Chapter # 5389
The RodeHOG Issue #168
October 2012
Director’s Message -
Alan Steiner
Over the past several months the Board institut-
ed some very subtle changes during our Chapter
meetings. Did you happen to notice? For start-
ers, many of the Board members stopped wear-
ing vests in an effort to be less subtle about patches, pins and rockers. Why? Well, the goal was to let all
our new members and riders feel more like they can be a part of this membership without the need to
"dress up", compete or match those of us that have been riding and collecting for some time.
Another thing we've tried to add to the meetings is something fun to look forward to. Some of what you experienced included a
spring fashion show, meeting paramedics from Medic One, having your tires checked out at a tire pump station and motorcycle
care tips & tricks. We'll continue to add more in the future however if there is something you'd like to see, let someone on the
Board know!
The Board has also tried to shorten up the meetings so you can spend more time socializing and riding as we can always have
something fun on the agenda. We've tried to keep business to a minimum by just delivering the key messages the Board felt were
important to you and not spend a lot of time talking about irrelevant topics.
Last meeting Mike Taylor talked about a Q&A box. I hope you'll take the opportunity to write down your questions and drop us
a line. The questions can refer to anything you can think of regarding our membership, the Board, dealership, H.O.G. or Harley-
Davidson. Our promise to you is that every question will get answered at the following Chapter meeting.
I would love to get your feedback on these changes. Use our new Q&A box if
you'd like or drop any of us on the Board a line in email. We are always looking
at ways to make our meet-
ings more fun and
enjoyable for everyone. You
can help us with that by let-
ting us know your thoughts.

Director,

Ladies of Harley
Sheri Avey
On September 21-23, 2012 our
LOH group participated in the
4th annual LOH Summit in Bel-
lingham, Washington. This event was hosted by the LOH
group out of the Mt. Baker Chapter. There were over 60
women present from all over the state of Washington.
We had a fun weekend of learning, meeting new friends,
spending time with old friends, sharing new ideas with each
other, shopping, wine tasting, and of course some great rid-
ing. The weekend ended with a ride to the Oyster Run in
Anacortes. We were all very thankful
that the weather was nice.
This next year, 2013, our chapter is
once again hosting the 5th annual LOH
Summit. As the founders of the summit
we look forward to taking it to the next
level. Look for more information to come as we begin to
plan this great event!
In closing I would like to thank Carolyn Roff and Judy Mills
for their many years of service in providing birthday
cards for the LOH ladies and general cards for the
membership. You ladies
ROCK! Thank You!
Respectively Yours,
Sheri A.
LOH Officer
Activities Officer - Wayne Kanaby
It’s about to become a very busy time with Thanksgiving,
Christmas, Hanukkah, Santa Lucia Day, Las Posadas, and
Kwanzaa.
While the weather isn’t very conducive to riding and having
fun, take a look at your Harley wish list. You know: chrome
accessories, LED lamps, heated gear, leather coats, vests and
chaps, a new stage-1set-up, and a million other functional
and ornamental doodads for your beloved bike, or maybe a
whole new motorcycle?!
If you find yourself dreaming of nice weather during this
time of wet, dreary, dark, dank, drizzly cold, grey days, think
about drafting plans for new rides and fun things to do with
your fellow ESHOG’s in 2013.
Early next year, I’ll schedule a ride and activities meeting. It
will be a different day than our Chapter meeting.
So put on your thinking caps or the cone of silence, and
close your eyes; see all the beautiful places and re-live the
fun times we had this past year. While fresh in your mind
and with a smile on your face, write down what and where
you most enjoyed riding…save it for our meeting and get
ready to “Rock & Roll” baby!!
The people, the rides,
the fun times togeth-
er…let’s do it again!!!

Safety Officer
Bill Larson
$50 Reimburse-
ment!
According to the National
H.O.G. one of my duties as
your chapter Safety Officer is
to educate the membership
about the Safe Rider Skills Pro-
gram. I wasn’t really aware of
this responsibility until I started to put together my officer
reference binder. Now that I know, prepare to be educated!
Harley-Davidson has a plan called the Safe Rider Skills Pro-
gram which is the perfect way for you to brush up your rid-
ing skills, and earn up to $50 reimbursement in the form of
a H.O. G. coupon to members who successfully complete a
Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) rider training course.
This included the Riders Edge courses sponsored by many
Harley-Davidson dealers, including Eastside. This is H.O.
G.’s way of reinforcing the idea that safe riding is important.
This year there were several opportunities to participate in
the MSF Advances Riders Course, and they should be availa-
ble again in 2013. My wife took the course on a blustery
Saturday early this summer and said it was the best thing
she’d done to increase her confidence and competence. I
immediately noticed that she was enjoying riding more due
to her increased skill set. She enjoys riding even more, and I
enjoy riding with her more because I know that her skills
are even better than they were before the course.
If we get a minimum of 12 chapter members to participate
in one of these courses the chapter will be recognized with
a special plaque, and you can
receive a $50 reimbursement
from H.O.G., not to mention
that you will also
be a safer rider.
Next year let’s see
how many mem-
bers we can get to
participate in the
Safe Rider Skills
Program!

Blast from the Past!
In September 2011 some
of us took a Tieton River
rafting trip. It was a wet
weekend but there were
a few members who
rode...and a few of us
stayed toasty in Wayne’s
car.

Jay’s Photo Corner
As the riding season winds down,
now is a great time to get your
photos in order. With the holidays
coming, think of the great cards
you can make with your pictures.
Here are some ideas on getting
started.
There are many free and pay image
editing and organizing software
packages for your computer. For under $100 you can get
Photoshop Elements 10 (Costco!), which runs on a Mac or
PC, and comes with a basic organizer, plus a great editing
package. I use Elements when I’m trying to resize a whole
lot of photos, and add watermarks (a bit of text in the cor-
ner).
You can get Live Gallery for free on the Microsoft website.
Live is another editing package that has an organizer. You
can download it from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/
windows-live/photo-gallery-get-started. Gallery is part of the
“Windows essentials” package, so there are other things
you might want to use. When you install, click “Choose the
programs you want to install” and get just what you want.
For the Mac, I’m afraid I don’t know much about them, but
here’s a place where you can get free editors, http://
graphicssoft.about.com/od/pixelbased/tp/freephotoedm.htm .
I’ve used Gimp before, which is the first on the list, and it is
powerful.
One of the best ways to organize your ride shots is to put
them on a website. This lets you share them with others, as
well as have them to show off pretty much anywhere. There
are three that I’m familiar with: Picasa (http://
picasa.google.com/), Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/), and
SmugMug (http://www.smugmug.com/). All three offer free
and paid versions. The free versions limit you in size and
sometimes throughput. If you upload only smaller photos,
these sites will go a long way. If you find you need more,
their plans are reasonable. On caveat, Picasa combines more
space with their full blown mail package, so you don’t get as
much space as it seems.
Take some time this winter to
get to know some of these
online services. You can also
save albums to Facebook,
though it sometimes limits how
you can share.
So-until next time, ride safe,
stay warm, and take lots of pictures! -Jay

I’d like to thank our esteemed HOG Chapter Secretary,
Sherée Collins, for standing in for me at the September
meeting. Traveling (Italy, Austria and Germany) was fun, but
it sure is nice to get home! We were “in a cage” from
Rome all the way to Frankfurt but saw very few “real” mo-
torcycles. What we did see were a lot of smaller “Vespa-
like” scooters.
Today at our meeting, you’ll be voting for our Primary Offic-
ers for the next two-year term. Our new Director will
need your support to continue running our HOG Chapter
smoothly. If you’re interested in volunteering for the Mem-
bership Officer position for the next two years, I’d be glad
to sit down with you and discuss … it is challenging, but the
rewards are great! Our new Director will be busy as well
reviewing the job duties with volunteers – get involved!
I hear that the name drawn for Jozef’s special drawing in
September was not present to win, so the dollars will be
added to the drawing for the October meeting – hope
you’re there and your name is called – it’s been growing for
three months! Sherée reported there were ~80 present in
September.
New members have swelled our ranks from 263 in Septem-
ber to 271 – WOW! Please look for these folks and give
them the good ole ES HOG welcome.

Editor’s Comments - Cathy Tracey
Thought I would add some humor to this edition so I went searching on google
for some real life funny road stories. Here are a couple taken from a general
motorcycling On-line Community. If you have a real-life humorous road story,
send it to me at editor@eshog.com!
When I lived in NC I strapped my duffel bag to my back seat and headed
on my 350 mile journey to Winston Salem, NC. I had a van following me
for a period of time and honking at me. Thought maybe he was flirting but
didn’t pay much attention to him. When I finally stopped in Raleigh for gas
I realized the side zipper where my underwear and bras were packed had
come unzipped. So somewhere on I 40 lies my bras and underwear. I am
sure it was a sight to behold. How embarrassing! Needless to say I bought
a new travel bag including undergarments.
I decided to head from Savannah, GA to Tampa FL to visit a buddy of mine
I hadn't seen in years. Just after I got on I-95 south, I noticed I had a 'riding
buddy'....a little fence lizzard was perched on my dashboard....I thought it
was amusing that he would be-bop around on the dash, hang out on the
speaker, and just acted like it was the most natural thing for him to be
doing......buzzing down the road at 70-ish. I guess he wanted some fresh
air, because he kept moving toward the edge of the windshield. A couple
times I put a hand up to make him back away from it because I knew that if
he stuck his nose out too far, he'd get sucked off the bike (which would
probably be a 'bad thing' for the little dude!). Unfortunately (for him), I was
busy watching the road, and didn’t get a chance to make him back up. One
second he was there, and the next; *POOF!*, he was gone! I think I felt
him grabbing at the right shoulder of my jacket as he passed by. If the poor
thing actually survived getting ripped off the bike like that, he was only
about 85 miles from home.
Ride and Have Fun! Cathy
