FUNCTION How does the Drill-Pilot work?
Basically the Drill-Pilot is a simple inertial navigation system, similar to the navigation system in an airplane. It calculates it‘s position by integrating every movement along the three axes (via accelerometers) and every small rotation around the three axes (fibre optical gyros – FOG‘s) – this calculation is done 1.000 times per second. To stabilize the positions accuracy, the actual drilling depth is transmitted from the rig directly to the Drill-Pilot.
FUNCTION
The general accuracy of the position measurement is better than 0,5% of the measured length within predefined boundary conditions. One of these conditions is the calibration of the true north direction. Due to the fact the Drill-Pilot can find true north only with an accuracy of +5° it is necessary to use a calibration frame which has a exact known direction (measured by a surveyor). After longer measuring times (> 1 hour) the measurement should be refined either by a resurveying of the whole borehole or, during drilling, by using anchor points because the accuracy of azimuth angle degrades depending on the measuring time (gyro drift). The depth information from the drill rig is transmitted via cable in real time for a precise position calculation – therefore you get an real time position display.
