran: "I don't believe she received generalized safety training. Hazard Recognition
• You can minimize Risk by recognizing hazards beforehand.
• Some hazards are easily recognized, others require some training.
• Let’s see how good you are at recognizing hazards.

To get to where we are today required a change in the way we think about safety

• You are all very smart people. THINK before you do something new.
• Talk amongst yourselves … learn what potential hazards exist.
• The more you talk and observe, the better you’ll be at recognizing hazards.

What You Need to Understand
• What you learn here can give you a competitive advantage in your next job … or …
• It can teach you VERY bad habits that will ultimately be hard to break … .
• Do you smoke in the lab ? Wear sandals, shorts ? Use safety glasses, gloves ? Wear hearing protection when you cut the grass ? Text while driving ?
• Whether in the lab, at work, or at home … it all makes a difference !!!!!
