Peak oil, climate change and waste – the context for everyone

• Peak oil

• Climate change

• Throw-away society

• Rethinking economics

Scenarios for the future

• Techno Explosion – where new forms of technology not only replace oil but set us free from other constraints, such as living on just one planet.

• Techno Stability is where something/s replace fossil fuel, and we move to a new stability without any terrible upheaval.

• Energy Descent is where nothing can replace oil and we manage the decline in energy use in a more or less peaceable way.

• Collapse – ‘Mad Max’. Not good.

We can’t plan the first two – they depend on ‘them’ ‘doing something’ – and the last is the absence of a plan.

Scenarios we can plan for

• Brown Tech

• Green Tech

• Earth Stewardship

• Lifeboats

(from David Holmgren Future Scenarios)

Designing a more resilient future – a process from Permaculture

• Basic principles of Permaculture

• Concept of no waste

• Permaculture design process – start from needs & goals and understanding what you have, before getting into design itself

Designing a more resilient future – a process from Permaculture

• Survey

• Analyse

• Design

• Implement

• Maintain

• Evaluate

• Tweak

Survey: the geography, history and economy of Leamington

• Geography – geology, climate, land

• Brief history from village to town to 21st c

• Economy – tourism, market, car industry, games software

Learning from history

• Oral histories

• World War II

• 1800

• Renewable resources: wood, wind, water, solar power

• Human and animal power

• Vision of true democracy

• Issue of land ownership

• Rainfall predictions for Leamington

• Water conservation/ low water usage

• Rainwater capture

• Renewable and low energy water treatment

• Making use of urine and manure

• Reuse of waste water – low energy waste water treatment

Homes

• Insulation, as above – reduce energy needed for heating

• Renewable heating resources – burning wood & side products of food production

• Low energy building materials – making use of local materials

Box in Homes

• Labour saving devices in the home

– no return to hand washing?

Transport

• Moving people – shortening the distances we travel

• Moving goods – local where possible

• ‘Right side of the line’ for longer distance freight

– Large container ships between countries – but

Leamington not on coast so dependent on other

means as well

Health

• Oil and pharmaceuticals

• Public health – remembering what we’ve learned (eg clean water, aseptic surgery)

• Low energy drugs – from nature

• The problem of antibiotics

Economy

• Supply chain and maintenance – keeping going the goods we have

• ‘Traditional skills’

• Labour of hand and mind – return to Clause 4!
