THE HfJ T RfJ/J SHfJ W
THIS second annual Hot Rod Exposition and Automotive Equipment
Display is another milestone in the growth and progress of the Southern California Timing Association, Inc.
This exposition is a bigger, better and more representative presentation than last year's show. It is the culmination of a year of planning and work by the Association officers and members and the Hollywood Associates, Inc., Exposition Directors.
Once again, the show is staged as a public relations project for the Southern California Timing Association. Once again, the theme is safety and once again the keynote is co-operation with law enforcement agencies and other organizations concerned with reduction of the accident toll in Southern California.
The sponsors and the show directors hope that you will discover in this exposition more than a mere display of technical interest. The underlying significance is far greater and more Important than that.
When you view the cars on exhibit and the various specially designed accessories and parts, you are seeing concrete evidence of _ youthful American ingenuity, inventiveness, energy and untold hours, days and months of painstaking work.
You are witnessing the physical aspects of an activity which has three separate facets-a hobby, a sport and a commercial venture. The hobby of designing, b~ilding and improving automobiles provides a constructive occupation for idle hours. The sport of testing these cars against similar cars built by fellow club members gives an outlet for young America's zest for competition.
The commercial aspect, in many instances, permits these young men to turn a hobby into a profitable career wherein they may indulge their love of machines and things mechanical.
The story of the Timing Association is the traditional story of young Amer-
Six
The new look has invaded the automotive field, at least at the Dry Lakes competition. The trend is now toward more and better streamlining and m'any new and unusual desigris have made their initial appearances in the meets this past y·ear. Most popular innovation is the adaption of the aircraft belly-tank into universal -use as an economical aid to streamlining. One new look number which caused much comment both pro and con was the Cadillac powered rear engine roadster belonging to ex-S.C.T.A. president Ak Miller. This car, known to Ak's friends as "The Hot Dog," is equipped with. a 1923 roadster body and used an aluminum P-38 fuel tank nose for its hood, shell and griHe. At least that's what it says in the official S.C.T.A. program put out by Wally Parks and Bony Willis.
icans who share a common interest. It is a story of an obscure beginning, rather crude and inefficient operation, of trial and error. It is a story of growth and development over a period of II years, interrupted by war which saw a decimation of the membership roster.
This phase of the story is in itself a heroic chapter, but one with which we are not primarily concerned here. Suffice to say that several of the air corps' top pilots had their early training in mechanics on the dry lakes in this area, and to recall that numerous S.C.T.A. men were with Gen. Patton's tank corps in the break through a·t Ardennes.
Now, II years after the Association was incorporated and adopted operationa! rules and by-laws, including
' strict adherence to the California Motor Vehicle code, the organization · claims a membership of more than I,OOO young men who are enrolled in 37 clubs located in nearly every community throughout this area.
The time trials, which the Association conducts at El Mirage dry lakes, comprise the central activity of the organization. There, the members run their machines over a measured _course under the strictest supervision. · This supervision includes a rigid inspection .of equipment by a technical committee schooled in every department of automobile construction. It includes a meticulous check of the course and a screening of the drivers before any roadster is allowed at the starting line.
This careful attention to detail is the result of an evolutionary process after
Association _officers saw the need for added precautionary measures as the time trials increased in popularity and the membership doubled and tripled.
The attention and interest. of the Association members in safety is not limited to the locale of the time trials. The S.C.T.A. is just as interested in safety on the streets and highways.
R~alizing that good equipment IS
just as important in the prevention of accidents as careful driving, the Association makes a fetish of building good cars. They have no high regard for a self-styled Hot Rod operator who drives inferior equipment. Such a driver is, in their opinion, a menace not only to himself, but to the public as well.
The show - off, the reckless and thoughtless car operator is held in low esteem and can expect only criticism and censure from Association members.
A superficial or hurried inspection of the display cars will not allow you to
note the stress that is placed on safety. Check the under-structure, the brakes, the bracing, the tires, and you will discover that these roadsters are more solidly and safely constructed than your own automobile.
Look at the power plants and the various innovations employed by the owners to obtain better motor performance. Inspect the body design and note the desire for simplicity; the absence of what the members call "gook." Observe the balance and the roadability of the sleek roadsters. These features are not mere fads; they all serve a practical purpose.
OFFICIAL PROGRAM
All of the refinements which make these automobiles different from the stock car represent endless hours of
experiment, change-over, testing and rebuilding. No one satisfied with anything less than technological perfection would have the patience to undertake such a project.
The interest of noted automotive
engineers in the accomplishments of these young Southern Californians is indication that this is not a frivolous nor .transient pastime. The exhibit which unfolds itself before you on this exposition floor is further evidence of the stability and permanence of the
sport.
You will see here a display by the Traffic Education of · the Los Angeles Police Department, an indication of the willingness of the S.C.T.A. to work on a friendly cordial basis with law enforcement agencies towards safety and closer observance of the traffic laws.
The exhibits by manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers are significant of the confidence and faith this segment of the automotive business reposes in this exposition as a show case of the activities and accomplishments of the
Association.
The motorcycle display which is one of the principal features of the exposition is an added attraction this year. Sparing no effort to present an attractive exhibit, the motorcycle industry and leaders of the sport of ~otorcycling are desirous that you spectators acquaint yourselves with this growing diversion.
Foreign car~ and speed boats also invite your attention in the array of ex·
hibits.
It is the sincere hope of the sponsors and the show management that when you leave this auditorium you will have a little better appreciation of the activities of the S.C.T.A., their aims and purposes . It is also the desire of the Association members that you will tell your friends and neighbors about this show and ask them to attend. We will endeavor to make their visit a pleasant
and profitable one.

THE friendly relationship that exis ts between the Southern California Tim
ing Association and law enforcement agencies, generally, is considered one of the major factors in the acciden t reduction rate in this area.
The desire to co-operate with the California Highway Patrol, the various police departments and sheriffs' offices
. in Southern California in an effort to
eliminate reckless driving, "drag" races, speeding on streets and highways, etc. has begun to pay dividends.
Whereas an occasional " screwball" may get a little lead-footed, the over-all record of the Association in strict observance of traffic regulations is one in which the S.C.T.A. t akes justifiable pride.

THE'' C(JP'' The old ommoded idea that a traffic
officer is per se an enemy or a baleful individual just waiting to spoil somebody's fun has long since gone by the board. In fact , during the past few years, a large number of Assciation members have become members of law enforcement agencies and there is a bond of understanding and camaraderie existing between them.
This spirit of co-operation is not native to any particular community in . this section. The club insignia on a roadster is usually sufficient evidence to any traffic officer that the driver is a member in good standing in the S.C. T.A. and therefore not likely to be a traffic law violator.
The very fact that the club members carry such insignia is an indication t hat the cars on which they appear are capable of high speeds but it is also a pretty fair indication that the driver will not attempt such speeds except in competition on the dry lake beds.
The enrollment pledge of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Na tional Safety Council was administered to the Southern California Timing Association by Judge Roger C. Pfaff and it is notable that not one of the pledged members has been hailed into court on a serious traffic infraction. This record is far better than the record of the average motorist whose car is not capable of such grea t speed.
T he Association welcomes the friendliness of law enforcement agencies and stands ready at all t imes to lend its assistance and co-operation in the campaign against death and accidents on the highways.

+-%* Pictured just prior to taking off on a r'ecord run through the El Mirage course is Nick Christos of the Dusters in his 1932 roadster equipped wifh a 1948 Mercury engine. In the background can be observed official timer Commodore Crocker together with recorder AI Lindsley as they prepa~e to compile statistics on Christos' run through the traps.
~ One of the features of Bob Rufi's car is the. enclosed cockpit. Because of close quarters in the compartment it is necessary to remove the ste:e,ring wheel before the driver is able to emerge after a run. An advanced feature in this car's make-up is the com, plete fire control system installed in the engine compartment. Another important safety development pioneered by the youthful members of the S.C.T.A.
-<~ In spite of its age, Bob Rufi's Chevrolet four rear engine streamliner constructed in 1939 maintains its place right up among the leaders in today's competition in S.C.T.A. time trials. Built in Rufi's home garage the car is of aircraft-type construction featuring thin sheet aluminum covering over a tubing frame. Rufi was S.C. T.A. champion in 1940 and still maintains a high standing in present day competition.
-<~ One of the S.C.T.A. time trials most familiar figures is the ever present chief timer, Commodore J. Otto Crocker, who with his electronic operated timer, clocks every car who runs the traps on a record run. Crocker, seated along with Jim Lindsey, recorder, who, incidentally is the originator of the three lane starting light system used at the El Mirage course, regulate the running of the event and their prt~cision-like efforts show in the smooth manner in which the events are always run off. Both are pioneer members of the S.C.T.A. and have contributed immeasurably to bring the sport to the high level of efficiency it now enjoys and have been instrumental in obtaining national recognition of the S.C.T.A. time trials conducted regularly. at the El Mirage Dry Lake cour~e near Victorville. ·

Huddled around la'st year's champion, Doug ·Hartelt of Fullerton, are a group of Lake's competitors to obtain helpful hints -on Doug's point-winning ways. Doug's Mercury "T" Class "B" roadster has b·een clocked at 140.180 m.p.h. and holds the S.C.T.A. Class "B" record with an average of better than 134 m.p.h. Doug is a member of the Lancers Club and his outstanding efforts have shown in the groups fine competitive standings.
Up from San Diego is Paul Schiefer at the wheel of his fast "C" Class entry which has been clocked at 148.02 m.p.h. Schi·efer is but one of the many San Diego enthusiasts who make regular journ'ey's to the S.C.T.A. time trials at El Mirage Dry Lake near Victorville. His car is a tubular frame Mercury "T" roadster and uses an Eidelbrok head and manifold, Harmon Cam, and Pounden ignition.
Combining efforts San Gabriel's Bill Burke and Alhambra's Don Francisco have designed and built the world's fastest Hot Rod, a rear engine Mercury bellytank which has been clocked at a sensational 153.32 m.p.h. Another interesting sidelight to t his record-breaking p.erformance is the fact that this is the fastest speed a Mercury motor has ever traveled at any time.

}N THE belief that nearly as many accidents are caused by faulty equip
ment as by careless driving, the Southern California Timing Association members make a fetish of operating cars that are mechanically sound.
To demonstrate the type of workmanship they put in their own cars and to display the meticulous attention to detail they observe in building their sleek roadsters, a group of Association members are constructing two cars here at the show. ,
In the pavilion, crews of mechanics under the direction of Lou Baney and Bill Burke, top craftsmen in their field, are rebuilding and renovating two old model roadsters from the frame up. If you observe the building progress from day to day or even weekend to weekend, you will note the special care that is devoted to the safety elements of the machines.
Witness the installation of the braking systems, observe the precise check of the frames, the axles, the steering mechanism, the transmission and the differential. Watch the careful testing of the instrument panels before they are ins tailed.
No detail is too small to escape the consideration of these mechanics if it deals directly with the operation or safety of the machine.
The chief purpose of this demonstration is not to allow these S.C.T.A.
members an opportunity to display their ability, but rather is an educational
feature aimed at instructing youthful ca~: owners, e>r prospective builders in the m:,1nner that experts employ when they undertake such a job.
A poorly built or carelessly put together roadster would not be allowed to participate in the time trials conducted by the Association and it is doubtful that the application of the owner of such a car for membership would be given serious consideration.
The marked decrease in hot rod accidents in Los Angeles during the past year may be credited in part to the car building demonstration given by Association members at their first exposition last January. The intense interest evidenced in this feature by young drivers satisfied the construction crew that their work was obtaining the desired results.
The two cars being built at this year's exposition represent a very substantial monetary sum. These cars are to be awarded as door prizes on the final night of the show. It is the sincere wish of the builders that whoever is fortunate enough to win either of these machines will observe the same care and caution in their operation that the S.C.T.A. crew observed in their construction.
WE SELL THE WINNERS!! It has been our pleasure to sell the record breaking Standard Models of
VINCENT H. R. D. MACHINES "The World's Fastest Standard Motorcycle''

PREK1 THE newly elected pre.Sident of the
Southern California T iming Association, Inc. is George Prussel of Pasadena, Calif, a very modest young fellow who was a bit backward about permitting his photo to be used. However, you'll be able to find George without much difficulty because he's probably just
about the busiest chap on this Exposition floor. George is a veteran of World War II having ser>ed four years in the air corps. He has been a member of the S.C. T.A. since 19 3 8 and one of his first cars gloried in the ra ther odd mon
iker of a Winfield Flat Head. Resuming participation in Timing Association activities at the close of the war, George was named assistant starter in 1947 and his faculty for leadership and sound decision finally brought about his election to the presidency this year. George is married and attends U.S.C. where he is majoring in commerce. Mr. Prussel is typical of the excellent leadership the S.C.T.A. has had since its incorporation.
