“Did you know….”

Facilities Division

In 2006 high school teacherKarl Fisch created the original

presentation from which this one was developed.

He wanted to explain to his peersat Arapahoe High School in

Centennial, CO why they needed to change how they prepared their

students for an increasingly changing world.

Mr. Fisch’s presentation has since been officially revised 4 times

along with many permutations that have been viewed by millions

around the world.

The following is an updated version tailored to our mission in

Facilities at LBNL….

Did you know….

In the next 8 seconds 34 babies will be born in India,

China and the US

17 in India,14 in China,

and 3 in the US

What will the world be like for them?

Name this country….

• Richest in the world

• Largest military

• Center of world business and finance

• Strongest education system

• World center of innovation and invention

• Currency the world standard

• Highest standard of livingX

Great Britain

….in 1900

2006 college graduates….

US: 1.3 million

India: 3.1 million

China: 3.3 million

How many 2006 college graduates in India speak

English?

100%

In 10 years it is predicted that the number one English

speaking country in the world will be….

China

X

Who would have predicted this 60 years ago?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor….

1 out of 4 workers has been with their current employer

less than one year

1 out of 2 workers has been with their current employer

less than 5 years

The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that today’s students

will have 10-14 jobs….

by their 38th birthday.

Many of today’s college majors didn’t exist 10 years

ago.

New media

Organic agriculturee-business

NanotechnologyHomeland security

What will they study 10 years from now?

The US is currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet

exist….

….using technologies that haven’t been invented….

….in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems

yet.

Today’s 21 year-olds have:Watched 20,000 hours of TV

Played 10,000 hours of electronic games

Talked 10,000 hours on the phone

and they’ve sent / received 250,000 e-mails or instant

messages.

More than 50% of US 21 year-olds have created

content on the web.

More than 70% of US 4 year-olds have used a

computer.

Years it took to reach a market audience of 50 million:

Radio: 38

TV: 13

Internet: 4

Number of Internet devices in 1984: 1,000

Number of Internet devices in 1992: 1,000,000

Number of Internet devices in 2006: 600,000,000….

and we are moving towards 50,000,000,000 in the future.

Did you know….

We are living in exponential! times

The first commercial text message was sent in

December 1992.

The number of text messages sent and received today….

….exceeds the number of people on the planet.

Computers were not part of the social scene in the US in

1990.

The Internet started being widely used by the general

public in early 1995.

1 out of 8 couples married in the US in 2005….

….met on-line

There were more than 90 billion searches performed on

Google….

….this month

To whom were these questions directed B.G.?

(Before Google)

Did you know….

There are about 540,000 words in the English language….

….about 5 times as many as during Shakespeare’s time.

More than 3,000 new books were published….

….today.

Did you know….

Sometimes size does matter.

If you’re one in a million in China….

….there are 1,330 people just like you,

and in India, there are 1,160 people just like you.

The 25% of the population in China with the highest IQ’s….

is greater than the total population of North America.

In India, it’s the top 28%.

Did you know….

The amount of technical information is doubling every

two years

That means for Cal Berkeley students starting a four-year

degree in Engineering or Science….

….half of what they learn in their first year of study will be

outdated by their third year of study.

The fourth generation of fiber optics has been recently

tested….

That pushes 14 Tbits (14,000,000,000,000 bits) per

second down one strand of fiber.

That’s 2,660 CDs or 210 million simultaneous phone calls every

second.

The fiber is already there, they’re just improving the amplifiers and

the switches on the ends….

….which means the marginal cost of these improvements is

effectively….

….zero, zip, nada

Did you know….

Predictions are that by the time children born in 2007 are

6 years old,

a supercomputer’s computation capabilities will

exceed that of the human brain.

….and while predictions further out than 15 years are

hard to do….

in 2049 a $1,000 computer

will exceed the computing capabilities….

….of the human race

What does it all mean?

Shift Happens

“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking

we used when we created them.”

-Albert Einstein

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and

over, and expecting different results.”

-Albert Einstein (?)

Now you know . . . .

Change is happening whether we like it or

not.

We need to do in Months what took Years,

Please join us!

This is where Facilities is going….

You get the point.

We need to do in Days what took Weeks,

We need to do in Weeks what took Months,

And we need to do it better and for less….

X

Think about it….
