WATER DISPLACEMENT

A procedure to find the volume of an irregularly shaped object.1. Fill a graduated cylinder with water, about half way.2. Gently slide the object into the graduated cylinder. 3. Observe the final volume of the graduated cylinder and subtract from the initial volume.

MEASURING MATTER

Mass – describes the amount of matter in an object. Mass will be measured with an electronic scale. Volume – describes the amount of space an object occupies. The units of volume most commonly used cubic centimeters and milliliters. 1cm3 = 1mL

Mean – the average of a set of numbers. Total all of the numbers and divide by the number of sets. Median – the middle number of a set, put all of the numbers in numerical order and find the number in the middle.1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13Mode – this is the most frequent number in a set of data3, 4, 4, 5, 6

DENSITY NOTES Density - The amount of matter in a given volume

You cannot measure density directly

Formula for density: D=M/V

Formula for volume: V= M/D

Formula for mass: M = VxD

Ending unit for density: g/cm3

FORMULA CARD:

CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTY

The density of a substance is a characteristic of that substance. Therefore, density is a property that can be used to help identify a substance.

DO NOW:

1. If a block of copper measures 2.00cm x 4.00cm x 5.00cm and weighs 356 grams, what is its density?

2. A student pipettes 5.00mL of ethanol alcohol into a flask weighing 15.25grams. She finds that the mass of the flask plus the ethanol = 19.17grams. Calculate the density of the ethanol alcohol.
