Ouachita Children’s Center Arts and Crafts
Many of you have asked about the monthly Arts and Crafts classes Alan and I lead at the
Ouachita Children’s Center (OCC). We have been doing this for over ten years and enjoy it as
much as the kids do. The kiddos range in age between seven to seventeen years old and we usu-
ally have between nine to fifteen youth in attendance each month, mostly adolescents. Roughly
half the children are at OCC due to neglect and abuse and the other half are there due to minor
infractions with the law.
In February we took photos of youth who wanted to
participate and they painted frames to mount their
photos. We also had wooden toys and paper mache
boxes to paint. Alan, Cheryl and I helped out with
the project while Terry played his guitar and sang
songs- great fun!
In March Alan, Shirley and I helped the youth deco-
rated glass vases with colored tissue paper and made tissue paper flowers to fill the vases.
These will all be placed in the dining room in anticipation of spring.
Working with the children at OCC is a blessing to both the
children and the adults who engage with them during Arts
and Crafts. We hope you will consider doing Arts and
Crafts with us in the coming months. You do not need to
be crafty, just a good listener and have a willingness to
open your heart to these children who need all the love
they can get. If we have more than five volunteers on a
given day, we may switch gears and make it a game day,
perhaps playing Apples to Apples or board games.
If you would like to participate in this very worthwhile
project, please contact me, Pati Trippel via email at
ptrippel@hotmail.com and I will add you to our monthly reminder list. The remaining dates for
2019 are April 13, May 18, June 1, July 20, August 17, September 14, October 26, November 16
and December 14. Thank-you for considering helping out at OCC!

Mountainside has made a strategic decision and commitment to support the Ouachita Children’s Center. The Ouachita Children Center has expanded the services provided to citizens in Hot Springs and surrounding counties. In addition to the shelter for children sent to OCC by the courts or by state agencies this organization is now providing (using grant monies) a “homeless youth drop-in center” for young people and a Domestic Violence Shelter for woman and children. There are hundreds of homeless youth in the greater Hot Springs community and the domestic violence shelter has taken in 8 woman and 7 children in a short 3 months.
The listed articles (below) represent items needed in both facilities. If you can donate the small items drop them at the church. For larger items call Alan Trippel (501.209.1277) for pickup arrangements.
Wall Cross Project
As we continue to update our foyer, we want to invite you to participate. In your travels and
wanderings, you are encouraged to share a wall cross that can be hung in a creative display.
When you contribute to this project we ask that you include your name, where
the cross is from and any special information you may have concerning the
cross.
These crosses will collectively bring enhanced meaning to our gathering
space...you may already have a special cross you would like to contribute, or
you can put it on your list for something to be on the lookout for on your next
trip. You may leave the cross and the information in the church office.
Arkansas Foodbank Thursday, April 11, 2019
The sign up sheet is on the Connecting Table. Please call Milt and Gail Wildrick
at 501-915-8940 if you want to meet at the church promptly at 8:15 a.m. Other-
wise, meet at The Arkansas Foodbank at 4301 West 65th Street in Little Rock at
9:00 a.m. (Arkansasfoodbank.org)
Project Giving Tree
Mountainside is making a difference in the community. This is a year-
long project so keep up the good work.
Enjoy the candy, and then fill those tubes with $14 dollars of quarters.
Easy right? The money collected will go to the Fountain Lake schools
to help kids who cannot keep up with their lunch money accounts.
When your tube is filled turn it in to the church office and grab an-
other to keep this project going. If you don’t collect change feel free to
write a check to the church specifying on the memo line that it is for
the school lunches. We want to make sure that no child goes hungry this year. This will be a
sweet project for Project Giving Tree!
Opportunities to Connect and Engage
Project Giving Tree
For the month of March and through Lent, Project Giving Tree will
be collecting gift cards from local fast food restaurants in Hot
Springs and the Village. These are used by Ouachita Children’s
Center as rewards for the kids so they may go out and purchase
their own food. Please make sure that these gift cards are small
amounts (Under $10). Let’s brighten up a child’s day by giving them a special treat which they
deserve.
