Do NowLayers of the Atmosphere

No Notes

1. Why are there different atmosphere layers?2. What are the layers from the ground up?3. Which layer do we live in?4. Which layer is considered outer space?5. Which layer is the most dense? Least dense?

Check your neighbors answers using your notes.

Today’s Notes

1. In your Class Work/Notes section, you will take the following notes

2. Go to MsJonesScience7.WordPress.com3. Access the Temperature, Pressure, Density-What’s the

connection post?4. Take notes from the PowerPoint. 5. 20 mins to get the notes!

Atmospheric air pressure:

• Is the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on the earth

• A barometer is any

instrument that

measures air

pressure.

Air pressure can change

• Altitude: how high you are– Ex. If you hike up a mountain, your altitude increases.

Air pressure can change.

• The higher your altitude, the less air pressure is on you.• This is because there is less air above you

Connection between Air Pressure, Altitude,

Quick Write

• In 3 sentences, explain what your experience at the top of the mountain would be like?

• Include your breathing, the air pressure pushing down on you, etc

Connection Between Air Pressure and Temperature

Temperature Increases

Air Pressure Increases

Real World Examples Air Pressure and Temperature

ONLY COPY THE BOLD: • Over the summer Ms. Jones needed less air for her car tires. When the

weather started to get cold for Fall, her “check tire pressure” light came on in her car.

• In the summer the air is a lot warmer so the molecules are moving around a lot. The tire expands and you not need as much air because the pressure in the tires is high enough. In the winter, when the air is cold, the molecules are moving very slowly. Many people need to add more air to their tires because there is not enough pressure.

Egg in the Bottle Trick

•Why does the egg slide into the bottle, even though no one is pushing it?

Use your notes to explain the experiment. Use complete sentences, be ready to share.

Density - what do you remember?

Oil floats on water because it is less dense. Water floats on syrup because it is less dense.

Density - how compact is something?

Density is a measure of how much matter is contained in a space.

D = VM

Density Equation practice - solve on back, show your work.

1. The volume of a solution was measured in a graduated cylinder (shown below). If the mass of solution is measured to be 60.75 grams, what is the density of the solution?

2. What is the density of a piece of wood that has a mass of 25.0 grams and a volume of 29.4 cm3?

3. (Warning: you will have to manipulate the equation to find this answer) Gasoline is a non-polar liquid that will float on water. 450 grams of gasoline is spilled into a puddle of water. If the density of gasoline is 0.665 g/mL, what volume of gasoline is spilled?

The troposphere is the densest layer because of gravity pressing down on it.

Air pressure decreases as altitude increases

Temperature varies within each layer as the altitude increases:-Temperature decreases in troposphere-Temperature increases in stratosphere-Temperature is coldest in mesosphere-Temperature is highest (but not HOT) in thermosphere-Temperature increases in exosphere
