EEB/UCONN WEB SITES

• Hydrodictyon - a Dell computer in Paul’s office running CentOS (Linux) - currently hosts EEBedia and a couple of faculty web sites (it formerly hosted the entire EEB web site) - also hosts some project sites (e.g. Cicada Central)

• EEBedia: - primarily course web sites (e.g. this course!) and some personal sites - seminar speaker signup - uses same Wikimedia software that powers Wikipedia

• Aurora server - WordPress sites for departments, faculty, and grad. students - The EEB web site (except for EEBedia) is an Aurora site

EEBEDIA

• Run by the same software (MediaWiki) that runs Wikipedia

• Pro: no knowledge of HTML, PHP, Javascript, etc., needed. At the very least, you will use EEBedia to sign up to talk to seminar speakers.

• Cons: your web site is not portable (i.e. when you become a postdoc or faculty member, your web site will still be associated with UConn, not your new host institution)

AURORA

• WordPress sites maintained by UConn

• Pros: reasonably easy to create content (do not need to know HTML, but it helps)

• Cons: your web site is not portable (you could transfer your content fairly easily to a new WordPress host, however)

• Workshops are offered by UITS regularly and cover the basics

• Be sure to discuss here: - EEB web site photos, research interests, office location, etc.

WEEBLY

• Allows you to create a free website with an easy-to-use drag/drop editor

• Pros: (1) very easy to create content and (2) portable (i. e. not tied to UConn)

• Cons: your web site name will have “weebly" in the URL unless you pay a fee to lease a domain name

• These sites make it really easy to do basic things, but can also be used to do more sophisticated things (e.g. javascript)

• Other providers such as Squarespace, Google Sites, etc., are similar
