Dear Parents, Harmony Week Kilberry Valley Primary School has such a diverse number of nationalities that it was a tremendous celebration and exhibition of many nations today as we celebrated Harmony Day. Some of our students entertained the school community with their performance and all students engaged in many activities in their classrooms this week. There is always a tremendous smell of interesting food around the school on this day and I thank everyone who contributed to make Harmony Day such a special celebration and a time to recognise and appreciate our diverse school community. SRC Fundraiser - Crazy Hair Day Thank You For your interest - the Crazy Hair Day fundraiser to support our World Vision child Alan Tonconi from Bolivia, raised $570 to ensure we can pay the yearly sponsorship. Thanks to everyone who got into the spirit and had a very colorful and crazy day!! New No Smoking Regulations
You may have read in the papers or heard on the news that there are new no smoking laws that will come into effect on Monday 13th April. Smoking is to be banned at learning environments and certain building entrances: From 13 April 2015, smoking will be banned: within the grounds of, and at and within four metres of entrances to all Victorian
childcare centres, kindergartens (or Pre Schools) and primary and secondary schools at and within four metres of an entrance to children’s indoor play centres and Victoria
public premises. Victoria public premises are all public hospitals and registered community health centres and certain Victorian Government buildings.
We have received instructions this week to order No Smoking signs and erect them at each entrance to our school. We have placed an order, but they may not arrive and be erected by the first day of term 2, which is the 13th April. I ask your cooperation to ensure you are following these new instructions even if the signs are not erected on the first day of term. More information regarding this new legislation can be found by clicking the following link. http://www.health.vic.gov.au/tobaccoreforms/ I look forward to seeing no smoking near our school entrances.
Safety First around the School I trust you have noticed the roadside safety sign in Kilberry Boulevard. Casey Council have erected this to remind you to ensure you have the students’ safety as your first priority when dropping off or picking up your children. This is a continuing matter and I once again bring it to your attention. It will be too late if a child gets hit and it concerns me to still see parents driving into the staff car park, turning into the car park entrances to turn around in front of busy traffic and U-Turns in busy traffic also. I thank you in advance for making this a strong priority to finish the term. Asbestos Report I informed you a few weeks ago that we were to have an audit that would check over the areas of the school that contain asbestos. This was completed last Thursday and we received a positive report. The inspector was happy with the processes we have in place and the condition of the asbestos. You will have noticed signs have been erected stating which rooms do contain this building material that was used many years ago. We have not received the final report as yet but have been told one of the recommendations will be that the Department of Education and Training remove the existing asbestos from the site to enable us to be an asbestos free school. Hopefully this recommendation will be looked upon favourably! Please see me if you have any queries reading this report. Exciting News!! School Council met for the first time on Monday night and I really looking forward to working with the new 2015 Council. One exciting motion that was passed was to engage a company to complete the under surfacing of the new playground. This work will be completed (weather permitting) over the break. Hopefully we will return to a finished playground that we can use!!! The design of this playground lends itself to having students from all ages using it, but obviously we cannot simply allow every year level on it at once to start off as there would simply not be enough room to move. We will develop a roster to commence the term and inform you what days various year levels can paly in this exciting new playground. There are still more items to be installed but we will be able to use it as it is when the under surfacing is complete. So, fingers crossed for some fine Easter weather. Early Dismissal- End of Term. We will dismiss at 2.30 this Friday 27th March for the end of term 1. Please ensure you have made arrangements for the earlier pick up time. Friday is an exciting day with the Cross Country for Years 3 to 6 in the first session of the day and the fun run around the oval for the Prep to 2 classes after recess. I hope to see you at school, cheering them on. Have a great holiday break, don’t eat too many Easter eggs and keep smiling! Neil Cunningham

Each session will begin at 7.30 and conclude at 9.00 pm.
FORUM ONE: WEDNESDAY, 25TH MARCH, 2015 ‘HOW DIFFICULT CAN THIS BE’

He lets us see the world through the eyes of a child with special needs.

Cyberbullying is any kind of bullying or harassment using any type of technology. This session will provide participants with the skills to protect themselves and their children.
FORUM THREE: WEDNESDAY 27TH MAY ‘LAST ONE PICKED….FIRST ONE PICKED ON’
This video is about how children with special needs have problems with their social skills. Richard Lavoie will give us strate-gies on how to improve our children’s abilities to communicate more effectively and develop friendships.
FORUM FOUR: WEDNESDAY 24TH JUNE ‘WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN….’
In this video Richard Lavoie talks about building positive self esteem in our children. He will also give us strategies to change our children’s misbehaviour.
FORUM FIVE: WEDNESDAY, 26TH AUGUST ‘IT’S SO MUCH WORK TO BE YOUR FRIEND’
This video explores the causes and consequences of having ‘social incompetence’. Richard Lavoie provides powerful strategies for teach-ing students friendship skills.
FORUM SIX: WEDNESDAY, 28TH OCTOBER ‘EFFECTIVE MANGEMENT OF CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS’
This session provides participants with an understanding and appreciation of why students misbehaviour and how this effects their learning outcomes. Practical and effective strategies will be provided to attendees in managing a range of challenging behaviours. This session is particularly relevant to parents, teachers and other professionals dealing with children who have been diagnosed with Autism, I hope you can join us in what will be six entertaining and informative sessions.

WELFARE CORNER
Bedtime Basics Children need plenty of sleep to rest their growing bodies
and minds. But for many children, bedtime is no fun, and
for many parents, getting children to bed – and stay there –
can be frustrating.
Quick tips
Keep a consistent bedtime and soothing routine for getting
to bed.
Turn off the TV, video games and computer at least 30
minutes before bedtime.
Praise your child for staying in bed.
Holding off bedtime troubles:
A regular bedtime.
A reminder to start winding down, about 30 minutes ahead
of bedtime.
A trip to the bathroom to use the toilet, wash up, and
brush teeth.
A consistent bedtime routine that includes soothing
activities, such as a story time.
A place to sleep with comfortable temperature, ventilation,
and a nightlight.
A bedroom without a TV or video games.
A reminder to stay quiet and in bed, and a final
goodnight from you.
Praise the next morning for staying in bed.
When your child won’t stay in bed:
Return your child to bed right away.
Find out what your child is afraid of – nightlights and
monster checks can make children feel safer.
Teach your child relaxation techniques.
If your child cries or protests, wait a few minutes,
then go back to check on him or her.
If your child continues to cry or call for you, wait a little
longer each time before you go to check.
Remind your child that it’s time to go to sleep, and if your
child stays quiet, you’ll come back to check on him or her
in a few minutes.

CANTEEN NEWS
TERM 2 The Canteen will re-open on Wednesday 15th April 2015
CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR STUDENTS
We would like to remind parents to
provide a change of clothing in children’s school bags (preferably some
clean underwear, track suit pants, shorts or a dress),
particularly as we are coming into cooler and wet weather
This is handy for ALL children in ALL grade
levels as it makes them feel less stressed if they require a change of clothing owing to an accident. We ask for
your
co-operation with this matter as our Sick Bay is unable to cope with the large volume of people
requiring changes of clothing.
THANK YOU
