Demand response in Ireland: DSU
What is demand response?
Demand side response is a method of reducing electricity use and consumption at times of peak demand on the Grid…
…This allows system operators to avoid using expensive and polluting “peaking” power stations.
How do demand response programs work?
• Energy consumption and asset suitability is assessed for participation in a programme• There must be no disruption to existing site operations
Air handling• Air conditioning and circulation, variable
speed drive fans• Short term change to temperature set point
doesn’t affect comfort and can reduce a building’s consumption by 20%
Building Management Systems• Existing management systems can be used
to intelligently and automatically control systems
Lighting• Common area, floor and feature lighting• Shutting off or dimming certain lights for a
short time can cut consumption by 15%
Assets used in Demand Response
Mining & Quarries• Bitumen tank heating • Crushers• Grinders• Conveyer belts• Variable speed drives • Building management systems
Foundries & Metal processing • Electric induction furnaces• Ovens• Pumps & melting pots• Variable speed drives • Building management systems
Commercial property• Chillers• AHU’s• Pumps• Fans• UPS• Building management systems
Airport & Hospitals• Onsite generation• UPS• Combined heat & power system
Commercial refrigeration• Supermarket refrigeration• Cold storage• Compressors• Refrigerator packs• UPS• Variable speed drives
Universities • Chillers• Electric heating• Standby diesel generation• AHU’s• Laundry rooms
IT & Telecoms• Computer air conditioning units• Chillers• DRUPS• UPS• Batteries
Manufacturing• Electric hot water boilers• Pumps• Variable speed drives• Fans• Building management systems
Water treatment & processing • Variable speed drive pumps• Blowers• Aerators• Motors & industrial plant • BMS/PMS
KiWi’s approach is free and very simple:
Stage 1 - Engagement, Initial Assessment, Sign-Up.
Stage 2 - Site Audit, Programme Design, Install / Test / Train staff
Stage 3 - Participation, Payments, Report & Review
KiWi Power assess site(s) & client contracts to no risk demand
response programme
KiWi carries out full site audits, designs client program, installs proprietary smart meters & controls to execute demand response and trains client teams
Client operational, with KiWi Power managing events, payments &
reporting
Demand Response from KiWi Power Ireland
Benefits of demand response
The business benefits to participation in demand response
Financial benefits:
Real time energy monitoring:
Assess & maintain operational readiness:
No cost for our equipment:
£
Continued monitoring and activation of controls and generation assets ensures infrastructure is operationally sound
There is no cost to participants or any interruption to service (depending on the level of participation sought)
Real-time, multiple site smart metering is installed, & monitored through KiWi’s Client application improving energy consumption and usage intelligence
Participation in DSU can generate significant annual revenues. Sign up, metering & communication costs are covered by KiWi Power
Hedging against increased energy
costs
Participation in DSU helps to offset increased energy costs through increased DR payments

KiWi Power operations platform (KOMP)
• Proprietary software developed and managed in-house• Cloud-based infrastructure multiple redundancy, 100% up
time • Fully encrypted storage and communications• Real-time monitoring of system, metering points and
connectivity• Live tracking and reporting of demand and frequency
response events• Scalable: designed and tested for tens of thousands of Client
sites / billions of real-time meter readings • Fully automated dispatch
Client information portal with real time info
Installation of our PiP smart meter gives clients access to the KiWi Power client application or "client app"
Through the app interface, clients can access:
• Live monitoring and reporting of kilowatt consumption for each site or meter point
• Active time-of-use management and communications• Comparative data of historical consumption for each meter• Real time calculation of revenues generated• Live tracking and reporting of demand response events
Payments and Reports
• Availability: The majority of your payment comes from simply being available
• Utilisation: There is a payment for each kW/ MW displaced during an event
• Onsite Generation: Existing backup generators can be used to replace site load or export spare capacity back to the grid (where the DNO permits)
