Eclipses and Tides Vocabulary
Eclipses
• solar eclipse
• lunar eclipse
• total eclipse
• umbra
• corona
• partial eclipse
• penumbra
Tides
• gravity
• daily cycle of high
and low tides
• spring tides
(extremes)
• neap tides
The changing
positions of the
earth, sun and
moon:
- cause the
daily tide cycle,
and
- sometimes
creates
eclipses.
Tides depend on the alignment of the
Earth, Sun and Moon, too!
But first, what are tides?
Tides happen in a daily cycle related to Earth’s
rotation and the Moon’s gravity field.
Spring Tide – extremes twice
each month when moon sun
and Earth are aligned in a
row (on either side)
Neap tide – reduced tide
range when moon and sun are
positioned at 90o
