Designer Audits for Selective Admission ProgramsPresented by:
Sharlene Allen
September 2008
How it Began
• Worked with Dental Dept. to develop a DARS audit for use in selecting Dental Hygiene students– Typically 200+ applicants for 18 openings
• Used the first time for selection of 2007-08 admits
• Director stated the process previously took numerous people several weeks to complete (estimate was at least three solid working days)
• Using the audit, the review process was completed in about three hours
More Requests
• Added an audit for selection of Dental Assisting students– This was used Spring 2008 to select 2008-09 admits
• Currently finalizing an audit for selection of students within the Nursing Dept.– Will be customized for criteria of each program – Includes some different criteria than Dental Hygiene audit– Test run will be within the next month to select Summer admits
• Also working on an audit for selection of Radiologic Technology students
Dental Hygiene Audit Criteria• Looks for a list of 11 courses
• Removes all unacceptable grades, including anything below a C (to match program requirement)
• Repeated courses - always accepts the better grade
• Some courses will allow substitutes if the substitute course had a better grade– e.g., Looks for ENGL1101, but if ENGL1102 was completed and
has better grade, can use for application purposes– Note this is for selection purposes only; the program
requirements remain the same
• Checks for completion of developmental reading, writing and math requirements
