Digimap Collections

• 4 JISC-licensed collections of mapping data

• EDINA designs, and hosts the data for, the 4 browser-based Digimap Collections

• Colleges and universities subscribe to each Digimap Collection separately

•Users must register individually to gain access to OS Collection, Geology Digimap and Marine Digimap

Subscription

• Costs depend on JISC banding scheme and on Collection– See: http://edina.ac.uk/digimap/access/

• Institution has direct contract with JISC

• Annual fee for each academic year, 1 August to 31 July– subscription pro rated for part years

• Digimap OS Collection - OS educational copyright licence required (currently £300 +VAT pa)– may need upgrading from previous licence– available directly from Ordnance Survey

• Planned that new licence agreement will run from August 2010 – 31 July 2016 (opt-out option every 2 years)

• Launched October 2010• Allows users to stream certain OS data sets directly to

their software without downloading and storing large quantities of data

What can I do with Digimap?

1. Make a map within the service:– Uses the data stored on EDINA’s servers– Download as an image file– or print the map directly from the service

2. Download raw data: – Store the data locally– Make your own map, with appropriate software e.g.

GIS, CAD, image software

3. Query facilities available– E.g. search for a place name, get geographical

coordinates

Authentication

• Login via UK federation from 1 August 2008.

• To access Digimap Collections, institutions must be able to assert User Accountability.

• With OpenAthens, a virtual Identity Provider with Eduserv is necessary in order to assert User Accountability.

• Institutional Identity Providers must release the appropriate attributes:

• EDINA has no control over the set-up of your local authentication system. You must seek advice from Eduserv if you are using OpenAthens or otherwise from the UK Federation Helpdesk.

User registration

• Individual registration required for each of Digimap OS, Geology Digimap and Marine Digimap

• Can register for more than one collection on same form

• Approval process takes between 24 hours and 2 working days

• User email must be correct and must be one the user uses (Hotmail is fine!)

• Change of user details submitted via form in online Help, within Registration & Support area

• Required whenever any changes are made to the licence, e.g. on 1 August 2009 Variation Agreement for Digimap’s Ordnance Survey Collection came into effect

Data care and security

Institution has responsibilities for data security which are stipulated in the licence agreement, including:

– Appoint a Responsible Officer and a Deputy for care of data

– Familiarise each user with the terms of use of the relevant licence agreement(s)

– Encouraging secure onward storage and use of any maps made and data downloaded among Authorised Users

– Report any breaches of data security to EDINA and carry through to resolution

• 2 formats available: PNG and PDF• Printer specifications

– minimum resolution of 300 dpi (higher recommended)

– colour printer very much preferred– A4 size for all Collections– up to A0 size for Carto

Onward use of data

• Onward use of downloaded data will require GIS, CAD or Image Processing software

• Some of the data will require conversion before use in software

• Suitable applications available through CHEST e.g. ArcGIS

• Local support will be required for these packages• Some information about software given in

Digimap Help pages– not exhaustive– provides guidance on most widely used software

Copyright and Terms of Use

In summary:• maps produced from Digimap are for Teaching,

Educational Research or Academic Research by registered users.

• there are some restrictions on the size and form of publication of maps from Digimap.

• copies may be made of maps printed from Digimap providing they are required for Teaching, Educational Research or Academic Research purposes. All copies must continue to show the copyright acknowledgement.

• all maps must carry an appropriate copyright acknowledgement, for example: "© Crown Copyright/database right 20(yy). An Ordnance Survey/EDINA supplied service."
