QUESTION

•Describe the efforts that have been undertaken by the Ministry of Education to bridge the inequality gap in education among students.

INTRODUCTION

•Overall, the Ministry of Education has been working to bridge the gap of inequality of educational opportunity among students.

KIA2M

• In 2008, 54,000 Year One pupils identified with low literary skills were enrolled in the Early Intervention Reading and Writing Class (KIA2M) – Kemahiran Intervensi Asas Membaca dan Menulis.

• KIA2M is early remedial programme to address the problems of reading and writing skills among students in Year 1.

• Conceptually, this program involves all of the schools, but national-type schools (SK) were given the choice of whether to engage in this program or not.

• All Year 1 students will take the KIA2M Screening Tests, students who failed the screening test will follow the KIA2M programme.

• KIA2M Teaching and Learning process conducted during the Bahasa Malaysia period.

• In addition, KIA2M also included within Visual Art Education, Music Education and Physical Education.

• Only trained teachers are involved in KIA2M.• Remedial teachers are encouraged to assist KIA2M

teachers especially in terms of P&P such as teaching techniques and material supply.

LINUS

• LINUS is an acronym for Literacy and Numeracy Screening (Program Saringan Literasi dan Numerasi)

• LINUS is a remedial programme designed to ensure students acquire basic literacy (Bahasa Malaysia) and and numeracy skills at the end of 6 years of primary education.

• LINUS is targeted at students who have difficulties in 3Rs i.e. Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic.
