NIHONBASHIThe frontier spirit is still well alive and vivid today, centuries after a swamp-land was developed into Edo, the new capital of Japan. Nihonbashi, literally meaning ‘Japan Bridge’, was at the heart of Edo, the starting point for the Gokaido – the Five Highways – that connected the capital with the outer regions. The most famous highway wasthe Tokaido, connecting Edo and Kyoto, the former capital.
The town of Nihonbashi has alwaysbeen at the center of commerce and action – the now bustling Tsukiji Fish market was once here before moving. Shops have been in business for centuries, serving the townspeople’s everyday needs. Nihonbashi today is a place where tradition and modern day living meet – from large department st-ores, stylish new shopping complexes and small shops in business for centur-ies, people come here to mnd what they are looking for, and at the same time, come to feel the excitement of discov- ering something new.
Explore Nihonbashi; come see for yourself, what has attracted people to this town for centuries.
