From 1922 to 1991, Russia was part of an even larger empire called the

A New Leader

By 1928,

____________________ became the head of the Soviet Union and he had the government take complete control of the economy.

Stalin ended private ownership of farms and businesses, and he aimed to industrialize the country.

Not a Good Guy

This new system was called a

________________________, and meant that factory managers were told what to make and how to make it, also, all money that was to be handed over to the government.

Anyone who opposed Stalin’s actions were killed or sent to prison camps deep in the forests of icy Siberia. Millions were murdered or forced into slavery by Stalin.

What is Communis

m? Under Communism, there is no class system. Meaning no upper,

middle, or lower classes.

Which essentially means that there are no rich people and no poor people.

What is Communis

m? In Communism, everyone in the country gets paid the same amount of money.

That means that factory workers are paid the same as doctors or lawyers.

While this sounds like a good idea in theory, there are many problems that arise.

Communism

ContinuedThe government owns everything within the country, therefore, they get to decide how much money everyone receives.

People are required to give over all of the money they make over to the government and then it is split up.

The Cold War

The U.S. and Soviet Union were the two strongest countries in the world and they did not get along. The U.S. and Soviet Union were actually on the same side during World War II.They were enemies, but there was never really any actual fighting, thus called the COLD War.They competed against one another to see who could do things better, stronger, and faster.

The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October of 1962.

The U.S. did not like that Cuba was communist and they tried to get communism out of Cuba.

Cuba turned to the Soviet Union for help and they got it.

It was the closest the Cold War ever came to there being actual fighting.

End of Communism

By the mid-70’s, communism was causing problems and people were growing tired of it.

In 1985 new Soviet leader

_____________________ tried to rebuild the economy, however, the Soviet Union began to break apart.

Ronald Reagan’s Speech to The Soviet Union

End of an EraBy 1991, all 15 of the republics that made up the Soviet Union had thrown off Communist rule in favor of

_____________________.By the end of that year, each of the 15 republics that made up the Soviet Union declared independence, and at this point the Soviet Union no longer existed.Russia emerged as the largest and most powerful of those republics.

A New Beginning

Since the fall of the Union, a
