ProfessorMurliM.GuptaiscontinuinginthepositionoftheMathematicsDepartmentchair.ProfessorDanUllmanhasreturnedtotheMathematicsDepartmentafterfouryearsasassociatedeanforundergraduatestudiesintheColumbianCollege.

InSpring2016,theGWChapter(DCGamma)ofthePiMuEpsilonMathematicsHonorSocietywasreactivated.Thiswasaccomplishedbythejointeffortofstudentsandfaculty.Thechapter’sfacultyadvisorwasProfessorJosephBonin.It’spermanentfacultycorrespondentwasProfessorAlexanderShumakovitch.

RecentgraduateswithPhDinmathematics:CarlHammarsten(currentlyvisitingassistantprofessoratLafayetteCollege);LeahMarshall(currentlyattheUSCensusBureau);TomSavitsky(postdoctoralpositioninbioinformatics&biostatisticsatTexasA&MHealthScienceCenter,TexasA&MUniversity);DavidShoup(currentlyassistantprofessoratAlverniaUniversity);JingWang(currentlyassistantprofessoratChristianBrothersUniversity).

WerecentlymodifiedourqualifyingexamstructureforPhDstudentstomakeittransparentandeasytonavigate.Wedroppedthecredithourrequirementsformaster’sprogramsfrom36credithoursto30andeliminatedthequalifyingexamrequirements.In2016,wegraduatedfourmaster’sandthreePhDgraduates.

Werecentlyreformedouradvisingsystemresultinginmanyimprovements.Thisyear,wehavealargenumber(121)ofdeclaredmathmajorsand52mathminors;thenumberofmathmajorshasdoubledinfiveyears.Thisyearwehad33graduates.WehaveworkedwiththeNSFfundedDATAmasterprogramandtheJointUndergraduateMathematicsandPhysicsScholarships(JUMP)program.Fourundergraduateseniorswroteanddefendedtheirseniorthesesthisyear.
