My Lifein balance.
As a mother and a wife, time is in short supply. But I want my family to be active and healthy. So when I looked for a sports club, I chose Laguna Creek Racquet Club.
The club has something for all of us. It’s more of a club than a gym; conveniently located close to our home, work and the kids’ school. And, best of all, they care about us and we actually love going there.
My life will probably always be a steady stream of daily activities, but thanks to Laguna Creek Racquet Club, I now have it all in balance.

1. Sugar is the Prime Cause of Cavities. In real i ty, natural ly occurring bacteria in your mouth feed on carbohydrates to produce acid byproducts. This acid etches away at the enamel and eventually may produce a cavity.
2. If I don’t eat sugary foods I won’tget cavities.
Several factors contribute to cavities such as low saliva production, sleeping with the mouth open or systemic diseases. Besides, sugar is just one type of carbohydrate.
3. Aspirin Placed Next to a Tooth Will Help a Toothache.
Swallowing aspirin is what helps reduce toothache pain. Since aspirin is acidic, placing it beside the tooth can actually burn your gum tissue.
4. If You Have a Cavity, You’ll Know It.
Mild tooth decay usually doesn’t cause symptoms. The pain we have when we have a cavity comes when tooth decay is more advanced and may cause damage to the nerve. Allowing tooth decay to advance to that point can lead to more costly, time consuming procedures.
5. Cavities Are More Likely Between Teeth.
Anywhere bacteria can hide that you are unable to reach with a toothbrush or fl oss is a likely place for decay. If you have a small gap between your teeth and can’t clean it, you’re more likely to develop tooth decay there. Additionally, any chip or crack in the tooth can lead to canals which bypass the strong enamel and reach the soft dentin more susceptible to decay.
6. You Don’t Need to Worry About Cavities in Baby Teeth.
Baby teeth hold the space for permanent teeth. If these cavities are untreated, they can lead to serious pain or tooth loss. Occasionally an infection can form. The best way to take care of your baby’s teeth is to simply wipe them with a wet cloth once a day. Once your baby starts getting several teeth, it is a good idea to switch to a children’s toothbrush and toothpaste.

Be Prepared at HOME…
Meet with your family and discuss why you need to prepare for disaster. Explain the dangers of fire, severe weather and earth-quakes to children. Develop and practice a family communications plan that includes an evacuation plan with at least two fam-ily meeting places- one nearby for sudden emergencies like fire, and one outside your neighborhood in cases like earthquakes or flooding.
Build a disaster supply kit that includes enough supplies for each family member for three days. Remember to check your kit every six months.
Help Prepare your COMMUNITY…
Working with neighbors can save lives and property. Meet with your neighbors to plan how the neigh-borhood could plan for a disaster. If you’re a member of a neighborhood organization, such as a home association or crime watch group, introduce disaster preparedness as a new activity.
During the STORM…
Avoid areas that are subject to sudden flooding. Do not try to drive over a flood-ed road. This may cause you to be both stranded and trapped. If your car stalls, abandon it IMMEDIATELY and seek high-er ground. Use the telephone ONLY for emergency needs or to report dangerous conditions. Tune to local radio or television
stations for emergency information and instructions from local authorities. Estab-lish an out-of- state family contact so that friends and relatives will know who to call to get information about where you are.
Stay Safe and Warm this Winter...
Heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths. Almost half of home heating equipment fires are reported dur-ing the months of December, January, and February. Some simple steps can prevent most heating-related fires from happen-
ing. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from
heating equipment, such as the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable heater. Only use heating equipment that has the label of a recog-
nized testing laboratory.
Have a qualified professional install space heating equip-
ment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to
the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions. Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected annually. Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
Make sure the fireplace has a screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room and burn only dry, seasoned wood.
Install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. Test smoke alarms and CO alarms at least monthly.
Follow these useful tips to keep your family and community safe this winter.
Weather the Storm…Disaster Preparedness starts with YOU!

Safety & Awareness
We often think about safety awareness and think this means being aware of our surroundings when we are out and about. But truly, safety awareness really begins at home. The Elk Grove Police Department would like to share some thoughts and safety tips on how to make your home less desirable for burglars.
First, remember to lock your doors, win-dows and set your alarms even if you are leaving for a short time. Most residential burglaries take only a matter of minutes, and could take place while you run out to pick up the kids from school. Many bur-glaries are committed by entering though unlocked doors and windows. The door from the garage into the house is considered an entry door and should always be locked. All doors and windows should have some type of secondary lock on it that is a backup should the fi rst line of defense fail. Another recommendation is to replace the screws in the latch plate of all exterior door frames with 3 inch screws. This reinforces the latch plate and secures it to the framework of the structure making it harder to kick in.
Criminals do not like to be seen and light-ing is a very inexpensive tool that can make you feel safer and deter criminals from choosing your home. The Elk Grove Police Department encourages residents to use timers on their lights when they are going to be gone for an extended period of time or on vacation. The timers will give the appearance that someone is home to any passersby. In addition to interior lighting, installing exterior motion lights in the front,
rear and side of your home will alert the intruder and assist in detouring them from your home.
Landscaping can also be used as a deter-rent. Keep shrubs cut back to avoid cre-ating hiding places. Also, by keeping tree canopies cut high, this creates a natural surveillance system. Plants can also be used to provide some security if they have thorns or are unpleasant to be in. Roses, cactus, citrus and even some fl owering vines can be used as defensive plantings. Well maintained yards give the impression
that residents take the time to pay attention to detail and are around. Overgrown yards tend to give the impression that the homeowner is
too busy or not around.
Getting to know your neighbors and keeping
your eyes and ears open to suspicious activity is important in helping to keep your neigh-borhood safe. Get involved in a Neighborhood Watch
group.
Alarm systems are a valuable tool. If you have one, get in the habit of using it all the time. Don’t answer the door to people you do not know. However, do let them know someone is home by speaking to them from behind a closed door or security door. Many times criminals pose as solicitors and when no one answers the door, they go around to the rear of the residence to break in. If you answer the door, they will usually look for a different target.
If you park in the driveway, park under a light and remove all items from your car in-cluding your garage door opener.
For more safety tips you can contact the Elk Grove Police Department or visit the website: www.elkgrovepd.org.

I have lived and worked in Elk Grove for over 35 years and just want to give all of you interested in the Elk Grove community a little hometown perspective of Elk Grove through the years. In 1972, when my family moved to the Elk Grove area, there were no stop lights in town, no fast food restaurants, a population of less than 11,000, 1 high school - Elk Grove High School and 2 junior highs - Joseph Kerr and James Rudder. When my family moved to this “farm” community on the “outskirts” of Sacramento during my Junior year of high school - I thought I had moved to Kansas or something. Sorry to all of you who love Kansas.
Elk Grove was established in 1850 as a stop for the stage. It became a crossroads and hub for local commerce and played a part in the early gold rush being just 15 miles south of the historic Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento.
Elk Grove House was built in 1850, by the founder of Elk Grove, James Hall. Built on the historic Monterey Trail, Elk Grove House was reputed to be one of the fi nest stage stops between Sacramento and Stockton. The building stood for 107 years until it was torn down for a Highway 99 expansion project Above is a photo of the Elk Grove House as it was rebuilt in 2002 and currently stands in Elk Grove Heritage Park. Although Elk Grove has grown rapidly over the last decade, Elk Grove has always celebrated it’s rich history. The revitalization of Old Town Elk Grove was completed in November of 2005 and the Elk Grove Historic District comprises 48
buildings of historic signifi cance.Although Elk Grove is in close proximity to Sacramento, until the 1980’s it remained independent of Sacramento’s growth. As Sacramento grew, communities started pusing out towards Elk Grove and new communities started popping up in Elk Grove in the early 1980’s. In July 2000, Elk Grove became a city within the County of Sacramento. Although once thought of as a sleepy little town on the “outskirts” of the Capitol of California, Elk Grove was named as one of the fastest growing cities in 2004 & 2005. The State of California estimated the city’s population at 136,318 as of January 1, 2007.
When I graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1975 , it seemed to me that Elk Grove High School was “old” .. In 2008, my youngest daughter, Rachel, will be graduating from Elk Grove High School, so you know the kids think it’s old now, 33 years later. However, it is a great feeling as a parent to still go to “Back To School Nights” and see old friends from our high school days. The funny thing is that there are still a couple of teachers left from when my husband and I attended Elk Grove High School and there are many current teachers that were former students.
Elk Grove may be the fastest growing city, but it still has that small city charm and its a great place to raise a family.

At Peak Performance our philosophy is that we should all live like we plan to make it to 100 years old! Now a lot of
people will tell me that they don’t want to live to be that old but I always answer back with one question; “But what if you do?” The simple truth is drugs don’t heal anything. They simply cover up symptoms. They are toxic and have ‘side’ effects. The effects that we consider harmful are labeled side effects to make it sound better when it happens to you.
At Peak Performance we offer family chiropractic corrective care. Massage, health classes, a full gym with personal trainers, computerized traction programs for herniated discs, detox programs and nutritionals and free classes. Call and ask about our next Healing Diet Class!

RON OHTA
Tofu House8839 Sheldon Rd
Don’t let the name fool you. Tofu House isn’t only about tofu! It is Elk Grove’s newest Korean restaurant. This cozy spot was home to two other short-lived cafés. We hope the Tofu House is here to stay. The menu consists of about a half dozen tofu soups called Soon. There are also several mainstream Korean dishes such as Kalbi (beef short ribs) and Bulgogi (barbeque meat). Just my luck, these are two of my favorites, and, wanting to try the soups, we ordered the combination plates. We began with servings of several side dishes that included a chestnut gelatin, radish kimchee, cabbage kimchee, fi sh cake balls, potatoes, and marinated bean spouts. We ordered the seafood and mushroom soups
and requested “medium”. They were just spicy enough, and defi nitely hot, as they were literally boiling in the individual hot pots in which they were served. The Kalbi was exceptionally fl avorful and meaty, with not a lot of fat that is typical of beef short ribs. Of the Bulgogi choices of meat, we chose the pork. The spicy sweet fl avor still makes my mouth water today. The portions were very generous, and rice is served in a small bowl. We were treated to extra helpings of side dishes, but the amount of food was already generous and we left very stuffed!
