• Dietitians of Canada Internship Process • Post-degree – apply in final year at Acadia
• Masters/ Practicum Combined Programs • Separate process for each program • Can apply in 4th year
OVERVIEW OF DIETITIANS OF CANADA INTERNSHIP SELECTION PROCESS
• Web-based computer program
• Applicants enter 3 internship choices from 16 possible programs
• Applications sent directly to internship programs
• Programs rank candidates
• Computerized offers sent out • May receive more than one offer
• Timeline to accept or decline
• Process continues until positions filled or all ranked
applicants have been offered positions
HOW AND WHEN TO APPLY
• December 4, 2013 - Register for the DC internship selection process
• Pay the Fee: $146.90 including HST by credit card or
PayPal. • All applications must be received by the individual
programs by February 1, 2014 • Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted • Check for application fees • Read and re-read all instructions from DC Internship
Application Guide, Application Forms etc. • Check each program brochure carefully for specific
requirements
APPLICATION
• Review specific academic standards for each program • Application consists of: • Personal Letter • Current Resume • Official Transcript • Confidential Reference(3) • Contact Information Sheet
• *Please note that some programs have additional application requirements. In such cases, they are outlined in the applicable program brochure.
PERSONAL LETTER
• Tell the internship program coordinator why you are the best candidate for their program. • Your letter will be evaluated based on: • content, clarity of goals, interest in the profession and the
program, potential contribution to the profession, communication skills, interpersonal skills, and self direction.
• Your letter must be professional • no longer than one page, single-spaced, in 12 font, with one
inch margins.
RESUME
• Your resume should highlight your education, your work and volunteer experience that are relevant to dietetics • Your resume must be: • no longer than 2 pages, single-spaced, in 12 font, with one
inch margins
• Include your education and experience in reverse
chronological order • Most recent first • Indicate the length of each experience
OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT(S)
• Transcript(s) must be official bearing the university’s seal or a notarized copy. • All post-secondary transcripts that contribute to
your DC accredited undergraduate degree must also be submitted. • Your transcripts must include marks for all courses
completed by the end of the first semester of the current academic year.
APPLICANT’S CONTACT INFORMATION SHEET
• Important reference for the internship program
coordinator. • Make sure it includes your present and permanent
contact information. • If any of the information changes, notify the
coordinator.
CONFIRMATION OF COMPLETION OF ACADEMIC PROGRAM FORM
• The SND will provide this form to verify that you are expected to complete all of the academic requirements (Dietetic Option) before the internship • Successful applicants have to provide verification no later
than one month prior to the start of internship • Failure to meet academic requirements will result in dismissal
from the internship program
• Students notified in January by Lynn Coleman when form is ready for pick up.
CONFIDENTIAL REPORT ON DIETETIC INTERNSHIP APPLICATION
• Three referees • make your selection wisely
• Should know you well enough to judge your performance • Your referees should know you in a professional,
student or business capacity. • Previous or current employer • A supervisor of a volunteer work experience • An academic* and/or Registered Dietitian reference is
preferred.
• A reference from a family member is not permitted
CONFIDENTIALITY
• Provide your referees with three envelopes addressed to each program • Ask them to return each of their 3 completed forms
to you in these sealed envelopes • MUST write their signature across the back flap. • Separate envelopes
• Any unused references MUST be returned to the referee.
ACADEMIC REFERENCE FROM ACADIA
• School will provide a composite academic reference at your request • All faculty members contribute to the reference • SND Faculty members will not provide individual references • Sign up sheet will be posted in November • You must let us know that you want a reference by the date
specified
• READ your Acadia email regularly and watch for important notices
• Must return any unused references
DC TIMELINE SUMMARY
• October – Review application package
• December 4th, 2013 • Fee must be paid • Computer registration access for Internship Selection open
• February 1 • Applicant deadline, computerized internship program choices • Application Package deadline to internship programs
DC TIMELINE SUMMARY
• Interviews held in February • Don’t make plans for study break as some programs will interview that week
• March 10, 2014 • Results of First Process Round email notification • Must reply by 5:00 PM on March 11, 2014 • Process continues until all spots are full
• If programs run out of ranked applicants a Second Process Round may be held • Only open to first round applicants

ADVICE FROM COORDINATORS
• Looking for high academic ability, work experience, strong references, and professional potential. • An application package that follows directions
explicitly, and is professional in appearance and content, is very important. • A well-developed personal letter • Read the internship program brochures carefully
PLAN AHEAD
• Don’t leave your reference requests to the last minute • Start thinking about your personal letter now • Remember you are trying to come to life for the
reader from pieces of paper
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
• All interns, not just dietetics, are ineligible for student loans • Federal student loan regulations dictate
who is eligible or ineligible
• Many programs have application and program fees • Additional costs – accommodations, DC
student membership to access free liability insurance, transportation may be required
