The narrow rings shown in this crosssection could have been caused byseveral things such as drought(picture 3), heavy insect damage(picture 4), or damage from construction(picture 5). If a tree loses all or most ofits leaves because of an insect attack ordrought, it is not able to make food andgrows very litHe that year. Root damagefrom construction of a house orsidewalk too- close to the tree reducesthe water andmineraJs the roots canabsorb.

fOREST I YOUR YARD

Logging took place winter. Logs were ,skidded to the river by horse-drawn sleighsover the ice. Then in the springtime when therivers thawed, logs were floated'downstream.You may have seen pictures of logjams show­ing what happened when logs becametangled. Sometimes dynamite wasneededtobreak up the jams.
